The Canadian War Museum says it appreciates that the National Capital Commission’s board of directors decided to hold off on a decision to allow adjacent land to be used for a new Afghanistan war memorial.
“We’re just really pleased those concerns were put forward and they seem to be understood,” said Yasmine Mingay, the museum’s director of public affairs, major gifts and sponsorship.
The NCC board was asked on Tuesday to approve 2,500 square metres of land west of

Redblacks QB Harris hopes for return in 2 weeks, Tate ready to go
Since he got hurt Saturday night in a loss to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, the injury to Trevor Harris’ right throwing shoulder has been called “bruised” and a “second-degree sprain.”
On Wednesday, the Ottawa Redblacks quarterback gave it another diagnosis, admitting it was separated, but said he hopes to speed up the recovery process.
“It’s depressing, it’s deflating,” he told reporters. “They told me a certain time frame (up to -

Senators new D-man Johnny Oduya aiming to have a "redemption year"
Most hockey photos of Johnny Oduya show him wearing a thick black beard that could rival any in the NHL, at least this side of San Jose.
But when he reports to Canadian Tire Centre on Thursday morning for training camp physicals, the 35-year old defenceman will be clean-shaven and sporting a look of determination.
Oduya, signed by the Senators over the summer to bolster a blue line that lost veteran Marc Methot, is determined to wear that playoff face again. He’s also determined to p -
Downsized: Veteran Sens season ticket holder finds his seats eliminated
Imagine Robert Giroux’s surprise when he turned on the TV and saw that the Ottawa Senators seats he’s bought for the last six years were now covered by a black tarp and not for sale.
Giroux and his seats had been downsized.
“Well thank you Sens owner for kicking me out of my seats,” Giroux wrote in a comment on an Ottawa Citizen story about new team president Tom Anselmi’s decision to shrink the capacity of the Canadian Tire Centre by 1,500 this year.

Reevely: Don't let Amazon fever cost us billions
Ottawa has begun plotting its pitch to Amazon to put a giant new headquarters here, a task Mayor Jim Watson concedes might be beyond us.
“I’m realistic. This is an uphill battle for us. I’m not thinking it’s anywhere near a slam dunk. But my understanding is they said ‘North America’ and they meant ‘North America’,” Watson said, anticipating the first conference call Wednesday of the city’s “Amazon task force.”

City briefs: Parking limits extended, Hard Rock Casino, LRT expansion
City council on Wednesday reaffirmed its position that government-endorsed gambling should only happen at the south-Ottawa horse track, which is now Hard Rock Casino Ottawa.
A public consultation and council vote were requirements under a provincial regulation since the slot operation at the Rideau Carleton Raceway is being transferred to Hard Rock.
Hard Rock can install 21 tables games, such as poker and roulette, under the land-use rules for the property.
It’s believed Hard Rock will eve -
Scanlan: 'Grassroots Grannies' cycle the distance to help grandmothers in Africa
If you want something done in this country, ask a grandmother.Stephen Lewis, educator and former politician, did this more than a decade ago and it resulted in a significant contribution to African grandmothers left with orphans from the AIDS crisis that continues to rage in Africa. Cycling grannies deliver the loot to those in need
If they were so inclined, a group of very active grandmothers in the area could be excused for putting their feet up this week.
As promised, the Grassroot Grannies of Ottawa recently completed their 260-km bike ride in support of African grandmothers via The Stephen Lewis Foundation, raising $60,000 to help support families who have lost parents to AIDS-related disease. A total of 26 riders local led by co-ordinator Nancy Hough finished the three-day trek on Sept. 8, with stops en route includin -
For his new album, pianist Florian Hoefner takes inspiration from Newfoundland, his newfound home
Born and raised in Germany and educated in New York, jazz pianist Florian Hoefner has made a solo record inspired by where he now calls home — Newfoundland.
Hoefner, who is in his mid-30s, left New York for St. John’s in 2014, when his wife, Canadian clarinetist Christine Carter, was hired as a professor at Memorial University. Rather than pine for the jazz hub of the world, the pianist who came from away has made an album called Coldwater Stories, supported by the Newfoundland and L -
Pop-up injection site could close when Ottawa Public Health site opens, says organizer
A pop-up injection site at Raphael Brunet Park says it plans to continue operating — at least until Ottawa Public Health can get its own temporary site up and running in the weeks ahead.
Marilou Gagnon, an organizer with Overdose Protection Ottawa (OPO) and associate professor at the University of Ottawa, applauded OPH’s announcement on Tuesday to open its own satellite injection site on Clarence Street.
Health officer Dr. Isra Levy said the opioid crisis has created an urgent need i -
Editorial: Health unit's move to open an injection site is right
Ottawa Public Health says it plans to quickly open a supervised-injection site, which will put an end to the “pop-up” injection site that’s operating illegally in town. Good.
One of the perplexing things about the response of governments at all levels to the burgeoning opioid crisis is that Ontario has long been able to see it coming. British Columbia was hard-hit early on; we knew the mounting death toll of addicts would eventually spill into Ontario and other provinces. While -
Gatineau jail employee arrested after drugs seized
Sûreté du Québec officers have arrested a male employee of the Gatineau Detention Centre after a search at the jail turned up a variety of drugs.

They also found cellphones and smuggled tobacco.

Glavin: How Jagmeet Singh is shaking up the NDP leadership
It is surely a most unpleasant turn of events for all those New Democrats who looked to the rise of British Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and hoped that Tom Mulcair’s replacement might be cut from the same rough sort of retrograde cloth. But, as things are turning out, the odds-on favourite to win the contest for the NDP leadership is a charming, nattily dressed, 38-year-old Sikh hipster, human rights lawyer and martial-arts champion, and he is not at all what the NDP’s dreary old soci -
Men in construction gear allegedly invade Kanata home at gunpoint
Police are hunting for two men armed with handguns who allegedly forced their way into a Kanata home and robbed a lone woman Monday.
The pair, wearing spotless construction gear and sunglasses, rang the doorbell of the home on Westover Crescent, which is near the intersection of Huntmar and Campeau drives, around 10:50 a.m.
The men, armed with handguns, forced their way into the house, police alleged. While one controlled the victim, the other searched the place. They left with only severa -
Bélanger enters Gatineau mayoral race, vowing to unite 'divided' council
Clément Bélanger joined the mayoral race in Gatineau Wednesday, with no municipal experience or platform specifics but “a vision” of unity that he promises to turn into votes.
He has a little over six weeks to accomplish this. The election is Nov. 5.
Bélanger, a career federal public servant, was optimistic Wednesday as he met reporters. No experience in office? That’s as much experience as local MPP Maryse Gaudreault had when she was elected in 2008, he sa -
Spencer: Hurricane Irma and our duty to travellers
There was a reason Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland showed up at Pearson International Airport Monday to empathize with Canadians fleeing Hurricane Irma’s destruction. Just as there was also a reason that, while very sorry for their plight, she deliberately didn’t apologize for the government’s alleged laxness in helping these people get home.
Freeland’s first action was driven by the metaphorical political hurricane that threatened to accompany the returning Ca -

This year’s edition runs Friday and Saturday, Sept. 15-16, with more than 50 a -
