Another year, another round of uncertainty begins for the Senators
Welcome back to another year of fun, games, distractions, injury setbacks and who knows what for the Ottawa Senators.
One game into a new National Hockey League season and it’s oh so cloudy again inside Canadian Tire Centre.
Let’s begin with the hint of uncertainty about Kyle Turris’s future as contract negotiations continue.
The talks — or at least talk about the talks — took a twist before Thursday’s season-opening 5-4 shootout loss to the Washington Capital -

If renovating Nepean Point is going to be worth the money, we have to make it magnetic, a place people cannot help but visit.

It’s also hard to get to and there’s nothing to do when you arrive but take in the view and then leave again. A couple of sculptures are all but concealed there. The jury in Borutski’s triple murder trial on Friday heard the accused describe the killings to OPP Det. Sgt. Caley O’Neill during a five-hour interview at the Pembroke OPP detachment on the morning of Sept. 23, 2015.

Flu season could be a bad one, health officials warn
With weeks until flu season begins in earnest, health officials are already warning that it could be a tough one.
That could cause further problems for Ottawa’s already overcrowded hospitals.
Public health officials have been watching flu activity in the southern hemisphere with concern. Australia has had its worst flu season in recent memory with at least 166,000 cases and more than 370 deaths, compared to 91,000 cases the year before.
That is often — although not always — a g -

Politics matter: Pipelines, personalities and plagues
Parliament Hill was a swirl of fresh faces and a storm of news this week in the rush to get things done and squared away before the Thanksgiving break.
In a sea of pageantry, the next Governor General, astronaut Julie Payette, was sworn in to her new position, replacing David Johnston. Premiers and Indigenous leaders then gathered nearby for a meeting with the prime minister — a meeting that led to a more solid picture of what legalization of cannabis will eventually look like.

Carleton University’s Sprott School of Business will soon have a new $48-million dollar home in the heart of the campus.
Carleton’s board of governors officially approved construction of the 100,000-square-foot Nicol Building, named in honour of Ottawa entrepreneur, Tartan Homes founder and Carleton alumnus, the late Wesley Nicol.
“This new building will take the Sprott School of Business to the next level so that we can keep up with rising enrolment and continu -
How an Ottawa cancer patient is trying to make CHEO more accessible for everyone
Just before the elevators doors at opened at CHEO, Sarah Telford playfully, but pointedly, picked up a nearby yellow caution cone — the kind that warn of wet floors, spills and whatnot — and placed it in front of the elevator. When the doors opened, the elevator’s lone occupant, hospital CEO Alex Munter, was compelled to negotiate his way around the obstacle as he exited, no small feat considering that he was in a wheelchair.
For Telford, a 19-year-old Merrickville resident who -
Poison ivy on steroids: Another side of climate change
An American forest scientist has identified a new and scary face of global warming for Ottawa residents: Not drought or pestilence, but bigger and badder poison ivy.
Lee Frelich is a big name in the field of forecasting what climate change will do to forest species. He teaches at the University of Minnesota, and has been in the forest research business since the late 1970s. He knows Ontario’s forests too.
And he says there’s firm evidence that poison ivy will thrive in our expected f -
Lougheed: Canadians, let's get serious about CPR
The plea came: “Someone get help! Call 911!”
He had collapsed and wasn’t moving. We found out later that he was experiencing a massive heart attack, and was one of the unlucky ones that had no typical warning signs or chest pain. Instead, his heart flipped quickly into a deadly rhythm, rendering him unresponsive.
If this had happened alone in his garage, or during a quiet solo hike, he would likely have passed away, a tragic example of a life lost much too young.
But he d -

Gormley: Japan's foreign policy is shifting towards militarism
Somehow, a country of vital importance to Western interests, regional stability and global security is managing to hold a national election of seemingly little importance to anything at all, including itself.
On Oct. 22, Japan elects a new government. Exposed to China’s dominance and North Korea’s missiles, many Japanese citizens will base their votes on foreign policy, their choice made simpler by the fact that the two biggest contenders appear to offer the same thing.
That thing is -
Scanlan: Senators' anniversary season seeks magic, sellouts of the past
Twenty-five years ago this weekend, the Ottawa Senators played their first home opener, against the Montreal Canadiens.
There were no Kanata driving complaints then, except for the folks from Kanata who made the trek down to the Civic Centre in the Glebe to witness hockey history.
The old rink was full to bursting, but then it only took 10,500 people to fill the place. It was so long ago, Brian Mulroney was Canada’s prime minister and his wife, Mila, was getting the rock star treatment sit -
