Algonquin College students have mixed feelings about possible teacher strike
Algonquin College nursing student Mia Menard says she is “totally supportive” of her professors who are threatening to strike on Monday.
“But at the same time, I’m really nervous about my own schooling, and what’s going to happen,” said the 23-year-old in an interview Friday. Her reaction was typical among a smattering of students interviewed on campus as the clock ticks toward a Monday morning strike deadline set by the faculty union.

Fury FC hoping to end frustrating season on winning note
It took 11 agonizing results spread over eight often frustrating weeks, but Julian de Guzman finally has a game ball.
Ottawa Fury FC’s interim head coach has it safely stored in his office at TD Place stadium. Now all he needs are signatures from all the players who made it a keepsake.
Since recording his first victory as head coach, last Sunday’s wildly impressive 4-0 triumph against Cincinnati FC, de Guzman has received congratulatory texts from the man he replaced back back in mid -
Charges against two Ottawa criminal lawyers resolved
Criminal charges separately laid against two Ottawa defence lawyers have been resolved with a conditional discharge and a peace bond.
Criminal defence lawyer Natasha Calvinho was charged in 2016 with dangerous driving after what police alleged was a November 2015 hit-and-run that left another driver with minor injuries. In August of this year, Calvinho was given a conditional discharge and 12 months probation.
Calvinho was previously charged with impaired driving and failing or refusing to give -
All charges dropped against Winchester man, ending epic legal saga
The Crown has dropped all criminal charges laid against a Winchester man in the course of a cold case investigation into unsolved homicides in Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry.
Crown attorney Jason Pilon announced earlier this week in a Morrisburg court that the case against James Henry “Jimmy” Wise has been withdrawn.
He did not give any reasons for the decision and did not return calls from the Citizen.
Wise, 73, was charged with 10 criminal counts following an Onta -
Scoffield: Politics matters – cars, Carr and Quebec
Any hope the Liberals had of a quiet Thanksgiving break melted away quickly this week, even with MPs back in their ridings and the party leaders politicking in distant places.
The hullabaloo over the government’s tax proposals degenerated into a head-scratcher, with the governing party having to revise, re-explain and eventually retract an obscure tax change on retail employees’ benefits that suddenly grabbed the public’s interest.
While it’s still unclear whether slivers -

City fined after train blows through signal again
The City of Ottawa has been fined $42,708.06 because a Trillium Line train blew a signal last May — not the first time it has happened.
Transportation general manager John Manconi told council in a memo on Friday that on May 3, a train was travelling at a low speed as it approached a passing track. It rolled through a red signal after a train travelling in the opposite direction had already passed, the memo said.
The train system’s automated protection system kicked in and broug -

Gatineau hospital temporarily cuts elective surgeries by 10 per cent
The Gatineau hospital is rescheduling 10 per cent of its elective surgeries over the next two months as it deals with a shortage of specialized nurses.

Police disciplinary charges against Ottawa officers stayed
Police disciplinary charges laid by the police watchdog against three Ottawa officers that were shrouded by secret proceedings were stayed last month, the Citizen has learned.
The charges — against an inspector and two constables for allegations made against them while they were in the drug squad — were laid by the Office of the Independent Review Director and came to a hearing which began in September 2016.

A Tribe Called Red pulls its music from Mìwàte
Ottawa-based group A Tribe Called Red has pulled its music from Mìwàte, the sound and light show at Chaudière Falls, because it does not want to be associated with anything that celebrates Canada’s 150th birthday.
Music from the three-member DJ crew made up two minutes of the 10-minute soundtrack for the production, which launched one week ago at the falls.
More than 13,000 people have already viewed the spectacle presented as part of Ottawa 2017, the city&r -

Dark matter: Carleton physicist gets $3.35M to help unravel mysteries of the universe
A Carleton University experimental physicist has been awarded $3.35 million to build a lab to help gain insight into the nature of neutrinos and dark matter. The elusive answers to those questions could lead to nothing less than a better understanding of how the universe was formed.
Neutrinos are much smaller than other known particles, and are very difficult to detect. The actually mass of the neutrino is not known. A measurement that would shed light on its mass and the origin of that ma -

Boucher decides to put Anderson in net against the Flames
CALGARY — Craig Anderson will stay in the net Friday night.
While it may have made more sense for Ottawa coach Guy Boucher to hold the club’s starting goalie until Saturday night’s game against the Edmonton Oilers in this back-to-back series in Alberta, the Senators will start Anderson against the Calgary Flames at the Saddledome.
Coming off a 3-2 shootout victory over the Vancouver Canucks Tuesday night, Boucher opted to stick with his starter. It will be Anderson’s four -

Transit and economic development are top Ottawa interests in Gatineau municipal election
Ottawa’s ties with Gatineau have grown stronger in recent years, which is why Mayor Jim Watson is curious to see how the municipal election will shake out on the other side of the Ottawa River.“I follow the mayor’s race because they are our next-door neighbours and it’s important that we have a good relationship, but I’ll let the voters decide. -

How Elizabeth Le Geyt connected us to nature
It was the summer of 2012. I had grown to love reading Elizabeth Le Geyt’s bird columns, and sometimes she inspired me to write down my “bird” experiences. I should say that I was not a “birder” as such, just a lonely long-distance runner who would frequently find himself in the company of our flying friends. In particular, another loner, the heron.
So it was that before dawn that Saturday in July, I revved up the engines in my legs for close to 30 kilometres up the -
LEGO Ninjago a brick-based brawler that younger gamers will love
Go Ninja go.
With it’s latest brick-based adventure, LEGO takes a small step forward to introduce some brawling basics that make this game, at times, one of the best LEGO adventures released to date.
However, repetitive play and some technical issues that cause glitching, coupled with a rather short storyline take away from what could have been LEGO’s best offering yet.
The game opens with a brief training session against the Master Chicken (an actual karate-fighting bird) who has ki -

Ottawa Writers Festival's 20th edition puts spotlight on Indigenous authors, progressive issues
Twenty years ago, when the very first Ottawa International Writers Festival was held at the National Arts Centre, Algonquin elder William Commanda welcomed eventgoers to unceded Algonquin territory.
“We did the right thing way back when,” says Sean Wilson, the festival’s artistic director. This year’s fall festival, which consists of 20 events from Oct. 19 to 24, will bring the event “full circle,” he adds, when it gives special prominence to Indigenous w -
Growing wild turkey population takes bite out of Ontario forests
Eastern North America’s wild turkey population is growing so fast that two Pennsylvania scientists say they are damaging parts of forests in their state, and Ontario could suffer as well.
Twenty years ago, there were no wild turkeys in Eastern Ontario and the Outaouais, but Ontario and Quebec released them as game for hunters. Today these big, tough, slightly comical birds are all around.

Gormley: What does North Korea really want? To survive
It is fair to assume that human civilization generally wishes to avoid obliteration by nuclear war. It should be admitted at the outset, however, that we cannot know all that the regime of North Korea wishes for itself. We know too little about how it thinks.
We know what it says in public, but this is often a lie and always an exaggeration. We know as well what it shows the public; this, though, is a nearly-three-quarters-of-a-century-long piece of performance art.

What are the consequences of an extinct corporate shell being found guilty, but minus charges against its executives and owner? None.
Many people in Lac-Mégantic bel -
Hillary Clinton still walks the tightrope faced by all women
My disappointment at Hillary Clinton’s recent performance in Toronto is my problem, not hers.
Like many women, I had a lot invested in her run for the U.S. presidency. I’d waited a lifetime and no woman had even gotten close – until last year. Since her days as First Lady, she’d shown herself to be smart, empathetic and committed to public service. S -
Seamus O’Regan – here is an example of how screwed up your Veterans Affairs department really is
It was interesting to watch the recent news conference in which Canadian Forces and Veterans Affairs Canada staff unveiled a joint suicide prevention strategy.
Veterans Affairs Minister Seamus O’Regan was eager and positive about his department and how it can help those with PTSD and other mental issues.
VAC Deputy Minister Walter Natynczyk took the microphone and gave an exuberant speech about how veterans, dealing with mental illness issues, should drop in to any VAC office to call the 1 -
Income property gives young couple a boost up the property ladder

Bélanger, 30, who works in finance for the federal government, says the couple had spent “a few years” looking at income properties before taking the leap to buy their Little Italy home, where they live in one unit and rent out two others.
“Our short-term goal was to purch
