Installing temporary seats for the Grey Cup football game at Lansdowne has meant taking out one of the site’s multimillion-dollar works of art in a way that might have ruined it, according to the artist who created it.
“In my honest estimation, I will be very surprised if it ever goes back, or can go back the way it was before,” said Jill Anholt, the Vancouver artist who made Moving Surfaces, the gigantic screen made of steel piles and electronic lights that crowned Lansdowne P

Australian fighter jets for Canada? The official process has begun
I have a new update at the National Post on the potential purchase by Canada of used Australian fighter jets.
Canada has taken the first official step to purchasing used F/A-18 aircraft from Australia as its dispute with Boeing continues unresolved.
You can read the article here:

Capital Voices: 'Your life is dictated by cows'
To mark Canada’s sesquicentennial, the Citizen’s Bruce Deachman met and photographed 150 people in the Ottawa area, encouraging them to tell their stories that, combined, painted an intimate portrait of the region and the people who live, work and play here. The series, which was published daily leading up to Canada Day, was called Capital Voices. It continues on a somewhat less rigorously defined schedule.

Egan: Pizza and a life of pie — Colonnade celebrates its 50th
In 50 years of serving the hungry soul, some days it’s pizza, some days a slice of life.
Kalil Dahdouh is in the office above the Colonnade Pizza Restaurant, which he solely took over on Nov. 4, 1967, or very nearly 50 years ago, and a place that may make the best pizza in town — a household brand, really — consuming $30,000 a month in cheese alone.
At age 83 — in remarkably good shape — he’s reminiscing about arriving in Ottawa in January 1959, a young man fr -
Escaping the prison of obsessive compulsive disorder
Jenn Coward was 15 when the obsessions started.
After a neighbour’s house had been broken into, she became consumed by thoughts that she and her family were in danger, too. And so began a series of rituals that eventually would take over her life: checking that doors were locked, that windows were closed, searching any potential hiding spots for a burglar who meant harm.
Coward had no idea she was in the powerful grip of obsessive compulsive disorder.
“I didn’t really know what -
With Stofa, former Atelier chef de cuisine Jason Sawision steps out on his own
Jason Sawision chose an old Norse word meaning “hearth” when he named his new Wellington West restaurant.
The name Stofa, he says, symbolizes a comfortable area where people gather. “And we wanted to make the restaurant feel like that.”
Stofa, at 1356 Wellington St. W. — the site of a former African restaurant — opened its doors last week after much anticipation.
The 35-year-old chef-owner of Stofa honed his chops as chef de cuisine at one of the city’s -
Boucher not sure what full lineup will look like Tuesday night, but Chabot will play
VANCOUVER — It appears the Ottawa Senators aren’t taking any chances with their blue line.
After losing Johnny Oduya and Ben Harpur in the first two games of the season, head coach Guy Boucher may dress 11 forwards and seven defencemen Tuesday night as they open this three-game Western Canada road swing at Rogers Arena against the Vancouver Canucks.
However, the 11-7 split may depend on the health of winger Mike Hoffman, who missed Monday’s skate with the flu but was on the ice -

Borutski 'would have stopped' deadly rampage, court hears
Basil Borutski said he “would have stopped” the September 2015 rampage that killed three women, appearing to blame the victims for their own deaths in a police interview the day after the killings.
Borutski is defending himself on charges of first-degree murder in the deaths of Carol Culleton, 66, Anastasia Kuzyk, 36, and Nathalie Warmerdam, 48.
The jury on Tuesday heard the remainder of a five-hour police interview in which Borutski admits to killing the women, but insists the actio -
The New Pornographers find harmony amid instability
The New Pornographers are a collective with a regular ebb and flow of band members. The multi-city band finds strength, and new ideas, through its ever-growing roster. (The latest touring member, singer and violinist Simi Stone, joined in 2015.)
It’s a strange thing, then, to picture longtime member Kathryn Calder holed up at home by herself, recording vocals away from band’s other members. As the New Pornographers scrambled to finish their latest record, Whiteout Conditions, she too -

Fear, loathing and resilience in times of bad news
It was raining bullets.
Something about that image has stuck with me throughout the last week, after the mass shooting in Las Vegas.
I wasn’t there. I wasn’t anywhere near the Jason Aldean concert, or the Mandalay Bay Casino hotel, or its 32nd floor.
But that image, of death pelting concertgoers like rain, has lingered in my thoughts, and through my days.
It’s an unwelcome new nightmare, one more haunting idea to throw upon the pile in what seem -
Spencer: Lessons in disaster from the failing Phoenix pay plan
The most chilling sentence in last week’s report on the Phoenix pay project is this bland, yet blunt, pronouncement: “These are lessons yet to be learned, not lessons that have been learned.” That’s from Goss Gilroy Inc. management consultants, whose examination painstakingly lays out 17 “lessons” – or, to put it simply, ways in which the federal government and senior public servants simply blew it.
They blew it by: not properly defining the scope of the -

Iraqi vice president warns of civil war with Kurds –time for Canadian special forces to be pulled out?
Is civil war looming in Iraq?
Iraqi Vice President Ayad Allawi seems to think that could be a possibility. In an interview with the Associated Press, he warned a “civil war” could erupt over the Kurdish-administered city of Kirkuk.
The city of Kirkuk falls outside the autonomous Kurdish region in the northeast Iraq. But the Kurdish referendum for independence from Iraq included the city.
Allawi is particularly worried about how militias in Iraq will react to the Kurds retaining Kirku -
Ottawa man, 52, missing since Saturday
Ottawa police are asking for the public’s help in locating a 52-year-old Ottawa man who went missing over the Thanksgiving long weekend.
Steve Holland was last seen Saturday wearing a green sweater, red ball cap and beige shorts in the Dunham Street area in the east end of the city, near Gloucester. His family is “greatly concerned for his safety,” said police on Tuesday.
Holland is described as a white man, 5-5, 170 pounds, with a stocky and muscular build, and short blo -
Cohen: Who left the Jews off the Holocaust plaque?
When it came to light that the introductory plaque in the new National Holocaust Monument did not mention Jews or anti-Semitism, the outcry and blame seemed wholly justified.
After all, hadn’t the Jews been overlooked in recent years in official statements of commemoration by governments in Ottawa and Washington? Didn’t this kind of omission reflect a trend of denial of Jewish suffering? Wasn’t this another example of “inclusiveness” in our multicultural land?

Leiper can't convince planning committee to stop Byron triplex additions
Kitchissippi Coun. Jeff Leiper couldn’t convince colleagues to send a “strong message” to the local development industry on Tuesday by rejecting an application to allow fourth units in two triplexes on Byron Avenue.
Leiper effectively wanted the planning committee to force Peloso Construction to fight at the Ontario Municipal Board if the company wants additional units in both 266 and 270 Byron Ave.
“Send it back,” Leiper told councillors.
Leiper suggested the -

Worries about blacklisting, lack of leadership, other concerns about government procurement
The federal government’s Procurement Ombudsman has tabled his 2016-2017 annual report. It contains some interesting details about concerns from both companies/suppliers dealing with the federal government, government program managers and procurement specialists.
The following are examples of what the office heard from suppliers and federal officials during outreach events in 2016–2017:

Bad news: Fear, loathing and resilience
It was raining bullets.
Something about that image has stuck with me throughout the last week, after the mass shooting in Las Vegas.
I wasn’t there. I wasn’t anywhere near the Jason Aldean concert, or the Mandalay Bay Casino hotel, or its 32nd floor.
But that image, of death pelting concertgoers like rain, has lingered in my thoughts, and through my days.
It’s an unwelcome new nightmare, one more haunting idea to throw upon the pile in what seem -

House Works: Mastering traditional stonework teaches three life lessons
Thirty years ago this past July I began building in a way I’d never seen anyone else do in real life. Without anyone available to teach me, the learning curve involved four years of struggle before the break-through stage when there was more joy than frustration. This was the beginning of my experience with traditional stonework, and the adventure has left me with something that’s proven valuable far beyond just the work with stone itself. Perhaps you’ll find something valuable -
