Teenager Formenton gets another shot versus Winnipeg
Ottawa Senators coach Guy Boucher is giving Alex Formenton a shot on the fourth line against the Winnipeg Jets on Wednesday.
That’s nothing new.
Only four months ago, Formenton was serving as a fourth-liner for the powerful London Knights of the OHL.
It’s a stunning rise for the speedy 18-year-old left-winger, who scored a grand total of zero points in 14 playoff games for London last spring.
“I was playing a third-line role up until the trade deadline and we got some higher-en -

Reevely: Tax changes will cause doc apocalypse in Ontario, doctors claim implausibly
Ontario will lose two-thirds of its doctors after Finance Minister Bill Morneau changes the tax rules for their personal corporations, if you believe a survey by a group called Concerned Ontario Doctors, which you shouldn’t.
Over 40 percent of current Ontario doctors say they’ll bail out, the survey found — move to another province or country, or just give up on medicine altogether. Another quarter says they’ll retire earlier, continuing to work not being worth the effort -
After 15 years abroad, jazzman Kenji Omae returns to Canada to teach at StFX
Canadian saxophone fans rejoice – after more than a decade abroad, Ottawa-born tenorist Kenji Omae is back in the country.
Now teaching at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, N.S., Omae, who is in his early 40s, was a cornerstone of the Seoul jazz scene for almost 15 years, where he also taught at the Dong-Ah Institute Of Media And Arts and Paek-Che Art College.
During that time, he wasn’t entirely absent from the jazz radar, provided you knew where to look. Omae has three C -
With Lindley starting at QB, Redblacks need to be in sync
With the “Who’s going to start at quarterback?” question lingering into Wednesday’s practice, Ottawa Redblacks head coach Rick Campbell was not “evasive” in his answer.
For the second straight week, it’ll be Ryan Lindley, this time facing the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Friday night at TD Place. Judging by what happened at Wednesday’s practice, Drew Tate (shoulder, ribs and a cut on his elbow) will be the backup quarterback, with Danny Co -
Egan: Chased to death — we need smarter ways to pursue suspects
On the afternoon of Sept. 15, the OPP managed to capture a suspected killer — the subject of a two-province manhunt — by using a spiked belt to disable his vehicle on County Road 132 near the village of Dacre, deep in Renfrew County.
Once crippled, the SUV plowed through a flower bush and came to rest against a stone fence, according to a couple startled in their rural home.
Consider the highly-dangerous moment. The driver was not only a suspect in his wife’s slaying but was li -

Senators goaltender Craig Anderson says he would go to White House
After deflecting away pucks at practice late Wednesday morning, Ottawa Senators goaltender Craig Anderson did his best to deflect away any political questions that came his way.
Anderson, who was born in Chicago and spends his off-seasons in Florida, acknowledges it’s impossible to not be aware of the anti-Donald Trump protests which took over the NFL last weekend. Countless players opted to kneel during the playing of the Star Spangled Banner — protesting against overt racism, socia -

Glavin: Persecuted Kurds have few friends (including us)
Here’s something that doesn’t happen very often. On one of the deepest tectonic stresses underlying the blood-soaked ground of the Greater Middle East, an orderly referendum carried out this week in the most exemplary democratic fashion in Northern Iraq has pitted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, European radical leftists and one of the most persecuted minorities on the face of the earth against U.S. President Donald Trump, Syrian mass murderer Bashar Assad, Turkish strongm -
Why veterans should 'Take a Knee' at the Invictus Games
Without a doubt, Canada’s disabled veteran athletes competing at this year’s Invictus Games in Toronto are worthy of the public’s respect and admiration. Day by day, competition after competition, this special, elite element of our disabled veteran community is living up to the motto of the games:

Finding the will and the strength to compete, and being selected for the Games, will certainly help these indivi -

Scrubs-wearing burglary suspect made illicit house calls: Police
The Ottawa police break and enter unit is looking for a woman in scrubs who’s accused of entering unlocked apartments in a south-end building earlier this month.

UK Def Sec warns Boeing future work could be in jeopardy because of actions against Bombardier
Boeing is celebrating its victory over Bombardier, with the U.S. government deciding that duties of up to 220 per cent should be levied against Bombardier C-Series civilian aircraft.
But that victory has all but scuttled the Canadian government’s purchase of 18 Super Hornet fighter jets from Boeing.
Now the British government is warning that Boeing may face some difficulties on future defence contracts in the United Kingdom.
“Boeing is a major partner of the defence and one of the bi -
Police hope to follow trail of shoes to solve break-ins
Are these your shoes? Gatineau police want to know.
No, honestly.
In possibly the oddest police investigation of the week, Gatineau police are hunting for the owners of these rubber slip-ons, hoping to get information about a series of break-ins.
It began with a call to police back on Sept. 6 that someone was prowling around the back yards on Châteaufort Street. Officers arrived and arrested a man inside one of the homes there.
Kervin Irwin John, 40, has been charged with illegal entry, an -

UK buyer bids $550,000 for historic Currie Victoria Cross at auction
A private buyer from the United Kingdom had the winning bid for a Canadian Victoria Cross awarded to Lt.-Col. David Currie during the bitter fighting in Normandy in 1944.
Currie’s VC and related medals and memorabilia sold for $550,000 at an auction Wednesday in London. The price was $50,000 above the minimum bid for the items. A 20-per-cent buyer’s premium raised the total cost to the buyer to $660,000.
Since the medals are considered culturally significant, they won’t be allo -

Denley: Why's the city so bad at long-term care?
Last week’s meeting of the city’s social services committee should have been an accountability session for city managers who have done such a poor job running long-term care homes that they had to be ordered by the province to do better. Instead, it turned into a group hug with the councillors who are supposedly there to make sure the city-run homes meet standards.
In a fine example of misplaced empathy, committee chair Diane Deans said she understood that the last few months have be -

Thunderstorm watch issued for region, cooler weather in sight
The autumnal heatwave is ending Wednesday, perhaps with a literal bang as the weather office has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the capital region.
A cold front is coming down the pike, colliding with the warm front that’s been hunkered down for days. The main concern, the weather office notes, is for the high winds.
Another 30 C September day is forecast for Wednesday but the clouds are expected to roll in, bringing a 60-per-cent chance of showers.
It’s expected to clear up -

After 12 calls for help this month, Quebec police ask hikers to plan ahead and use caution
The Sûreté du Québec has issued a plea to hikers who may be planning to head into Gatineau Park and other wooded areas to see the fall colours to plan carefully and take steps to stay out of trouble.
