While the Ottawa Redblacks still hope to get dynamic returner/receiver Quincy McDuffie back into their lineup soon, it doesn’t look as if it will happen this weekend.
With the Redblacks in Montreal to play the Alouettes on Sunday, McDuffie will remain on the injured list. He hasn’t played in a Canadian Football League game since early August.
“He’s taking a lot longer than any of us, including him, would have hoped or wanted,’ Redblacks general manager Marcel Desjar

Tourists pack medical supplies for storm-ravaged regions
William Leung and Melissa Amelotte will be travelling to Cuba for a beach vacation later this month with stacks of luggage — almost all of it filled with medical supplies for the storm-ravaged island nation.
Leung and Amelotte are among dozens of local travellers who have enlisted with Not Just Tourists — Ottawa, a not-for-profit group that relies on overseas vacationers to ferry medical supplies to remote health clinics.

Linebacker Khalil Bass asks out and is released by Redblacks
Soon after a meeting with head coach Rick Campbell early Friday morning, Khalil Bass was no longer an Ottawa Redblack.
The Canadian Football League team released the veteran outside linebacker on Friday, two days before an important East Division showdown with the Montreal Alouettes.
“(Bass) wasn’t going to be starting on defence (in Montreal),” Redblacks GM Marcel Desjardins. “Serderius (Bryant) was going to start at WILL (linebacker), Khalil was going to back up (Taylor -

Grieving father locked in custody battle over deceased military daughter's remains
Betiana Mubili plunged to her death in a skydiving mishap three weeks ago, but instead of making funeral arrangements for his daughter, Viktor Mubili is locked in a custody battle over her remains, which he says are being “held hostage” in Toronto.
Betiana “Betty” Mubili, a 29-year-old Canadian Forces medic, died Aug. 27 when her parachute failed to open during a solo recreational jump with Skydive Petawawa. Her death remains under investigation by OPP and the corone -

With Clarke MacArthur out, Senators are moving on to Plan B
Losing Clarke MacArthur yet again has hit Ottawa Senators players hard.
None harder than defenceman Dion Phaneuf, whose relationship with MacArthur goes all the way back to minor hockey days.
“It’s very tough in a lot of different ways,” Phaneuf said Friday, talking about the fact MacArthur failed his medical exam on Thursday, again putting his career in jeopardy.
“For me personally, him being such a close personal friend for such a long time, it was tough to hear the new -
Collector sells hockey items to museum, hopes for permanent display
Mike Wilson can get worked up about hockey history.
So worked up that on the day he sold nearly $2 million worth of hockey memorabilia to the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, Wilson was moved to tears – not of joy, but raw emotion – at the prospect of handing off personal treasures he has been collecting for more than 50 years.
“This should be our Smithsonian,” Wilson says of the emerging hockey collection. “Every Canadian should have the opportunity to know -
Analysis: U.S. would let a nuke missile wipe out a Canadian city – then maybe it's time for a new ally?
Analysis
The debate about whether Canada should join the U.S. missile defence system continues to rage on. The latest development?
It’s the claim that the U.S. would allow a nuclear-armed missile to hit Canadian territory because the Canadian government has not signed on to be part of the U.S. continental missile defence shield.
Where did this come from? It first emerged last week in a CBC interview with the former Chief of the Defence Staff Gen. Tom Lawson. “If a rogue nation fired -

CityFolk Preview: The legendary Rodriguez —"I chose music and that's what I do"
Five years ago, the Oscar-winning documentary, Searching for Sugar Man, thrust Detroit musician Sixto Rodriguez into the spotlight. As you may recall, it was the tale of an obscure rock star who fell off the radar while his music lived on, reaching a devoted audience in South Africa. Two albums released in the early ’70s became part of the soundtrack for the anti-Apartheid movement, reportedly outselling Elvis Presley. It was widely rumoured that Rodriguez had died, but as the late director, -

Man fears city putting up barriers to participation in long-term care meetings
An Ottawa man who has spoken out about the poor quality of medical care his mother received in a city-run long-term care home, says he fears the city is putting up barriers to participation in long-term care “engagement meetings” it has scheduled for next week.
City officials promised town halls earlier this summer to talk about long-term care after the province issued a rare order telling the city to improve safety and care at its homes.
The order came amid chronic non-compliance is -

Reevely: Ottawa Centre's provincial NDP fields strongest nomination contenders in years
For Ontario’s New Democratic Party to get anywhere near power in next June’s election, they’ll have to win ridings like Ottawa Centre — which they haven’t done in 27 years.
But the governing Liberals are vulnerable. The political left is more energized than it’s been in a while thanks to Donald Trump. And the New Democrats have an eyepopping quartet of candidates seeking to carry the orange banner in the heart of Ontario’s second-biggest city.

Editorial: Corporate taxes and class warfare
Next week’s return of Parliament will bring fresh opposition attacks on Finance Minister’s Bill Morneau’s proposed tax changes for corporations. So let’s be clear about how the government should NOT pitch its plan to Canadians.

City believes there's 'new hope' for Sparks Street as it looks for design consultant
A “living statue” exhibition on Sparks Street this weekend might be the perfect event for a tourist strip that has stood still for years.

When his mother brought Leo Yerxa for his first day in residential school, he took the final steps alone.
“She was supposed to take him down the path, but she just couldn’t do it,” said former Ottawa Centre MP Paul Dewar. “So he had to walk a quarter-mile on his own.”
His years in residential school, and the cultural dislocation it caused, deeply affected Yerxa, a Governor General’s Award-winning artist and author. Yerxa died Sept. 1. He was 70.

Gormley: Joke candidates are downright good for democracy
Though it has not been officially confirmed that Finn the Australian cattle dog can sit, stay or roll over on command, he does perform a neat little trick wherein he runs for mayor of St. John’s, N.L.; for this he is either a very good boy, as various global commentators have observed, or a very bad one, if you are the sort of person who hates cute animals and humour.
It’s uncontroversial enough to say that hating animals probably makes you an unpleasant sort of person. I’d lik -

We have all heard stories about hapless criminals who belong to the “gang that couldn’t shoot straight” and we all have a good laugh.
On occasion, however, that hapless criminal is a terrorist. Hollywood shows such as 24 – where the bad guys are capable and devious and real -

While moving into a new, larger home was certainly a possibility, the homeowners didn’t want to deal with the cost and hassle of moving and so they decided to stay and add on instead.
“We needed to replace our -
