Wark: In praise of John Le Carre, master of the spy novel
John Le Carre has produced his greatest, and probably his last, spy novel.
The master, who stole the spy fiction genre from the greedy clutches of Ian Fleming, creator of James Bond, is, after all, 86 years old. As the dust jacket for A Legacy of Spies relates, in modest fashion, he has “lived by the pen” for the past 55 years.
Before that, he was a spy. He has abided by the spy’s code and spilled none of Her Majesty’s secrets. But he has singlehandedly transformed the wo -
Milnes: How a 150 Time Capsule made me long for the view from Taber Hill
Arthur Milnes and his wife, Alison, embarked upon a special project to mark Canada’s sesquicentennial year: A time capsule. But rather than filling it with things from around their home in Kingston, the pair have reached out far and wide to people, places and institutions with any connection to this country. The responses, whether from small towns or celebrities, have been overwhelming. This is the latest in a series of columns on his Canada 150 time capsule.

Reevely: Complaints to limit use of offensive content on Ottawa's library computers
Anyone who doesn’t like what you’re reading or watching on an Ottawa library computer can make you stop, under a “refined” policy on public internet access the library is adopting.
Some patrons are using library computers to look at pornographic videos. Which, ew, people shouldn’t do that. But the policy extends well beyond that.
Back in 2003, the library board struggled with the porn problem when workers complained about being exposed to smut. The solution was to b -
Ottawa mother heads new council to help users cope with health system
When Julie Drury’s young daughter, Kate, was diagnosed with a rare and complex form of mitochondrial disease, the Ottawa mother and her family were forced to navigate the health-care system largely on their own.
Now, 20 months after her eight-year-old daughter’s death, Drury is using her painfully gained experience to help other families and patients.
Drury has been appointed chair of the province’s new Patient and Family Advisory Council, aimed at ensuring patients and familie -
Extreme heat warning issued as humidex set to reach 40 degrees
A stretch of unseasonably hot and humid weather has meteorologists issuing a heat warning, with summer-like humidex values expected to peak at 40 degrees for the first weekend of fall.
Environment Canada issued a heat warning Friday afternoon, with “unseasonably warm temperatures” expected to hit 30 degrees Celsius while the humidity will make it feel more like 40 degrees. The late-arriving heat wave, after a cool and wet summer, is expected to persist into next week.

Wayward horses corralled after making break for freedom on Albion Road
Five horses made a brief break for freedom Friday afternoon, galloping and grazing along Albion Road before being corralled.
The horses bolted from the Greenbelt Riding School at 3960 Albion Rd. around 2:45 p.m.
“We have three fences. It’s virtually impossible for them to get out — but then, obviously it is …” owner Walter Kahrer said with a laugh.
“The lead horse found an opening and then they all ran.”
The horses tasted freedom for about half an hour -

Scoffield: Politics Matters – freedoms and failures
The winner of the first week back from summer on Parliament Hill? A banner-dragging aircraft-for-rent.
On Monday, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation hired a plane to welcome MPs back to Ottawa for the fall session, pulling a giant banner that denounced Finance Minister Bill Morneau’s tax proposals as too anti-business.
Not to be outdone, opponents of investor provisions in the North American Free Trade Agreement welcomed incoming trade negotiators from Mexico and the United States with a hi -

Excessive force conviction against Ottawa officer voided by police commission
An excessive force conviction against an Ottawa police officer has been quashed after nearly a decade of legal limbo. It comes after a failed bid by Const. Egan: To criticize or harass? MPP Hillier slapped with workplace complaint for 'doing duty'
Is there a limit to how much criticism a municipal official should be expected to take from the public or a politician?
A fascinating case in tiny Tay Valley Township, just outside Perth, asks this very question, with an additional twist: the critic is MPP Randy Hillier, who finds himself dragged into an investigation under the Occupational Health and Safety Act for alleged workplace harassment.
Too indignant to remain silent, the Lanark-area MPP sent a news release this week admitting he is the -
Inuit in Ontario face heightened risk of cancer, report states
A new report highlighting the high risk of cancer facing Inuit in Ontario is a “call to action,” says Jason LeBlanc, executive director of the Ottawa Inuit organization that produced the report, along with Cancer Care Ontario.
The report, which is the first to take a comprehensive look at cancer risk factors among Inuit outside of the North, found, among other things, that Inuit living in Ottawa and other parts of Ontario have significantly higher risk factors for some cancers than n -

Editorial: Phoenix could burn up some Liberal seats in 2019
On Thursday, Canada’s privacy commissioner reported new errors with the Phoenix pay system, glitches that have exposed salary information and other data about some public servants. Daniel Therrien noted there are still weaknesses in the system’s security and there could be more privacy breaches in future.
His revelations were yet another indignity heaped atop the frustration, desperation and disgust felt by thousands of public servants who have suffered pay problems under Phoenix ove -

Federal privacy head to approach Google over linking secret, court-protected names to online coverage
The federal privacy commissioner will be approaching Google officials to obtain more information about how the company’s search engine can knit together the court-protected names of young offenders and victims with online news stories of their cases.
A spokeswoman for the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada said it was not previously aware of the issue.
While the issue raises potentially important privacy concerns, Anne-Marie Cenaiko said, the office has received no formal complai -

Take new ByWard Market shuttle to view Gatineau Park fall colours
The return of the autumn leaves in the capital brings the annual Fall Rhapsody shuttle service, with a new departure point from the ByWard Market.

Salvation Army not considering injection facility for proposed Vanier complex

What whack-a-mole has taught researchers about dementia
Nobody enjoys being tested for memory problems, a stressful process with questions that can seem irrelevant.
Dr. Frank Knoefel, a physician at the Bruyère Memory Clinic, knows about the stress. Besides, these tests are notoriously inaccurate as cognitive abilities decline. So, with help from partners ranging from universities to an Ottawa day program for adults, he tried using a computer game based on whack-a-mole.
“There’s something about a competitive game. As we know, -

Back to the '80s with Souljazz Orchestra
When Souljazz Orchestra bandleader Pierre Chretien brought his latest compositions to the rest of the band members, they suspected a prank.Brimming with synthesizers and electro-boogie sounds, the new material sure didn’t sound like it came from the brain of a jazz-funk purist like Chretien, whose vision for the band has always been heavily influenced by vintage funk of the ’60s and ’70s.But there it was, an ’80s-inspired framework for what would become Under Burning Skie -

Neve: Canada’s Indigenous rights record must improve
On Thursday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told the UN General Assembly that Canada is prepared to learn “the difficult lessons” of its long history of mistreatment of Indigenous Peoples and, as a result, other countries have much to learn from Canada’s example.
“We know that the world expects Canada to strictly adhere to international human rights standards including the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples – and that’s what we expect of ourselv -

She will win a stunning fourth term as chancellor of Germany on Sunday — that’s all. She rejects the role of global hero even as she is observed to be saving, nearly single-handedly, internationalist principles throughout the world.

Fred HerschLeaves of GrassJazz at Lincoln Center, the Appel Room, New YorkSept. 15, 2017

Please, no applause until the music ends, Hersch requested. What was to fill the room for the next 70 minutes — a rare performance of Hersch’s Leaves of Grass song cycle — would be best presented -

Spencer: Who's targeting diplomats? Don't ask Global Affairs Canada
In his 2004 biography, On Six Continents, former Canadian ambassador James Bartleman describes some of the harassment he and his staff endured from the Cubans while posted to Havana in the early 1980s. At one point, for instance, there were nuisance phone calls; on another occasion, a dead rat was nailed to someone’s door. Eventually he discovered his dog had been poisoned (along with the pets of other diplomats). At this point, Bartleman writes, he raced to the foreign ministry and told C -

And, of course, there’s the tiny -
