Prime minister applauds front-line workers dealing with Phoenix pay problems
MONCTON, N.B. — The prime minister thanked public servants Wednesday for the work they’ve done for months to help federal employees affected by the government’s problem-plagued pay system.
Justin Trudeau met directly with employees at the federal pay centre in Miramichi, N.B., the epicentre of complaints about the Phoenix system.
Trudeau was inside one of the centre’s facilities in the city for just over an hour, but said nothing to reporters when he left.

$200K for Ottawa police to carry opioid overdose medication
Ottawa police will spend $200,000 to outfit nearly half of their officers with naloxone kits this year — a cost that police chiefs in Ontario want the province to cover.
On Tuesday, the provincial government announced an additional $222 million worth of funding to fight the opioid crisis. The largest chunk of that money will go towards long-term help for addicts. An additional $70 million will go towards support programs for chronic opioid users. Another $15 million will go towards trainin -
'I'm going to miss my best friend': Ottawa crash victim remembered
Shannon MacPherson grew up in the city, but she was a country girl at heart.
“Her very first time hunting, she shot a deer the first day within the first hour, showing all the men around what she was made of,” said her mother, Suzanne Jansen.
On Monday morning, the 22-year-old was driving back to Ottawa from visiting a friend in White Lake when she was involved in a fatal, single-vehicle collision. Her car was found in a ditch an hour’s drive west of O -

Canadian high schools welcoming more international students, boards say
TORONTO — Public high schools across the country are welcoming a growing number of international students in an effort to build valuable relationships and, in some cases, boost revenue.
Though international students make up only a small fraction of high schoolers, administrators in Ontario and British Columbia say they’ve seen a spike in recent years, with some school boards reporting their ranks have doubled.
The Toronto District School Board, which has one of the largest such -
Salvation Army consultant predicts millions infused into Vanier economy
Relocating the Salvation Army’s shelter and social services to Vanier would infuse at least $15 million annually into the community’s economy and create hundreds of spinoff jobs, according to an analysis obtained by the Citizen.
The Salvation Army hired Shore-Tanner and Associates to study the potential impact of a social services complex on Vanier as the organization moves ahead with a plan to build a $53-million “community hub” at 333 Montreal Rd.

'Atmosphere's better' as Redblacks seek a third straight victory
Winning two straight football games may not seem like such a big deal.
But when you’re losing game after game — the Ottawa Redblacks had been on the wrong end of the score six of their first eight games, with another ending in a tie — you’ll take any spark you can get to pump up the positivity.
In Montreal for a game Thursday night, the Redblacks somehow have a chance to take over top spot in the CFL East with a victory.
“We’ve always believed in ourselves, bu -
Eligible Ontario homeowners to get smart thermostats under new program
TORONTO — Eligible Ontario households will be able to get smart thermostats for free on a first-come, first-served basis under a new government program.
Environment Minister Chris Ballard announced Wednesday that $377 million in proceeds from Ontario’s cap-and-trade auctions this year will be used to establish a Green Ontario Fund. That not-for-profit provincial agency will oversee programs and rebates for homes and businesses to reduce energy costs.
Part of that will be the GreenON -
Redblacks need to tighten up against Als, who had 500 yards of offence in Week 5
The old bend, don’t break theory worked OK for the Ottawa Redblacks the last time they played the Montreal Alouettes.
A win is a win, right?
They probably shouldn’t count on the same thing happening Thursday night in Montreal.
In Week 5, in a 24-19 win, the Redblacks gave up more than 500 yards of offence, 452 of those from the arm of QB Darian Durant. The key for them was turnovers — Montreal threw two interceptions, fumbled twice and gave up the ball once on downs. Ottawa, on -

Redblacks offence finding its identity halfway through season, co-ordinator says
Through the first half of the CFL regular season, the Ottawa Redblacks were a model of inconsistency. There was plenty of good, but too much bad … and when the bad happened, it was crippling. The past two weeks have been better, though far from perfect.
The offence is always an easy target for nitpickers. The playcalling, the quarterback decisions, it’s all been put under the magnifying glass in the favourite pastime of critics: Armchair Quarterbacking 101. While the results have bee -

Glavin: There's a wide world outside of America's macabre spectacle
It’s morbid fascination, and it’s perfectly understandable. The implosion of political and cultural order in Donald Trump’s America, its teetering constitutional integrity, the marching Nazis, the cable news shout-shows, the tragicomic delirium paralyzing even the most venerable of the Ivy League universities – it’s a macabre spectacle. It’s hard to take your eyes off it. But for the truly tectonic shifts shuddering the world and Canada’s place in it, yo -

Reevely: Ontario students' math scores keep slipping, but a little more slowly
Three years after the Ontario government decided to take young students’ poor math skills seriously, provincial tests show they’re still getting worse.
If there’s good news in the latest findings from the Education Quality and Accountability Office, released Wednesday it’s that the decline has slowed. Maybe the Education Ministry’s assault on bad math is beginning to work. If so, it’s only beginning — and there’s reason to doubt that’s w -

Cloutier: Ottawa 2017 was a resounding success
I am the co-chair of Ottawa 2017 and disappointed to read Paul Dewar’s op-ed of Aug. 11.
He writes disdainfully about some of the events that were hosted as part of Ottawa 2017 celebrations. It is regrettable that Dewar was so dismissive to the thousands of volunteers and hard work Ottawa 2017 has put into this year-long celebration. His comments betray a lack of understanding of the importance of the tourism industry for workers and businesses in Ottawa.

Fall construction season shouldn't produce traffic bottlenecks, city says
Road work, building developments and LRT construction shouldn’t severely tie up traffic this fall, the city says.
