Todd Coon and his sister Patsy were “scooped” by child welfare authorities when they were just toddlers in the wake of a 1966 Winnipeg house fire. Coon’s father could made only one request — that his children be adopted together.
The pair were shuffled through foster homes over two years before they were adopted by a family in Ontario. For Coon, it was far from a happy childhood. “I seemed to be bullied because of my skin colour. I didn’t know why,” says

'He was always happy': Family, friends mourn sudden loss of Gees-Gees player
When Loic Kayembe was growing up in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, his nickname was “Loic Star” — not because of his athleticism, but because of the way he made people feel.
“He loved to dance, he would always make jokes and make us laugh, and he loved his mother more than anything,” said his older sister, Coralie Kayembe, on Tuesday. “He was always happy, always smiling, and he was extremely protective of his (three) sisters.”

Woman, 65, killed in 'devastating' Arnprior crash during police chase
A police chase that ended in a fiery crash and the death of an Arnprior grandmother has left at least one witness questioning whether police should have called off their pursuit.
“The chase should never have happened,” said Eric Bayley, who saw the “devastating” crash and took a photo of the truck just as it exploded.
“If the guy robbed a bank they would have got him sooner or later. It was a stolen vehicle. Big freakin’ deal. Now a poor grandmother, mother, s -

Reevely: Stop Ontario jails from putting sick inmates in solitary, rights commission demands
Ontario’s corrections ministry has reneged on a deal to stop stuffing mentally ill jail inmates in solitary confinement because it doesn’t know what else to do with them, the province’s chief human-rights commissioner says.
This is perhaps the worst of the scandals in our provincial jails and it’s still going on, four years after a landmark agreement to stop it. So Renu Mandhane is launching a complaint aimed at ordering the government to do what it said it would do back -

A leading Ottawa defence lawyer says the ability of Google’s search engine to thwart court-ordered publication bans has profound implications for the criminal justice system.

Ismael Habib’s girlfriend in Gatineau thought he was too involved with ISIS, while his Kalashnikov rifle-toting wife in Syria told him he was not involved enough, and he should move his rear end to the war zone.
The two women did not get along, with Habib ambivalent in the middle, speaking of a “loving relationship” with the girlfriend while assuring his wife he was eagerly on his way to the paths of glory.

Lowe: Supervised injection sites offer hope, not just drugs
I can’t believe there is resistance to providing safe injection sites.
I think people have forgotten – or perhaps never considered – that addicts are people. Someone’s daughter, son, brother, sister, cousin, mother, father. Someone who once had hopes and dreams for themselves. Hopes and dreams that got lost in the morass of dependency on drugs. Someone for whom many other people had great hopes and dreams as well. Our job as citizens is to try to ensure that they live to -
Comfort food: Three Ottawa chefs take home-style cooking to the next level
For some, it’s mashed potatoes and gravy or a grilled cheese sandwich. For me, it’s rice pudding. Whatever the dish, it’s all comfort food – warm, satisfying concoctions that remind us of childhood and the people who cooked for us.

Strong entries make predicting winners for this year's Housing Design Awards a mug's game
It’s getting harder and harder to pick out the winners.
So says builder Peter Saturno, who is one of the judges for this year’s Housing Design Awards.
“I was shocked at the lack of disparity,” says the past president of the Ontario Home Builders’ Association. “The strength of the entrants made it a very tight race. In most of the categories, there were no clear favourites… I have no idea who is going to win any category, they were that close.”

No longer a fortress: The new NAC invites the community in
Big performing arts centres have traditionally been Fortresses of Culture; places where people of a certain class and with a specific interest attend concerts in the evening, having paid sometimes hundreds of dollars. It is a limited and, many would say, an elite audience.

You could spend an entire vacation in Costa Rica soaking in the sun on a beautiful beach, but most come here to explore the vast areas of untouched wilderness that make this tiny Central American country one of the most biodiverse in the world.
Costa Rica has transformed itself into a premiere eco-destination by setting aside almost one-quarter of its land as nature reserve, allowing visitors to enjoy animals in their natural setting. And to make sure that these areas are available for future ge -
Many strong choices: It's tough to predict the winners for this year's Housing Design Awards

Trottier: North Korea's war of words doesn't mean real war
Let us not confuse an escalating war of words between North Korea and the United States with an actual escalation towards war. The threats by both sides are meant as a substitute for, rather than a prelude to, war. However, the risk – which has existed since the Korean War – is that such threats can be misinterpreted by one or both sides and lead to inadvertent armed action. Hence the concern of Canada and the international community to de-escalate the rhetoric.

Cohen: Yes, war with North Korea is a real possibility
Be afraid. Be very afraid.
Ignore the diversions in the United States: athletes kneeling or standing during the national anthem; Republicans flailing and failing again on health care; a kick-boxing creationist possibly becoming senator from Alabama. Calamity looms elsewhere.
We are hurtling toward war with North Korea. It may be as early as next month. It may not be deliberate. It may be what no one wants or expects. It may be mischance, misperception and misfortune.
With each day of threats and -
Injured bird of prey flies to unknown fate after Kent Street crash
An injured hawk that flew away from its determined rescuer would have stood a better chance of survival if bystanders had tried to capture it, says Anouk Hoedeman of Safe Wings Ottawa.
As it was, the injured bird — likely a juvenile Cooper’s hawk — flew away to an unknown fate, Hoedeman said.
“The moral is to act right away. Call us right away. But often there is something they can do. They can just wrap the bird. A bird of prey is a little different because they can inju -

Arnprior woman, 65, killed in 'devastating' Arnprior crash

“The chase should never have happened,” said Eric Bayley, who saw the crash and took a photo of the truck just as it exploded.
“If the guy robbed a bank they would have got him sooner or later. It was a stolen vehicle. Big freakin’ deal. Now a poor grandmother, mother, sister is dead.
