Karlsson puts contract talks aside — for now
As training camp opened Thursday, Senators captain Erik Karlsson hit on a pair of touchy organizational subjects.
That would be his own long-term future with the club and the rather abrupt departure of former long-time captain Daniel Alfredsson from his management position.
Karlsson is due to become an unrestricted free agent following the 2018-19 season. Even though official negotiations about an extension can’t begin until next July 1, the talk about a lucrative deal is in the air. Senat -
Barrhaven teen hacker plans to appeal nine-month sentence in 'swatting' case
What began as payback for a high school prank ended with a nine-month sentence Thursday for a teenage Barrhaven hacker found guilty in a series of “swatting” incidents, in which fake bomb threats and phoney hostage calls were placed around Canada and the U.S.
Ontario Court Justice Mitch Hoffman said the fake calls, which began in November 2013 and continued until the teen’s arrest in 2014, caused schools, homes and in one case a shopping centre to be evacuated.

Long-term care is in a crisis across Ontario, says NDP Leader Andrea Horwath, who is pressing the provincial government to get to the bottom of the issues with an extended public inquiry.
Horwath has met with dozens of families and residents of long-term care across the province — including 22 who joined her at the Ontario Legislature Thursday — who have told her stories of family members suffering from poor quality care, injuries and neglect while in long-term care homes.

Reevely: Patrick Brown fumbles attack on Wynne, lands in legal crosshairs himself
Ontario Progressive Conservative leader Patrick Brown won’t apologize for saying Premier Kathleen Wynne is standing trial for something, leading her lawyer to warn that the Tory leader is risking serious damages in a libel lawsuit.
It took some hard work for Brown to find the firm ground on which a party leader who has two allies standing trial for political corruption can stand and then to place her firmly on it, but here we are.

Pocket-dialed 911 calls divert resources from real emergencies: OPP
