Ontario organ donation increased 57 per cent after new policy introduced
Organ donation in Ontario increased 57 per cent over the past decade after the province became the first in Canada to allow and promote donations after “circulatory determination of death.”
The figure comes from a study published Monday in the Canadian Medical Association Journal that looked at what happened after Ontario changed its policy in 2006.
“The study really highlights the significant increase in the number of donors,” said Dr. Sonny Dhanani, one of the aut -

Loic Kayembe, 24, the Gee-Gees’ starting defensive end, died in his sleep early Sunday morning, according to a press release from the university on Monday.
The six-foot-one, 255-pound Kayembe was in his third year with the team and was a student in the Faculty of Social Science.
“Loic brought energy and joy to the game and to his teammates. He was a core member -
City approached turf maker for new price after failed contract competition
Faced with operating a million-dollar sports field that football clubs refuse to rent, the city reached out to the supplier of its preferred replacement turf to negotiate a cheaper price on a full surface swap-out.
Another $800,000 will be sunk into the field after the city found a way to knock down the cost from the nearly $1.2-million bid price.
The city asked for bids on the Nexxfield NextGen Reverse turf product and installation but received only one response from the approved Nexxfield inst -

Once-slice-or-two pizza debate misses the point, say diet experts
An Orléans Catholic school is getting some spicy responses – from “what nonsense” to “just dumb” and “none of their business” – for limiting kids to a single slice at weekly fundraiser pizza lunches. But some experts say the social media debate misses the point when it comes to kids, fast food and schools.“ -
Spencer: Taking The Knee – as told by a Canadian
Among the characteristics, both large and small, that separate Canadians from Americans must surely be their attitudes toward their respective national anthems.
The Americans belt out The Star-Spangled Banner with deep passion. They sing of the “rocket’s red glare” and “bombs bursting in air.” We, in contrast, shuffle our feet and murmur about “true patriot love” and “glowing hearts.” The U.S. anthem’s second verse highlights “hav -

Dawson: Liberals' impaired driving bill has civil liberties problems
The veil of grief and the badge of noble intent aren’t guarantors of improved policymaking. Just because a law is meant to do good – as with the federal Liberals’ reforms to impaired driving legislation – doesn’t mean it will.
Between 1986 and 2015, there was a 65-per-cent drop in impaired driving rates, says Statistics Canada. Nevertheless, around 1,000 people are killed annually in Canada, and some 60,000 injured, according to the best estimates of -

Government must share info on Infrastructure Bank
In 40 countries around the world, this week is “Right to Know” week, a time when citizens look at the transparency of their government. Just how much are we allowed to know about the way our governments make decisions?
Right to Know Week is a perfect time for Canadian citizens to look at the federal government’s new Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB). The bank was created to encourage the development of infrastructure in Canada, but if the federal government proceeds with this pl -
NORAD, Lt.-Gen. St-Amand appear at odds with Mattis, NATO Treaty
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has somewhat suggested he might be open to rethinking Canadian involvement in the U.S. ballistic missile defence system.
Although he hasn’t at this point reversed the decision of previous Canadian governments not to become involved in the U.S. ground-based missile defence system, news media outlets point out he opened the door, albeit a little, when he acknowledged his government will look at how to deal the situation with North Korea’s missiles.

15 Canadian Stories: Helen Betty Osborne, a murder that resonates nearly 50 years later
Decades before the inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, the abduction and murder of Helen Betty Osborne in The Pas, Man., in 1971 — and her family’s 16-year wait for justice — forced Canada to confront the issue of racism toward its Indigenous people. This is one of 15 Canadian stories the Citizen presents as part of its ongoing Canada 150 coverage.
Helen Betty Osborne moved to The Pas because she dreamed of being a teacher.

Gatineau Olympiques game melts down in the mist
Thick fog blanketed the ice Sunday as the Gatineau Olympiques kicked off their season Sunday.
The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League game against the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada had to be put off after the first period because excessive heat inside the aging Robert Guertin Arena combined with deteriorating ice conditions that were judged unsafe for play.

Searching for news on Google can return victim and offender names under strict pub ban
New and startling evidence of Google’s ability to possibly defeat court-ordered publication bans has emerged as an Ottawa law firm prepares a class-action lawsuit against the search engine giant.
The Citizen has found that, in two high-profile Ontario cases, Google searches aimed at finding online news coverage of the trials will return “related searches” that include the names of individuals shielded by the courts.

The government has become a control-freak, as demonstrated by recent changes to liquor regulations and the proposal that the LCBO sell pot. We might rename it the Liquor and Pot Control-Freak B -

Celebrity cult must go from politics
Re: Trudeau keeps his sunny ways at United Nations, Sept. 22

As the House of Commons Standing Committee on Health discussed the Cannabis Act last week, there has been a lot of chatter about providing expedited – if not free and automatic – pardons to people with simple possession convictions.
This is a step in the right direction, but there are thousands of other people with different kinds of criminal records who are now law-abiding, yet face discrimination as it relates to employment and access to other basic necessities who need similar con -
