15 Great Canadian Stories: Tommy Prince, the decorated and forgotten war hero
“He used to carry a pair of moccasins in his bag with him. He would never tell anyone where he was going, but would just slip away in the night. The Germans thought he was a ghost or a devil. For over a year, Rideau-Vanier Coun. Mathieu Fleury has been one of city council’s most vocal backers of a supervised drug-injection site to save Ottawa drug users from overdoses. Friday, protesters crowded outside Fleury’s city hall office, calling him everything but a killer. -
Warrenspiece: Alex Formenton looks to beat the odds with Senators
National Hockey League history and conventional wisdom suggests Alex Formenton will be summoned to a meeting with Ottawa Senators general manager Pierre Dorion at some point following Saturday’s preseason game in Montreal.
The message will be as positive as possible, with Dorion praising Formenton for having a training camp that wildly exceeded expectations and assuring him that his future in the organization is bright, but — and there usually is a but with teenage prospects — -
'Bad apples' undermining long-term care residences: MacLeod
Ontario’s health minister needs to make it clear to long-term care home administrators and staff that verbal abuse like that which occurred at Ottawa’s Peter D. Clark home won’t be tolerated, says Conservative MPP Lisa MacLeod.
MacLeod said it’s likely a case of “one or two bad apples” but incidents like these can stain an institution and undermine confidence in the system.
“I think the minister of health needs to come out with a very clear message -

Fury about to get the boot from USL playoff contention
The catchy phrase for chasing the United Soccer League Championship is “Race For The Golden Boot.”
Any game now, Ottawa Fury FC will earn a boot all right … a boot right out of USL playoff contention.
With just three games remaining in the regular season, nothing short of a victory against the Charleston Battery at TD Place stadium on Sunday afternoon will keep 13th-place Fury FC (7-10-12) in the race.
Winning is something Fury FC hasn’t accomplished since Aug. 12 agains -
Q&A: Stittsville's Erica Wiebe and her WWE adventure
It’s been an eventful year for Stittsville’s Erica Wiebe. After winning a gold medal at the 2016 Summer Games in Rio — who can forget her tearful rendition of O Canada on the podium? — Wiebe has continued her training with the national team in Calgary.
But she’s dipped her toe into the pro wrestling circuit, too. In January she travelled to Delhi as captain of the ‘Mumbai Maharathi’ in the second season of the Indian Professional Wrestling League. And la -
Ardeth Wood's brother wants to clone the majestic oak named in her honour after violent storm
Ottawa’s most storied tree is in perilous shape after about one-third of its trunk was sheared away during a fierce thunderstorm on Wednesday.
It will likely take at least a week before the fate of the Dominion Arboretum’s majestic Bebb’s oak is decided.
Ottawa residents have picnicked in the oak’s gracious shade and had their wedding photos taken beside its massive trunk, which bears a plaque in honour of Ardeth Wood, the 27-year-old graduate student who disappeared in 2 -
Ravens hope to rule Panda Game again
The Carleton Ravens are looking at Saturday’s Panda Game as must-win, not so much because they want to hold Pedro the Panda again, but rather because they desperately need wins to stay in the Ontario University Athletics football league playoff hunt.
With a win and three losses and a matchup with the first-place Western Mustangs next week, the Ravens really need to beat the cross-town Ottawa Gee-Gees, something they did 43-23 in last year’s Panda showdown.
“It didn’t matt -
Charges dropped against two budtenders caught up in pot shop raids
Charges have been dropped against two of the clerks charged in police raids on Magna Terra Health Services marijuana dispensaries last spring.
It’s the first time prosecutors in Ottawa have withdrawn charges against “budtenders” working at illegal pot shops. That’s in contrast to Toronto, where prosecutors have thrown out many of the drug trafficking charges against marijuana store clerks.
A total of seven people were charged in the raids on Magna Terra outlets on C -
After tragic death of teammate, Gee-Gees refocus on Panda Game
Ask anybody. To know Loïc Kayembe was to love him.
The smile, the laugh, the warmth. He was the ultimate teammate, a leader, a high-character guy every group needs to become a team, to help pull everybody together as one.
On Saturday, the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees will play what is always an important game for them — their annual Panda Game showdown against the Carleton Ravens, their crosstown rivals — without Kayembe, who died in his sleep early Sunday at 24.
