Karlsson won't be ready for Senators' season opener
The Senators won’t have captain Erik Karlsson for the Thursday night opener against Washington.
He’s still recovering from the foot surgery he had in June and needs more time before he gets medical clearance to play. That’s a lot of minutes out of the lineup but the players aren’t going to let it be an excuse.
“You’re not going to replace the style of player that Erik Karlsson is,” said alternate captain Dion Phaneuf on Wednesday. “Our goal as a gr -

The numbers add up as Logan Brown makes his NHL debut
Logan Brown had a new look Wednesday at the Canadian Tire Centre with the No. 21 on the back of his helmet.
The rookie centre can’t wait until he pulls on the Ottawa Senators’ jersey to make his NHL debut in the club’s season opener against the Washington Capitals on Thursday night at the CTC.
The 19-year-old centre, who wore No. 51 through camp, went to equipment manager John Forget on Tuesday after the skate to see if he could make the change to the No. 21 his dad Jeff wore t -

We did it. We tied a thunderstorm record today
Is thunderstormiest a word?
It should be, because Ottawa tied the record on Wednesday for the most thunderstorms in any year since records began in 1953.
Thunder rumbled and rain began to pour in the Ottawa area around 4:45 p.m. Wednesday.
Environment Canada had predicted possible thunderstorms, with southwest winds at 20 km/h gusting to 40 and a high of 25 C that would feel more like 30 with the humidity.
It was expected to clear up by late evening and dip to 9 C.At 4:33pm today, the #Ott -
'Baby Face Brass' shoulders his way into the lineup for Sens' season opener
You might not immediately recognize him, but that will indeed be Derick Brassard wearing No. 19 for the Senators on Thursday night.
Just a younger looking version, that’s all.
A week-and-a-half after his 30th birthday, Brassard was minus the beard he has worn for “a long time” for the last practice prior to the season opener against the Capitals. Not because he was worried about it suddenly having flecks of grey, either, or that he’s determined to get a fresh start to the -

Game Day: Senators vs. Capitals
WASHINGTON CAPITALS at OTTAWA SENATORS
Thursday, 7:30 p.m., Canadian Tire Centre
TV: TSN5, RDS2
RADIO: TSN1200, 94,5 uniqueFM
FIVE KEYS
1. STICK TO IT: In front of an opening-night crowd they want to bring back, Senators can’t get tricked into going toe-to-toe with a team that last season was third in goals scored. Their own 22nd-ranked offence would almost certainly get smothered. To have a chance, they must adhere to Guy Boucher’s system.
2. STAY OUT OF THE BOX: While the Senators -

Laurier bike lane audit raises the standard of future cycling infrastructure
The Laurier Avenue segregated bike lane safety audit could put pressure on city council to elevate the standard for building new cycling lanes in Ottawa.
In an ideal scenario, the east-west bike lanes in the downtown core would be raised, completely coloured green, have their own traffic signals and pass through intersections that protect cyclists as the lanes cross vehicular paths.
The audit, whose results were released this week, has set the bar for safe cycling infrastructure as the city look -
