Today's letters (II): Genetics, pot sales and taxing doctors
What else can we inherit genetically?
Re: Can we inherit fear? Sept. 9.
Kudos for raising awareness of epigenetics, and the potency of fear and anxiety. Could you also cover research asking “Can we inherit loving kindness?” and the impact of this on health and illness?
Dr. Sue Johnson of Ottawa has a wealth of information in one of her more recent books. A powerful mindfulness-meditation practice, Metta (Loving Kindness), shows great promise. There are many other ways to “pass -
Mounties got lost, volunteers fibbed: Tales from the Canada Day trenches
Mounties guiding crowds on Canada Day didn’t know names of downtown streets, and “uninformed” volunteers made up information, says a list of key complaints from Canadian Heritage.
The document was released through the Citizen’s access-to-information request.

Nauseous and tired, Jonathan Pitre awaits gallbladder surgery
Jonathan Pitre remains in a Minnesota hospital as doctors strive to prepare him for gallbladder surgery by hiking the number of blood-clotting cells in his body.
Pitre’s gastrointestinal system is struggling to eliminate the waste chemical, bilirubin, which has yellowed his eyes and skin, and left him nauseous and exhausted.
Bilirubin is a brownish-yellow substance made when the body breaks down old red blood cells.
Doctors believe that the bile ducts of Pitre’s gallb -
Afghanistan war memorial site next to Canadian War Museum stirs controversy
The National Capital Commission is caught in another memorial controversy.
The Canadian War Museum and its architect are resisting a plan to locate the National Memorial to Canada’s Mission in Afghanistan at a site near the building.
NCC management on Tuesday recommended that the board approve the site location just west of the War Museum, but CEO Mark Kristmanson won support to defer the vote, sensing cold feet around the table.
Board member Carol Loughrey, who’s from New Brunswick, -

Reevely: Minimum wage hike will hurt some people who need help most, finance watchdog says
Raising Ontario’s minimum wage will cost 50,000 jobs and much of the money meant to help working poor people will end up in the hands of the relatively well-off, says a new analysis from the government’s Financial Accountability Office released Tuesday.
Hiking the minimum wage from $11.40 to $15 an hour by 2019 is a signature move for Premier Kathleen Wynne and her Liberal party, the biggest item on a list of labour reforms the premier says are about making Ontario’s economy wo -

Today's letters: Amazon and east-end Ottawa
Orléans should host Amazon
Re: Ottawa mayor expresses interest in Amazon campus Sept. 7.
With the city of Ottawa announcing that it is in the running to win Amazon’s second headquarters contest, many focus groups will be part of the discussion: from universities to high-tech to hydro and government, and one wishes them well. Ottawa would truly be a wonderful fit with Amazon, which values smaller, trendier, affordable, smarter cities. In other words, Richard Florida’s “cr -
War of 1812 names for Joint Support Ships are history – Protecteur and Preserver are the new names
The Royal Canadian Navy has jettisoned the names selected by the previous Conservative government for its new joint support ships and will revert to calling the vessels by the names of the previous supply ships.
The new ships will be called HMCS Protecteur and HMCS Preserver, to honour the service of those two ships over the years.
The Conservative government’s decision to name the joint support ships after War of 1812 battles never sat well with navy officers, according to defence sources -

Cohen: The environmental end-of-days is on its way
September brings the Days of Awe, the period between the Rosh Hashanah and the Day of Atonement. For Jews, it is a time of repentance, prayer and charity.
This year the Days of Awe are preceded by a new, secular interlude of anxiety. You don’t have to be Jewish to see it. You don’t have to read the Bible.
Just tune in to CNN. Listen to the warnings from officials around Hurricane Irma. To them this was the End of Days, an unprecedented, apocalyptic disaster.

How many more reports and research showing that Canadian youth have poor access to mental health and addictions care will it take for government to make mental health care and addictions a funding priority?

Firefighters rescue dog caught in Ottawa River current
Firefighters launched a rescue boat to reunite a dog and owner late Tuesday morning after the animal got caught in the current of the Ottawa River.
The dog, which looked like a Labrador retriever, was about 50 feet offshore when it was able to climb onto a bridge abutment at Lemieux Island that couldn’t be accessed on foot.
Firefighters, who feared the owner would plunge into the water to rescue her pet, warned bystanders to get out of the water for their own safety.

Sens president Anselmi says lots of negotiations remain on LeBreton Flats arena project
Ottawa Senators president Tom Anselmi made a pitch to a business audience on Tuesday to help fill the Canadian Tire Centre this hockey season, while predicting the move to a planned downtown arena is still four to five years away.

Crowley: Don't cast aside Sir John A. Macdonald
Should efforts to exile Canada’s pre-eminent founder, Sir John A. Macdonald, to the scrap heap of history be allowed to succeed? No. Anger at monuments and memorials misunderstands our history and misdirects our energy. It is not with the dead but with the living that lies the responsibility to realize further the promise of Canada. And that is why, for example, Sen. Murray Sinclair’s call to celebrate Indigenous heroes rather than vilify Sir John A. strikes the right balance.

Bagnall: A sneak peek inside Ciena's new Ottawa campus
It seems every serious tech company is doing it — Apple, Google, Nvidia, LinkedIn and, soon, Amazon.
They’re building, or have already built, vast new operations centres that celebrate the companies’ brands and provide unique working space to encourage productive employees.
Ottawa is no stranger to the trend. On Wednesday, 1,600 plus employees of Ciena Corp. will celebrate their shift from multiple locations around Ottawa to the just-completed campus alongside Terry Fox Drive i -
Protest against Boeing planned for Wednesday in Montreal
Aerospace workers will hold a rally outside the U.S. consulate in Montreal to protest Boeing’s decision to file a trade complaint against Bombardier.
Boeing alleges that the Canadian and Quebec governments heavily subsidize Bombardier, allowing it to sell its C-Series civilian aircraft in the U.S. at below market prices. Bombardier sold the aircraft to Delta Airlines. Boeing convinced the U.S. Commerce Department and International Trade Commission to launch an investigation into Bombardier -

Ten people were displaced following a stubborn fire early Tuesday in a multi-unit building at 61 Charpentier St. in Gatineau.
Gatineau fire service reports they were called to the three-unit building shortly after midnight and found flames had taken hold in a back balcony, spreading towards the roof.
The two dozen firefighters had the blaze under control within 20 minutes, but not before 10 people were forced to leave their homes.
They have been taken into care by the Red Cross for the moment.

More sunshine and highs in the 20s in a glorious forecast
You’re going to want to rise up singing.
This week keeps getting better and better with sunshine through the weekend and forecast temperatures that just keep getting hotter.
There isn’t a drop of rain expected until next week.
Environment Canada predicts that Tuesday will be sunny and 25 C but it will feel more like 28 under a UV index of 6 or high.
The low is just 6 C overnight but Wednesday will heat up fast under sunny skies to 26 C, with a humidex ‘feels like’ of 31. -
Crowley: Don't cast aside Sr John A.

A muslim scholar on what it means to be a Canadian
This year, 2017, Canadians proudly celebrate the 150th, grand anniversary of our nation.
In the last 22 years, since my landing on Canadian shores, I have witnessed Canada evolving, changing towards the better. Each day here gave me an opportunity to appreciate Canada and Canadians more, and feel privileged at being part of the Canadian tapestry. Yes, I was born in Bosnia but I am a Canadian; I am Bosnian in memory. An individual carries multiple identities at any given time.

National Capital Commission mulls asset deficit
It’s easy to forget what a vast, sprawling enterprise is the National Capital Commission, the 58 year-old federal crown corporation at the heart of the national capital region.
Unlike other federal crown companies such as Canada Post, the NCC lacks an imposing headquarters operation. Instead, it makes its presence felt in other ways. Pieces of the NCC touch just about everyone living here — from the interprovincial bridges and 15 urban parks to pedestrian walkways and 1,6 -
Anderson remains focused through hurricanes, contract status
The focus of Craig Anderson is once again being put to the test.
When the Senators’ goalie showed up at the rink last season, it was while hoping and praying that his wife Nicholle would prevail in her battle against cancer. When he returned to Ottawa last week for training camp, it was with great concern for his friends and family who were being assaulted by the hurricane in Florida.
Anderson’s own home in Fort Lauderdale was near the eye of the storm.

Impossible to have an ombudsman to police industry, homebuilders say
It’s “impossible” for the Greater Ottawa Home Builders’ Association to police the development industry and there’s no way the organization would pay an ombudsman to do that, the executive director says.
“Not going to happen,” John Herbert said Monday after receiving a letter from a councillor who wants to explore the ombudsman idea with the industry.
Kitchissippi Coun. Jeff Leiper has been compiling a list of complaints from residents about infill c -

Ryan plans to 'identify' with the player he was in playoffs
Bobby Ryan readily admits he was slow to learn the new system employed by the Senators last season, his worst in a decade-long career.
When he did catch on, he became the productive power winger they need him to be going forward.
From 13 goals (no game winners) and 25 points in 62 games, Ryan had six goals (and three GWGs) and 15 points in the 19 that mattered most.
After a summer of deliberation, he has returned to Ottawa with a theory.
“I think I was a little more aggressive (in the play -
Skydiver's death in Gatineau due to mid-air collision, missing equipment: witnesses
When Ben Dupont jumped from a plane in the skies above Gatineau on Saturday, he wasn’t wearing a device that might have saved his life.
The 27-year-old skydiver from Sudbury collided with another jumper shortly after launching himself from the plane, witnesses told the Citizen.
On Monday, Gatineau police said it was too early in their investigation to tell whether Dupont lost consciousness after the mid-air collision. However, Roman Turetskiy, a long-time skydiving friend of Dupont,
