Basil Borutski remained silent as a plea of not guilty was entered on his behalf Monday at the opening of his trial on three counts of first-degree murder.
The 59-year-old, who stands accused in the September 2015 killings of Anastasia Kuzyk, 36, Nathalie Warmerdam, 48, and Carol Culleton, 66, said nothing as he was arraigned on the charges, and repeatedly declined to respond when called upon.
“His silence deems we are ready to proceed,” said Justice Robert Maranger, noting the court

Ottawa’s convention centre won’t be able to make a $4-million payment on a loan it still owes for its construction, the centre’s bosses have told the provincial government.

Ontario government launches inspection after verbal abuse of long-term care resident
The provincial Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care launched an inspection at the city-run Peter D. Clark long-term care home immediately after learning last week of the verbal abuse of an elderly patient there.
“The ministry takes any allegation of resident abuse, neglect or improper care very seriously which is why an inspection was immediately initiated,” a spokesperson said in a statement.
That was one of several actions taken in response to the abuse in which a personal support -
City pumping $120K into plaza for big Ottawa sign, businesses lament parking loss
The city is paying $120,000 to create a new pedestrian plaza in the ByWard Market so the big Ottawa letters have a proper backdrop.
But some business owners near the new plaza, which the city is constructing at York and Sussex streets, still hate that full on-street parking capacity on York Street won’t be reinstated after the teardown of Inspiration Village.
“I just shake my head,” said Christine Shaikin, manager of The Modern Shop across from the plaza construction site.

Las Vegas, Edmonton: Was it terrorism and does it matter?
It has been a trying couple of days on the North American continent. On Saturday, a 30-year man struck a police officer directing traffic outside a CFL game, exited his vehicle to stab the officer repeatedly, fled the scene, got into a second vehicle, fled a police stop and drove erratically down an Edmonton street before his vehicle was disabled and he was arrested, though not before injuring four pedestrians.
On Sunday, a man in a Las Vegas hotel opened fire on a crowd attending a music festiv -
Mark Guiliana Jazz Quartet CD reviewed
Jersey (Motema)
Mark Guiliana Jazz Quartet
Earlier this summer, drummer Mark Guiliana played in two of the Ottawa Jazz Festival’s very best concerts.
The impact of his first appearance was, well, to be expected. Guiliana was in the Donny McCaslin Group when the star saxophonist’s acclaimed and much-anticipated electric band raised the roof in the National Arts Centre’s Studio with its pulsing, grooving, high-energy brew of hip-hop-and-electronica-meets-jazz. Guiliana was genera -

U.S. troops to be in Afghanistan for at least another decade, says senate committee chairman
Republican Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, is warning Americans to be ready for an even longer war in Afghanistan. He told NBC’s “Meet the Press” that he expects U.S. troops to be in Afghanistan for another 10 years. That’s because Afghan security forces can’t handle on their own the fight against the Taliban and other insurgent groups.
“Are we likely to have troops in Afghanistan for the next decade? Sure,&rd -

Gormley: Bloodshed boosts Catalonia's case for independence
It is true that Barcelona and Madrid have never agreed on whether Catalonia has the right to break away from Spain. It is also true their disagreement became nightmarishly violent on Sunday when the region, defying court orders, held a rogue independence referendum and the state, defying any common understanding of human decency, injured about 1,000 defenceless voters with rubber bullets and fists.
They do, however, share one opinion on the matter: Their opponent is a traitor to democracy, -

“I love working for this company,” said the 25-year-old, a former cook and kitchen worker, as well as an axe-throwing coach. “You never know what you are going to be doing the nex -

City should manage long-term care homes
Re: Clearly, the city can’t handle long-term care, Sept. 28
I strongly disagree with Randall Denley’s call for the City of Ottawa to get out of long-term care services. Carleton Lodge provides one of our family members with professional and compassionate care in safe and comfortable surroundings.
There is no doubt that I feel much more comfortable and at ease since our family member moved to Carleton Lodge from a for-profit long-term care home. -
U.S. health care debate should prompt soul-searching in Canada
Canadians love our health care. Apart from the sporadic article showing that our health care system lags behind most OECD countries based on outcomes per dollar spent, or the occasional report of somebody dying while waiting for treatment in the ER, most of us are under the illusion that our health care system is the envy of the world.
For many election cycles now, there has been no real discussion on major health care reform. Tweaks? Absolutely. Provinces pleading for more money from the federa -

Petawawa-based combat engineers earmarked for new Iraq mission
Canada has sent a small team of Canadian Army engineers to observe ongoing explosive-threat training the Iraqi military is receiving under a NATO program. This is the first step in plans to have Canadian combat engineers providing such training to the Iraqis later this fall.
The size of the team, and exactly where it will be operating in Iraq, has yet to be determined. But most of the combat engineers will come from Garrison Petawawa, according to the Canadian military.
The training will involve -
How to spot the signs of abuse or neglect in a child
Suspicious bruises, odd behaviour, frequent absences from school. Whatever the reason, according to The Children’s Aid Society of Ottawa (CASO), if something makes you question if a child is being properly cared for at home, the best thing to do is to call and report it.
“Some people tell me they are afraid of reporting because they feel like they are intruding, or ask themselves: What if I’m wrong? From my experience, if your gut is telling you something is wrong, then it prob -
