Ottawa Senators goaltender Mike Condon approaches the on-going social protests in the United States from an intriguing place.
Brought up outside Boston as the son of a Massachusetts State Trooper, his childhood wasn’t one of luxury, but he parlayed athletic talent into a scholarship at Princeton University. As a political science major, he also has the educational background to discuss the issue of National Football League players kneeling for his national anthem from a scholarly position.

Ottawa Senators appear to be set in goal for the next three seasons
Pierre Dorion couldn’t wipe the smile off his face.
A couple of hours after the signing of Craig Anderson to a two-year contract extension was made official, the Ottawa Senators general manager was happy to have both his goalies under contract for the next three seasons.
With backup Mike Condon signed to a three-year, $7.2 million deal in the off-season and Anderson under contract for an average of $4.75 million beginning in 2018-19, the Senators appear to be in good shape in net.

'Absolutely ludicrous': Minto tenants upset visitors will have to pay
A group of angry tenants has filed an application with the Landlord and Tenant Board in an attempt to overturn Minto Group’s decision to charge for visitor parking at many of its Ottawa rental buildings.
Tenants in at least five Minto-operated buildings have received notices during the past two months, announcing that paid parking will be put into effect for visitors.
The notices said that metered parking was being introduced because too many tenants were using the visitors’ spots. P -

For over a year, Rideau-Vanier Coun. Mathieu Fleury has been one of city council’s most vocal backers of a supervised drug-injection site to save Ottawa drug users from overdoses. Friday, protesters crowded outside Fleury’s city hall office, calling him everything but a killer.
About 100 supporters of Overdose Prevention Ottawa and its “pop-up” tent in a Lowertown park chanted “Shame!” and demanded he “man up!” and face them.

Capital Voices: 'You just get to spend time with your pet more, and I love doing that'
To mark Canada’s sesquicentennial, the Citizen’s Bruce Deachman met and photographed 150 people in the Ottawa area, encouraging them to tell their stories that, combined, painted an intimate portrait of the region and the people who live, work and play here. The series, which was published daily leading up to Canada Day, was called Capital Voices. It continues on a somewhat less rigorously defined schedule.

Brassard could play in season opener next Thursday
Ottawa Senators centre Derick Brassard couldn’t help but laugh when captain Erik Karlsson was the first player to hit him hard Friday.
Brassard, who has been rehabilitating his surgically repaired right shoulder throughout training camp, has taken a major step forward by being cleared to take contact at practice.
The twist is that Karlsson, recovering from his own off-season foot surgery – and not yet cleared to receive hits himself – provided the first test.

Downtown heritage battle puts heats into Gatineau election
Expanding the heritage status of a downtown Gatineau neighbourhood would restrict condo development that would bring jobs, new homes and tax revenues, says a business group backing downtown development.
Gatineau has proposed heritage status for the entire Museum District, a neighbourhood of narrow streets and old houses just north of Place du Portage and Gatineau City Hall. Many of the old homes are now restaurants or law offices.
The district has about 50 buildings, including the Collège -

Egan: Compassion is not a 'system,' nursing care not a set of rules
So, inevitably perhaps, we are going to have an outside investigation into “systemic” failures at Ottawa’s four municipally-run nursing homes.
Why? Can someone tell me what kind of “system” prevents a personal care worker from asking a disabled woman, 85, with memory problems: “Why is it taking you so long to die?”
Human beings are capable of monstrous behaviour, even those, evidently, trained to be care workers for the vulnerable. What kind of -

Reid: Big Alcohol sells women 'connectedness'
As I came into womanhood, and began to define who I was, drinking became intrinsically linked to that self-image. I realized quickly that I could drink more than a lot of the other young women I knew. I didn’t throw up while I was drinking, I didn’t shut myself down as soon as I started to feel drunk. This adult Bailey could drink with the boys, could go all night, could pound beers, could keep up.
I have no idea if I was as sloppy then as I am now, or if that’s just something -

Spencer: No, Hugh Hefner didn't bring enlightenment about sexuality
The legacy of Hugh Hefner can be seen, in part, in the convulsions the Ottawa Public Library recently endured as it debated what to do if customers watched porn on its computers. Toss them out? So 1950s! Respect their freedom of expression (while asking for discretion)? That we contemplate this second question in 2017 is surely one bequest of the Playboy emperor.

The path travelled: Beatrice Riddell took on the sexist world of financial journalism

She paddled her canoe frequently from her parents’ cottage to meet with MacCallum’s friends, who included the Group of Seven artist A.Y. Jackson. One day, Bea set up her own easel and tried using oils to paint her own landscape. When she asked for pointers, Jackson strolled over to have a look.
