Bagnall: The puzzling silence at Shopify
At one level it’s easy to see why Shopify adopted a low profile following allegations from Citron Research that its share price is overvalued and its marketing practices “illegal”.
Ottawa’s e-commerce technology star just last week closed the books on its third quarter and is therefore constrained in what it can say publicly until the results are published in three or four weeks.

Former NHLer Jeff Brown, family, thrilled with son Logan's NHL debut
Jeff Brown spent all day Wednesday in airports, making the trek to Ottawa.
The first flight out of St. Louis was delayed, the family missed a connection in Chicago and instead of having dinner at The Keg Wednesday night, with Ottawa Senators centre Logan Brown before his NHL debut against the Washington Capitals Thursday, they didn’t land here until after 10 p.m.
That’s OK, the trip was worth it.

Women's rights groups rally as Borutski trial begins
Women’s rights groups gathered at the Human Rights Monument on Elgin Street on Thursday afternoon in solidarity with the families of three Wilno-area women who were killed in 2015, along with others who suffer from gender-based violence on a daily basis.
The rally happened outside the courthouse as the trial Basil Borutski was getting underway inside. Borutski is facing three first- degree murder charges in the killings of Carol Culleton, 66, Anastasia Kuzyk, 36, and Nathalie Warmerdam, 48 -

Seven doctors leaving Centretown medical clinic en masse
Seven doctors are leaving an Elgin Street family medicine clinic en masse early next year.
They reassured patients late last month via email that they’ll continue to care for them after next March at a yet-to-announced new location.
But earlier this week, the owners of the Heart of Ottawa Medical Centre then sent their own message to patients calling the doctors’ decision “incomprehensible to us.” They also posted it on the centre’s website.

Former deputy auditor distorts facts in lawsuit claiming political meddling, city says
A former deputy auditor general who claims he was wrongfully sacked by the city after Mayor Jim Watson blocked his bid to become the top municipal watchdog is grossly distorting the facts that led up to his termination, the city says in its first response to the lawsuit.
Raymond Kostuch alleges that Watson prevented him from becoming auditor general because the men have different political affiliations. Kostuch was once a Tory candidate in a provincial election and Watson is a former Liberal MPP -

Women in Ontario seeking abortions don’t need to be protected from harassment and intimidation until the Liberal party can extract maximum political advantage from talking about it, the governing party has decided.

No charges against OPP officers after man took his own life
There are no “reasonable grounds” to charge Ontario Provincial Police officers after they discovered a man who had taken his own life near Hawkesbury last May, the province’s police watchdog said Thursday.
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit was investigating the death of a 41-year-old man in St-Bernardin, near Hawkesbury, on May 13, 2016.
The agency said Hawkesbury OPP were called to Concession Road 8 in Nation Township Friday responding to reports of a man in dis -

Police, family plea for information about Inuit woman missing 6 months
Mary Papatsie has not been seen in more than 150 days.
During those five months, there has been little public attention to her disappearance. There has been no mass mobilization.
Just a few police news releases, and a growing sense of despair among those who loved her.
Her family clings to a stubborn hope — that someone, somewhere must know something.
The Ottawa woman, a mother of 10, seems to be slowly but surely fading into the ranks of Canada’s missing and murdered Indigenous wome -

Scanlan: These are the root issues at heart of Sens attendance woes
Fans and the hockey club grow weary of the topic.
Yet, the attendance issue of the Ottawa Senators is not something we can just tarp over and forget. Last spring, during the Senators spectacular run to the Eastern Conference final, Ottawa’s attendance became a national story and is likely to become one again this season, judging by the soft sales for the first two home games of the season, Thursday against the Washington Capitals and Saturday versus the Detroit Red Wings.

What Jagmeet Singh's victory should mean for minorities
At the end of the day, Jagmeet Singh’s victory as leader of the embattled federal NDP wasn’t all that surprising. He’s young, charismatic, well-dressed, of minority origin (read non-white). That last one was probably more of a clincher than we would like to admit, given his relatively average performance in defining his mandate. And he probably had Justin Trudeau to thank a little, what with all the groundwork the prime minister laid through his “because it’s 2015&r -
Public Service has more work to do on bilingualism

It marks the second milestone in a very necessary and useful conversation on language of work in the federal public service.

B& B gone: How alleged scammers, now located, met their match in an Orléans proprietress
When a couple allegedly decided to rip off Orléans’s bed and breakfast operator Cathy Boretski, they had no idea who they were dealing with.
Not only did Boretski convince them to pose for mug shots (which she would later turn over to police), she had the engagement ring they “accidentally” left behind as collateral for their unpaid bill appraised. It came from a dollar store.
