The Ottawa Senators already have a dozen forwards signed to guaranteed NHL contracts and top Boston College prospect Colin White is among the top prospects hoping to win a spot out of training camp.
But that won’t stop the Senators from taking a look at other proven NHL veterans.
The Senators announced Monday that they have invited Chris VandeVelde to training camp on a professional tryout contract.
VandeVelde, 30, scored six goals and nine assists in 81 games with Philaelphia last season.

Cuba 'devastated' by Hurricane Irma, CARE Canada rep says
It will be months, maybe even years, before Cuba recovers from the devastation wrought by Hurricane Irma, says a CARE Canada aid worker in Havana.
“The storm was massive. Not only high intensity, but it was massive in area. It ran along the north coast, but it was felt across the entire island,” said Richard Paterson, who rode out the storm at his home in the capital. Paterson, an Ottawa native, has been CARE Canada’s man in Havana for 2 1/2 years.
“The coastal communitie -
Two men rescued following rollover near Algonquin College
Emergency crews Monday afternoon freed two men after their vehicle rolled over near Algonquin College, at the intersection of Baseline Road and Woodroffe Avenue.
Ottawa firefighters, called to the scene by police shortly before 4 p.m., stabilized both the vehicle and the two trapped inside.
Crews used cutters and spreaders. By 4:15 p.m., they had extricated the driver and passenger.
Ottawa paramedics said the men were both in stable condition at the trauma centre. -
Bruised shoulder could keep Redblacks' Harris out weeks, not months
Ottawa Redblacks coach Rick Campbell delivered some good news early Monday morning on TSN 1200.
Turns out quarterback Trevor Harris has a bruised shoulder, it’s not separated. Not only is it not a season-ending injury, Harris, who was injured when he was thrown to the turf in Ottawa’s 26-22 loss to Hamilton Saturday, could be back soon. Until then, Campbell confirmed, Drew Tate will be the team’s starting quarterback.
“I think it’s going to be a matter of weeks,&rdq -
Karlsson may not be ready to play until November
If Ottawa Senators fans were holding out slim hope for captain Erik Karlsson to be ready for the season opener on October 5, forget about it.
Take it from the horse’s mouth.
Karlsson says that it may be another “two to three weeks” before he skates on his surgically repaired left foot — including the insertion of an artificial tendon — for the first time, post-surgery. Three weeks from Monday brings us to Oct. 2.
He also suggested that he could push back the st -
Stolen urn returned under mysterious circumstances
The case of a missing urn took a strange twist over the weekend as the OPP reported that a pink urn containing the ashes of a recently deceased woman had been recovered and returned to the family.
The Pembroke detachment of the Upper Ottawa Valley OPP are continuing their hunt for the thief. The odd bit has to do with how the urn was discovered.
Police began their investigation Sept. 2 when the urn was stolen from a residence on Garden Street in Pembroke. The family had been holding -
Ottawa custodian rescues skunk with juice box on its head — without raising a stink
No good deed goes unpunished, supposedly. But Josh Gordon rescued a skunk without getting skunked himself.
Gordon, a custodian at John Young Elementary School, was walking to the front doors of the Kanata school early Friday morning when he saw a skunk running in panicky circles in a paved yard beside the main entrance of the school.
With a juice box firmly wedged on his head, the skunk couldn’t see where it was going. The critter was obviously disoriented, occasionally running head- -
Limit on tax hikes puts handcuffs on police budget
The Ottawa Police Service has cobbled together a 2018 draft budget that puts off contributions to capital reserves and information technology upgrades to satisfy financial constraints demanded by city council.
“Let city council understand, we are plugging holes here,” said Eli El-Chantiry, the chair of the police services board, after seeing the 2018 estimates Monday.
The police board’s finance and audit committee received an early look at the financial forecasts before managem -
Watchdog investigating hanging incident at Wakefield police station
Quebec’s independent police watchdog is investigating after a 29-year-old prisoner was found alive following a reported hanging at the Wakefield police station Monday morning.
The man, who’d been taken into custody by MRC des Collines-de-l’Outaouais police, was taken to hospital after he was found hanged with a blanket around 9:20 a.m. His injuries were not life-threatening.
Le Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes said in news release that it has yet to -
Egan: Sell pot just like LCBO, where boss earns $500K and clerks $27 an hour
The government selling weed to anybody is a terrible idea.
So is the creation of a subsidiary of the Liquor Control Board of Ontario to create and run a retail network.
I was noodling around Ontario’s sunshine list on Monday, the phone-book sized document that catalogues public-sector salaries over $100,000.
The LCBO has either 359 or 313 employees on the list — honestly, it was like counting jelly beans in a giant jar — including a president and CEO who made $494,308 in 2016. -
Reevely: Trials and big-money announcements kick off Ontario's longest-ever election campaign
Ontario’s legislature’s sitting after its summer break. Ministers are racing around the province announcing and re-announcing. Liberal aides are going on trial. New Democrats are trying to put attention on them. Tories want to talk about Liberal failures and hope a smooth nomination for a star candidate will take some heat off their previous candidate-selection fiascoes.
All happening at once, like the scenes in a Bosch triptych.
In Toronto on Monday, Housing Minister Peter Milc -

Editorial: How Canada can help those fleeing Myanmar
It’s hard to square the outpouring of sympathy Canadians have shown for Syrian refugees with their seeming apathy in the case of Myanmar’s Rohingya, who have been grappling with violence for years. In recent weeks, around 300,000 of them have fled their homes in the state of Rakhine.
Yet there are similarities between both crises. Just as Syrian refugees chanced crossing the Mediterranean, Rohingya have been scrambling aboard boats to get to Bangladesh, and many, mostly women an -
Woman in stable condition after Mechanicsville stabbing
A woman in her 20s was in stable condition at the trauma centre after suffering a stab wound in an incident in Mechanicsville Monday.
Paramedics said they were called to Forward Avenue, near Scott Street and Parkdale Avenue, at 12:30 p.m.
An Ottawa police spokesman said investigators have made an arrest but further details were not immediately available.
Police had been called to a residence in the 200 block of Forward Avenue at 12:29 p.m.
The woman’s injuries were not consi -
Collision, criminal charges follow dirt bike ride through Gatineau streets
A 17-year-old from Gatineau faces both criminal charges and traffic fines after driving an off-road motorbike through the streets and colliding with a Gatineau police cruiser.
Police running a speed trap saw the off-road bike on Lorrain Boulevard near Chemin Dufresne around 10 p.m. Sunday and tried to pull over the driver, but he allegedly sped off. He tried to make a U-turn on Lorrain, and that’s when he and the cruiser collided.
The young man, who cannot be named because of his age, had -
The private war of Mike Trauner: Soldier who lost both legs in Afghanistan still trains six days a week [Video]
PEMBROKE, Ont. — Every morning, Mike Trauner wakes up to war.Like clockwork, the former Canadian Forces soldier returns to that cold morning in December 2008, when an improvised explosive device detonated beneath him in Afghanistan.“I try not to think about it, but every single day, I’m reminded of it,” the 37-year-old says.“I can’t forget, -
Charlebois: Weeding out the weak parts of Ontario’s pot strategy
Ontario has become the first province to define how it intends to sell non-medicinal marijuana to the public. Around 150 stores across the province will open and will be operated by a division of the province’s liquor board, the LCBO. Marijuana won’t be sold alongside wine or liquor, but in separate, independent stores, as recommended by a parliamentary committee earlier this year. While Ontario deserves some credit for forging ahead with guidelines for its legal marijuana distributi -
Charges laid in suspected meth cook in Centretown park
A 40-year-old Ottawa man is facing production-related charges after police busted a suspected meth cooking operation at a public park picnic table last week.
He faced similar charges in February after police stumbled on an apparent meth lab in a Lowertown apartment.
Laurence Wheatcroft is charged with unlawful production of a Schedule I substance, possession or production of items used to produce or traffic Schedule I and III substances and breach of recognizance.
He will appear in court vi -
Khan: Canada must help Myanmar's Rohingya Muslims
It seems that the mass exodus of the stateless Rohingya Muslims of Myanmar, who are fleeing a brutal extermination – what many are calling a genocide and ethnic cleansing – is not enough to tug at the heartstrings of Canadians.
So much so that news of beheadings, flagellation of children, murders, rape and destruction of whole villages is not enough to hold the world’s attention, let alone Canada’s. Neither is the fact that this has been going on since well before the Syr -
Adam: On pot, the government is right to take it slowly
Without question, the Ontario government’s plan to regulate marijuana once the drug is legalized makes eminent sense. There’s no doubt that Canada is entering unchartered waters; caution should be the watchword. We are, for the first time, legalizing the recreational use of a street drug whose broader long-term impact on the population remains uncertain and the last thing we need is to plunge into this with careless abandon.
No, the provincial Liberals are not taking us back to the 1 -

Many seniors are becoming less reluctant to disclose their age
While much has been written about ageism – what it looks like, sounds like and feels like – it seems that there has been less emphasis on what older adults themselves can do to address ageist attitudes and practices. One response may simply be “owning” your age.
Too often, seniors are reluctant to disclose their age for fear of being discounted or, in the case of the workplace, discriminated against in both overt and covert ways. They may believe that if employment recrui -
