Erik Karlsson and the Ottawa Senators have been true to their word.

“I feel like I’m getting to where I want to go. N

Senators' Kyle Turris ignoring contract talk noise and trade rumours
Kyle Turris chose his words carefully Saturday.
Let’s face it, that had been enough of a storm brewing around the future of the Ottawa Senators’ top centre and his stalled contract talks in the previous 48 hours without him fanning the flames only two games into the National Hockey League regular season.
Meeting with reporters for the first time since TSN’s Darren Dreger said before the season opener Thursday night that he expected Turris to be traded before the Feb. 26 deadlin -
Another apartment fire claims another life in Gatineau
A 51-year-old man died Friday in the second fatal Gatineau apartment fire in as many days.
Five others were left homeless after the blaze at 183 Dorchester St. in Buckingham. Residents noticed smoke in the two-storey building shortly after 4 p.m.
Gatineau firefighters searched the building when they arrived and found an unconscious man inside. He was given first aid and taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Local Sixties Scoop survivors say $800M settlement doesn't go far enough
One woman had dreams about being whisked away from her home in a black car. Only after she grew up and met her biological family did she learn that dream actually happened and her sisters had chased after the car as it drove away.
Another woman only learned she was Indigenous when she was a teenager, living in an adoptive home filled with abuse and violence.
Both are Ottawa-based survivors of the Sixties Scoop, in which Indigenous children were removed from their homes and placed in mostly white -

Karlsson, Oduya out for Senators Saturday, Harpur and Formenton in
Captain Erik Karlsson and Johnny Oduya will both be out of the Ottawa Senators blueline Saturday night against the Detroit Red Wings.
As a result, Ben Harpur has been recalled from the Belleville Senators of the American Hockey League to fill a hole on the beleaguered blue line.
“With Oduya missing and Erik missing, we need some NHL experience and Harpur has got that,” Senators coach Guy Boucher said when asked about why the organization didn’t recall top defence prospect Thoma -

Oz Kafe resides in an attractively renovated heritage building, accessed from an off-the-beaten path courtyard and labeled with low-key signage. Once you do find it, you’ll see that the eatery seats about 60 on each of its floors — about twice the capacity of its predecessor’s single floor. -

Here's what happens when there's an incident involving police
When death or serious injury involving the police occurs, a public outcry and a breakdown in trust often follow.
When police officers hurt or kill someone, the public, especially visible minorities and Indigenous people, feel vulnerable.
The police have their own perspective. How the story is reported also has a part to play in the way the general public perceives these incidents. For instance:

New Wellington West restaurant Bar Lupulus set to open with 20 draft beer taps and a Mediterranean-inspired menu
Here’s a groaner of a joke for beer lovers: How are the renovations going at the about-to-open Bar Lupulus? Well, they’re hopping to it.
If that gag is at all funny, it would be because humulus lupulus is the species name for hops, which are crucial for making beer, which is the beverage that will be lavishly celebrated at Lupulus. Opening Wednesday at 1242 Wellington St. W., west of Holland Avenue where the Flying Banzini sandwich shop had been, the bar and restaurant will dive deep -

From funny to outrageous: Political cartoonist Terry 'Aislin' Mosher reflects on a life well drawn
Burned in effigy. Denounced for committing “a crime against fundamental Canadian values.” Named to the Order of Canada.
Those are some of the rewards Terry Mosher has reaped during 50 years of lampooning Canadian politics and culture.
The Ottawa-born cartoonist, known by the nom de plume Aislin, has spent most of his professional career at the Montreal Gazette, parsing, through his distinctive lens, such pivotal events as the FLQ Crisis, the Canada-Russia Summit Series and the electi -

Editorial: Ontario's jail reform is even bigger – this is an overhaul
Ontario is astonishingly out of step with modern standards – and common decency – when it comes to running jails. It’s past time this changed.
A report this week from Howard Sapers, the former federal corrections investigator who was appointed to do an independent review of our provincial jails, painstakingly details the ways in which Ontario’s penal policy falls flat, dehumanizing prisoners and their families and failing to adopt consistent, provincial regulati -
Capital Voices: He saved a friend's life … and got in trouble
To mark Canada’s sesquicentennial, the Citizen’s Bruce Deachman met and photographed 150 people in the Ottawa area, encouraging them to tell their stories that, combined, painted an intimate portrait of the region and the people who live, work and play here. The series, which was published daily leading up to Canada Day, was called Capital Voices. It continues on a somewhat less rigorously defined schedule.

Hard work helps Brassard hit the ground running without training camp
Who needs training camp?
That was the standing joke after Derick Brassard recorded just his second three-point game for the Ottawa Senators in Thursday’s season opener against the Washington Capitals. The 30-year old veteran skated with the team during camp, but, because of his mending shoulder, didn’t get cleared for contact until the day before the game.

Elizabeth Le Geyt (1914-2017): Citizen's 'bird lady' inspired generation of naturalists
When Elizabeth Le Geyt wrote her final column after 39 years in the Ottawa Citizen, she added a simple message of appreciation in the middle.
“Now it is my turn to say ‘thank you’ to all the birders who have supported me over the past 39 years and made the column possible,” Le Geyt wrote in her March 23, 2013 Birds column. “I shall miss opening all the reports and seeing the beautiful pictures that were made possible by the digital cameras and the great photographer -

Offering a conspiracy theory over the Kyle Turris contract negotiations
Ask yourself this:
Who benefits from a report that comes out on the day of the season opener that suggests the Ottawa Senators and the agent for Kyle Turris have hit a sudden and serious impasse in contract negotiations?
And who gains from the ensuing speculation by highly respected hockey insiders doing the reporting that, while it’s doubtful the team is prepared to sign the smooth centre to a seven- or eight-year deal, the likely move now is to trade him?
Why would the Senators create wa -
Game Day: Senators versus Red Wings
Red Wings at Senators

Five keys to the game
1: The Big Line: The Senators were in seventh heaven — seven points — from the line of Bobby Ryan, Derick Brassard and Mark Stone against Washington. Can they stay hot?
2: Cleaning up the mess: For two periods against Washington, the Senators limited giveaways. When they started coughing up the puck in the third, Alex Ovechkin made them pay.

Chris Wideman makes instant mark on opening night for Senators
Shoot first, ask questions later.
As an organizational philosophy, that approach seems to work well for the Ottawa Senators.
When Chris Wideman scored on the Senators’ first shot on goal of the National Hockey League season against Washington Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby on Thursday night — 6:25 into the first period — it wasn’t as rare as you might think.
In 2015-16, Kyle Turris also opened the season by scoring on the Senators first shot against Buffalo Sabres goal -
QB Trevor Harris not 100 per cent, but he's ready to lead the Redblacks
VANCOUVER — Trevor Harris admits his separated shoulder isn’t fully healed yet.
However, after missing three games, Harris says he’s ready to resume his duties as Ottawa Redblacks starting quarterback Saturday against the B.C. Lions.
“I feel good enough,” he said Friday at BC Place stadium. “It’s not going to be 100 per cent, anybody who’s dealt with shoulders knows that. It’s not hindering the way I’m throwing. It’s not hindering -
Good hasn't been good enough for either Redblacks or Lions
VANCOUVER — When asked about his team’s performance, when asked if both the Ottawa Redblacks and B.C. Lions were good teams that weren’t always rewarded with results, B.C. coach Wally Buono pulled no punches. He didn’t dance around the question with “could-haves, should-haves” and “what-ifs.”
“Why would you say both teams are better than their records when their records are what they are,” Buono said Friday at B.C. Place, a day before t -

Ottawa Senators give youngster Alex Formenton an early taste of NHL
Get over it, Ottawa Senators fans. The surprise early arrival of Alex Formenton into the National Hockey League came with considerable help of former Toronto Maple Leafs stars Wendel Clark and Gary Roberts.
Formenton, who will become the youngest player in modern Senators history (18 years, 24 days) when he makes his NHL debut Saturday against the Detroit Red Wings, was coached by Clark for four years with the Toronto Young Nationals, and last summer Formenton trained side by side, day after day -
Milnes: Canada 150 time capsule a reminder of the people behind our politics
Arthur Milnes and his wife, Alison, embarked upon a special project to mark Canada’s sesquicentennial year: A time capsule. But rather than filling it with things from around their home in Kingston, the pair have reached out far and wide to people, places and institutions with any connection to this country. The responses, whether from small towns or celebrities, have been overwhelming. This is the latest in a series of columns on his Canada 150 time capsule by Arthur Milnes.
