Long-term care homes are “allowed to do whatever they want, for the most part,” when it comes to staffing, says the head of an association that’s pushing for standardized staffing and training rules.
Miranda Ferrier, president of the 30,000-strong Ontario Personal Support Worker Association, says that not only is there no standard, enforced staffing ratio for long-term care homes in the province, but that it is possible for workers fired for incompetence or abuse at one home to

Police search for 'armed and dangerous' shootout suspect
Police are searching for a man they consider armed and dangerous following a late-night weekend shootout between rival gunmen firing from their cars near Algonquin College’s Woodroffe campus.
Police said they received “numerous” emergency calls reporting the shootout around 2:25 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 26. A spray of bullets left around 40 shell casings littering the intersection of Woodroffe Avenue and Navaho Drive.
Investigators were still on scene when a 25-year-old man checked -

Reevely: Ontario knows $222M to fight opioid crisis only the beginning
Ontario will spend an extra $222 million over three years to fight opioid addictions and overdoses, Health Minister Eric Hoskins announced Tuesday, with the single biggest chunk of the money going to long-term help for addicts.
That tells us something about where the fight against the latest drug scourge is going. If we can curb the overdoses and deaths that are at record levels now, if we can get past the crisis, cleaning up will be the work of a lifetime.

Court allows enforcement on city hookah ban
The city can keep enforcing a new hookah ban while waiting for a legal challenge of the bylaw, a court has ruled.
Lebanese Palace and its owner Brian Mahmoud asked the court for an emergency injunction, claiming big financial losses because of the bylaw banning water pipes in establishments.
The court decided Tuesday that the city’s interest in public health outweighed the financial concerns of Lebanese Palace.
The bylaw came into effect last Dec. 1.

Today's letters: Witless city plan – and a bad plan for nukes!
Solution for city lawn woes
Re: There just has to be a better plan than paving city hall lawn to save on upkeep, Aug. 26
If you do the math as quoted in David Reevely’s article about paving the lawn at city hall, at $450,000 to $500,000 to pave versus $21,500 each year to re-sod, that’s about 22 years worth of re-sodding versus paving.
After, or before, 22 years you will need to repave, given the current traffic in the area, hence savings = $0. Plus, you have created a sterile and un -
Baetz: Standing up for female scientists and researchers
At science meetings, women need to grab the mic – and not let go.
As the director of the Ottawa Institute of Systems Biology at uOttawa and as past-president of the Canadian Society for Molecular Biosciences, I get a lot of emails asking me to attend or help advertise science conferences.
Most of these emails end up in my delete file.
Why? I am no longer going to promote, sponsor or attend meetings that do not have a significant number of female speakers.

Not fair for neighbourhood to have injection tent in its park, Mayor Watson says
A Lowertown park shouldn’t be the site of a pop-up supervised injection tent, Mayor Jim Watson said Tuesday, but it’s not clear if the city is willing to pull up its stakes if the organizers don’t move the health service to the only licensed facility.
“My hope is they’ll be reasonable, work in a collaborative fashion with the Sandy Hill Community Health Centre that has the legal authority to operate the secure injection site,” Watson said in the heart of the B -

I never imagined writing something like this. American by birth, but now also a Canadian citizen, I’ve always regarded the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki as a stain on my birth nation’s honour. Info crusader fighting Ottawa's LRT contractor for more inspection reports
Ken Rubin wants to know what’s going on beneath the surface.
But the Ottawa access-to-information expert is hitting one roadblock after the next as he tries to get access to records showing problems that have arisen during the construction of the city’s largest ever infrastructure project, the Confederation Line LRT.
His battle underscores the level of secrecy, or confidentiality, that’s accompanied the building of city’s $2.1-billion light-rail line., due in part to the -
