Ottawa’s firefighters union is putting the heat on municipal politicians to consider volunteering the city as a provincial “fire-medic” test site.
John Sobey, vice-president of the Ottawa Professional Fire Fighters Association, said the union has been meeting with council members over the summer to promote the provincial plan to test a fire-medic model in two municipalities.
According to Sobey, the union wants council to ultimately decide if Ottawa should be a willing city for

Ottawa and Gatineau police handed out some back-to-school speeding tickets on Friday.
Kids return to school next week, and on Friday morning Const. Phil Kane and another officer from the Ottawa police traffic unit ticketed 15 drivers for speeding in a 40 km/h school zone along Spratt Road.
“When we were writing up tickets, people were still flying by,” said Kane, who was positioned near one of the schools in the area for an hour.

Gym trainer opens doors to disadvantaged, hopes others will open hearts
Sometimes a story sparks a surge.
Our profile of Ryan Armitage, who trains physically challenged adults at the Jewish Community Centre (JCC), changed his life and is changing the lives of others.
Since the story was published three weeks ago, Armitage has been swamped with requests to work with others facing hurdles just to get to a gym, let alone work out. Global National interviewed him for one of their “Everyday Hero” TV segments. He has been asked to speak in public about t -

Welcoming party greets father and son, 9, as they complete bike ride for autism
Nine-year-old James Potvin was already something of a celebrity by the time he rolled into Mooney’s Bay to the cheers of a welcoming party, with fire and police officials, and local politicians among the supporters cheering him to the finish line.
James and his father, Chris Potvin, struck out from their Whitby home last Saturday, hoping to complete the 400-plus-kilometre journey along a network of trails before reaching Ottawa, where young James had set his sights on visiting the mas -

Moodie LRT station won't have park and ride because there's no room
West-end commuters won’t be able to ditch their cars at the future Moodie LRT station and ride the rails to downtown Ottawa.
There simply isn’t enough room near the station to build a park-and-ride facility, according to a report on the Stage 2 transit expansion.
Council had asked staff to see if a park and ride could be built at Moodie station, which will become one of the western terminuses of the Confederation Line LRT in 2023.

Dying art of conversation
Re: We’re living in lonely bubbles – and it’s bad for our health, Aug. 29
I so agree with Melanie Sabo as the art of conversation is vanishing. No matter where I go, grocery store, bank or in some cases, church, people just choke up when I say hello or good morning. What is wrong with you people? What happened along the way?
To me a lot of the problem is cellphones, as people are obsessed with them. Even at a ball game, I see people staring at them or -

Editorial: Confronting racism and white supremacy
To punch or not to punch? That is the question.
Or, at least, it seems to be, in the whirlpool (cesspool?) of online debate over how to confront neo-Nazis and white supremacists. Is it excusable to meet ideas premised upon violence with fists and batons?
In a civilized society, of course not. Violence begets violence, no matter how theoretically satisfying it might be. In an Ottawa courtroom on Thursday, though, the other way of confronting and countering extremism was on di -

15 Canadian Stories: Viola Desmond, reluctant social activist
On a November evening in 1946, Viola Desmond was dragged from a Nova Scotia movie theatre when wouldn’t be moved to a balcony seat, the designated area for blacks. On Claude Ranger, the great Canadian jazz drummer who simply disappeared (Book review)
Claude Ranger: Canadian Jazz Legend
Mark MillerSelf-publishedIf music journalists overuse any word to the point of triteness, it’s “legend.” From now on, that label should be reserved for musicians who measure up to its meaning as did Claude Ranger.
It doesn’t get more legendary than the life that veteran Canadian jazz journalist Mark Miller documents in his new biography of Ranger, which is succinctly but appropriately titled Canadian Jazz Legend.

Gormley: The fall of Chris Alexander
It is unkind to kick someone when they’re down, as failed Conservative party leadership contender, disgraced snitch-line peddler and hapless alt-right band conductor Chris Alexander certainly is; but what is one to do when they kick themselves, determinedly and with great gusto, only to accuse you of committing bodily assault?
