Over the years the Taliban have cranked out various videos for recruiting and propaganda purposes. But a recently released video is catching the attention of some analysts.
The video features the usual imagery of ambushes and IEDs going off. But the Military Times newspaper points out that the first 10 minutes of the video features shots of Taliban fighters armed with U.S. weapons, optics and tactical gear and conducting

Derick Brassard pleased with shoulder surgery recovery
Derick Brassard likely won’t be rushed back from right shoulder surgery for the start of training camp next week, but the Ottawa Senators’ centre believes his recovery is ahead of schedule.
“I feel pretty good,” Brassard said after an informal workout with many of his teammates Tuesday. “It was a short summer. I had the surgery (for a torn labrum) a couple of weeks after the last game, so I was pretty busy with that in training. Now, I’m just excited to be bac -

Former Senator veterans Neil and Kelly await next move in hockey career
Chris Neil and Chris Kelly were thrilled by their first order of business Tuesday: helping get their youngsters off to school.
The two long-serving Ottawa Senators veterans then went to skate in the first week of September without something they’ve had seemingly forever: a contract.
“It’s the first time in 20 years, that once September rolls around, I don’t have a place to go to,” said Neil, who has scored 112 goals and 138 assists in 1,026 regular season games, all -
Breaking down Carleton and U of O's sexual violence prevention policies
In March 2o16, the Ontario government passed legislation that required universities to have policies to address sexual violence by January 2017.
For some institutions, it was a simple administrative exercise. For others, including Carleton University, it became a drawn-out and controversial process. Student and faculty groups at Carleton fought for acknowledgment that “rape culture” exists on campus. The term is a reference to “a culture in which dominant ideas, social practice -
Big hairy deal: Ottawa man wins second in world championship of facial hair
Ottawa’s Colin Geitzler, a.k.a. Snidely Wildstache, has always been a bit of a savant of facial fuzz.
At the age of 12, his mother had to beg him to shave his neck beard for school pictures. By the time he was 14, he had a full beard and moustache. For much of his teen years he rocked a goatee.
Geitzler had to hold back a little during a brief stint in the military. Then, in 2012, he grew a moustache for a Halloween party and kept it for Movember. Four years ago, he started competing inter -
Q&A: Do you need a water softener if you live in Ottawa?
We were peppered with questions following the tale of an Ottawa woman slapped with a $6,000 lien on her home to fulfill the contract on a water softener system sold by a door-to-door agent.
Patsy Miller was required to pay out the entire 120-month rental on the system, even though she sold the Barrhaven home after 17 months and no longer had any use for the softener. She felt deceived by the sales agent, who left the impression the city’s water is loaded with harmful contaminants. This, of -
University of Ottawa sees boost in world university ranking
While students are just returning to their studies, universities around the world have already received their report cards – with the University of Ottawa’s standings improved over last year.
According to the Times Higher Education (THE) World University rankings released Tuesday, uOttawa ranked in a band between 201 to 250 among 1,000 universities rated around the world. That’s a step up from the year before when it placed in the 251-300 range after it lost ground in its -

The temperature reached 30 C only six days this entire year
At first it didn’t seem like the worst of summers, once you got past record-setting rains in June and July. Then David Phillips dug deeper.
“If there was anything about this summer, it was just consistently poor,” he said Tuesday.
Phillips, Environment Canada’s senior climatologist, began by pulling up the numbers for weekends — and they are not pretty.
There have been 31 Saturdays, Sundays and holiday Mondays since June 1. They played out badly, like so:

Reevely: Morneau's corporate-tax tweaks will cost Ontario eventually
The Ontario government tried to get something for nothing by urging doctors to take advantage of a federal tax loophole, and now it’s biting us all.
As tends to happen, when governments try to get something for nothing.
Finance Minister Bill Morneau’s midsummer proposal to change tax treatments for some small businesses (a desperate snooze unless you run one) is worsening into a battle royale, with freaked-out MPs fretting about protests through the fall, Conservative finance critic -

Then they shift a steel beam with a mallet, run around a series of hydrants, drag a charged hose line and blast water at a target. The final test is dragging a man-sized dummy to safety.

Man faces charges after confrontation with Carleton University special constables
A 24-year-old man faces numerous charges after a suspect wearing a face mask and brandishing what appeared to be a weapon confronted two Carleton University special constables shortly before 4 a.m. Sunday.
A replica firearm was later located and seized in Brewer Park, across Bronson Avenue from the campus.
A Carleton University spokesman said students and staff were not endangered in the confrontation. However, one of the special constables sustained minor injuries.

Pot shop closes in west end, pops up at Parkdale Market
A marijuana shop that was robbed three times this summer has cleared out of its west-end building and opened up in a new spot near the Parkdale Market.
The CannaGreen dispensary on McEwen Avenue near the intersection of Richmond Road closed last week. Georges Aoun, who owns the nearby MacEwen gas bar and convenience store, said he’s glad the store is gone. “I tell you, it was a bad experience,” he said. “Oh my God, nothing but problems.”

Cohen: In Maine, what is a town to do when the lobsters leave?
VINALHAVEN, Maine – On the islands of coastal Maine, boys and girls mark the end of summer and their departure for the mainland by holding hands at the edge of the town pier and jumping into Penobscot Bay. It is a sweet seasonal ritual.
It is unlikely the kids have noticed that the ocean is warming. When they hit the water, they shriek and laugh, splashing around in the numbing cold. The temperature is 13 C.
Yet scientists think global warming in the Gulf of Maine is happening faster than -
