SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — This will be a homecoming for Dion Phaneuf.
Yes, this small city of 14,500 is thrilled to host a National Hockey League exhibition game between the New Jersey Devils and the Ottawa Senators, but the most excited person in the Credit Union Centre may be wearing a No. 2 jersey with Phaneuf on the back.

September is finally bringing what July forgot — heat records
Someone forgot to pull the plug on summer.
Want a weather record for Sunday? You can pick your favourite because we broke a lot of them at once, the way Wayne Gretzky used to. Here’s a sampling:
• Hottest Sept. 24. It reached 31.4 C at 3 p.m. The old heat record for Sunday’s date was 28.5 back in 2010, but Ottawa burned through that around lunchtime.
For context, the average high for Sunday’s date is 17.7 C.

Surgeries cancelled at Hull Hospital during nursing shortage
A shortage of nurses has forced the cancellation of some surgeries at the Hull Hospital, and will force some patients to travel to out-of-town hospitals.
The hospital has six vacancies on its nursing staff, other nurses are on sick leave or parental leave, and those who are working have been run ragged trying to keep up, said hospital spokeswoman Geneviève Côté.
“We can’t keep asking them to work overtime,” she said. “They are going to be worn out.&rdq -
City tearing turf out of Minto Field after all for $800,000
The City of Ottawa has changed its mind about Minto Field, deciding it will rip out the artificial turf after all and replace it with another less-punishing product.
Dan Chenier, the general manager of parks and recreation, said the city will pay just under $800,000 to replace the turf, rather than the nearly $1.2 million quoted by a single bidder last spring.
“We are addressing the issues brought forward by users and moving forward this fall with the replacement of the synthetic turf on t -
Canada is actually running short of bugs
When Jeff Skevington’s parents used to take the family camping in Algonquin Park, they needed to stop the car halfway and buy windshield washer fluid because of all the squished bugs. But Canada is actually running out of bugs
Skevington is now 52, and his windshield rarely hits bugs today. He is also an Agriculture Canada scientist who studies insects — and why there’s a shortage of them.
“Insect numbers are way down,” he says. “It’s a little -

Hintonburg Community Centre focus of police investigation
Ottawa Police say a body found on the O-Train tracks Sunday morning is not considered to be a suspicious death.
But early Sunday, they set out yellow tape around three sites: the tracks themselves; both the front and rear of the Hintonburg Community Centre; and around the Somerset Street bridge over the O-Train tracks, about seven blocks away.
Details of what was being investigated at the community centre were unknown, but area residents said there were blood stains in front of the building. Off -

Hardcastle: We worry about opioids – but what about alcohol?
With the Ontario government’s recent promise to devote $222 million to the opioid crisis, substance abuse is at the forefront of the minds of policymakers and the public.
Yet despite evidence to the contrary, many don’t see alcohol as a particularly harmful substance. This perception is wrong. What’s more concerning is that the government has little incentive to do anything about it.
Before criticizing the Ontario government’s conflict of interest, I -

Renegade filmmaker: Short-lived CFLer Matthew A. Cherry gets animated
If things had turned out differently 12 years ago, Mike Sutherland might be able to attach the memory of a face to the name Matt Cherry.
On the other hand, if things had been different, Chelsea Clinton might not have pledged financial support to an animation project led by independent director Matthew A. Cherry.
Same guy, different fates, based in part on a 12-day period in September 2005.
The struggling Ottawa Renegades brought in Cherry on Sept. 9 and worked him out as a wide receiver. A Unive -
Director Matthew A. Cherry tells you why he's making Hair Love
Matthew A. Cherry has directed music videos, commercials and a handful of live-action films, both shorts and feature projects. His first animation project is Hair Love, about a black man who helps care for his daughter’s hair for the first time.
The former professional football player, who has no daughter, explains why he decided to produce this film.
• The idea started with online videos of black men attending to young girls’ hair. “To me, those viral videos proved that t -
Animation 101: Money matters, director Matthew Cherry says
Animation always seemed like a bigger market in the mind of Matthew A. Cherry.
A live-action feature might attract one adult accompanied by another, he says, but animated films can draw a crowd of youngsters: Perhaps one child with several friends along for a birthday party, often shepherded by a parent.
The downside to animated production is significant cost.
A former professional football receiver with several directing credits for live-action shorts and features, commercials and music videos, -

Add Maxime Lajoie to the list of Senators prospects worth watching
Sometimes it’s hard to separate the, umm, stuff from the shovel.
Like, when Guy Boucher raves about Ottawa Senators prospects, is he: A) being genuine; B) just over the top with excitement that hockey season is starting; or C) trying to sell some goods that might help general manager Pierre Dorion fetch Matt Duchene, whose speed Boucher must sincerely adore?
For instance, here was what Boucher said Saturday morning about Maxime Lajoie, a 6-1, 183-pound defenceman who was drafted by the dra -

Senators' Erik Karlsson back on skates
Erik Karlsson has taken a big step in the right direction.
The Ottawa Senators captain skated Saturday before the club’s morning skate to prepare for the Montreal Canadiens. It was the first time he had been on the ice with teammates since having surgery in June to repair a tendon in his foot.
Though there is still no timetable for Karlsson’s return to the lineup, this has to be viewed as a positive and, with the National Hockey League regular-season opener set for Oct. 5 against the -

Chris VandeVelde has no shortage of Ottawa Senators connections.
A native of Moorhead, Minn., he has the same hometown as Brian Lee, Ottawa’s ill-fated first-round draft pick in 2005, and Matt Cullen, a Senator for 21 games in 2010-11.
VandeVelde, who is on a professional tryout with the Senators, is wearing the No. 22 that once belonged to Erik Condra. It just so happens the two were teammates with the USHL’s Lincoln Stars 13 years ago.
“I grew up with Brian,” VandeVelde -

The Ottawa Redblacks hope to get some good news from the doctor on Monday, namely that quarterback Drew Tate (shoulder and ribs) will be ready to return to action for next Friday’s home game against the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
There’s also an outside chance that Trevor Harris (separated shoulder) says he’s ready to go, if not on Friday, then certainly one week later in Vancouver against the B.C. Lions.

Departing GG spends one last afternoon with his Ottawa subjects
“Rain or shine,” the invitation to Rideau Hall said.
And the sun shone brilliantly on David Johnston as he strolled around his grounds one last time — his final official event in Ottawa as Governor General.
Former astronaut Julie Payette, 53, replaces Johnson as governor general on Oct. 2.
He was, as usual, the perfect informal host at an outdoor party, in a white shirt (no tie) and red Canada cap, relaxed and welcoming everyone.
And, also as usual, Sharon Johnston, his wi -

They went toe-to-toe, like Ali-Frazier back in the day, throughout a seven-game Eastern Conference final against Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Ultimately, the Senators died a hero, falling in double overtime in Game 7 against the eventual Cup champions. A single goal kept them out of the Cup final.
Four months later, it is as thoug
