Son charged with second-degree murder after elderly woman found dead in Sandy Hill
An elderly woman is dead and her son is charged with second-degree murder after police responded to a “disturbance” on Range Road in Sandy Hill early Friday morning — the city’s 11th homicide of 2017.
Police confirmed Friday afternoon the death was a homicide after spending most of the day describing it as “suspicious.”
They were summoned to an apartment building at 85 Range Rd., at the intersection of Templeton Street, after a call to police around 5:30 a.m. -

Thunderstorm warning issued, but fingers crossed for a sunny Sunday
Guess what?
Environment Canada issued a thunderstorm warning Friday for the capital region. Yes, again.
But we can pin our hopes on Sunday — the only day without a risk of rain until late next week, according to the latest from Environment Canada.
Friday’s forecast is showers — no kidding — with the risk of a thunderstorm (surprise!). Fog patches should burn off on the way to a high of 25 C that will feel more like 34 because of the humidity.
The showers should end Friday -

Hundreds in Ottawa plan to rally against racism at American embassy Tuesday
Hundreds of Ottawans are already rallying to join an anti-racism protest set for Tuesday at the American embassy.
By Friday afternoon, more than 750 people indicated on Facebook that they were going and more than 3,100 were interested in the noon event on Sussex Drive.
It’s billed as a peaceful protest against white supremacy and racism in solidarity with people who were harmed by “neo-Nazi” demonstrators, including a young woman who died after being mowed down by a car, in Cha -
Former LPGA stars from Canada offer Henderson some advice
The Canadian Pacific Women’s Open is not like any other LPGA Tour event for Canadian players. Never was under any previous banner, either.
Not every Open is equal for every Canadian player, though. They all matter, but those contested at or near home come with even higher expectations.
Therefore, Canadian Golf Hall of Fame inductees Sandra Post and Jocelyne Bourassa would be quite pleased if folks from the national capital region could give Brooke Henderson some personal space next week at -

Evans: The Nazi next door — make no mistake, white supremacists live among us
We ask ourselves this question each time we are confronted with an event as troubling as the one this past week in Virginia: What is it about far-right ideology that motivates young men to imagine life through the prism of violence?
The appeal of white supremacism is not new. While many of us were reminded by the death of Ernst Zundel that Canada has had its own dalliance with far-right activism, white pride organizations have a long history on this continent. Long before Hitler’s rise to -
Gurski: Radicalization is all about people
Elizabeth Moore, the subject of a news story in Friday’s Citizen, was once the “pretty public face” of one of Canada’s nastier white supremacist organizations, Heritage Front.
She joined it in high school before doubts started to set in, and she left after only a few years. She began to speak out publicly against the Front and eventually married a Jewish man, the very ethnicity/faith that her former “colleagues” hated so much.
In her own interpretation of why -
Editorial: Madmen diplomacy
This week’s searing failure of leadership on the part of U.S. President Donald Trump after the brazen neo-Nazi display of muscle in Charlottesville, Virginia prompts a spate of worrying questions. One of which is: Does Canada have the relationship right with this U.S. administration?
Media reports of a “friendship” between Justin Trudeau’s principal secretary, Gerry Butts, and Trump’s now ousted alt-right adviser Steve Bannon raised brief speculation that we might b -
Five hurt as balcony collapses on Gatineau site
Five people were injured, at least one of them seriously, when scaffolding and a balcony collapsed on a Gatineau construction site Friday morning.
Police said they were called to the site at 12 Horizon St., in the city’s Plateau neighbourhood, at about 9 a.m.
A balcony on an upper floor of the condo site started to sag, then collapsed. Four workers went tumbling about 10 metres to the ground, police said.
One of the workers apparently had time to jump inside the third floor unit, but -
Science of summer: Good news for baby loons
Our Science of Summer series continues as the August days become shorter. Today Tom Spears looks at a potential risk for baby birds born late in the summer.
This summer has been torture for loons, as a huge crop of biting flies drove adults off their nests across the northern U.S. states and southern Canada.
Parents abandoned their eggs in large numbers, often returning a week or two later to lay new eggs when the flies had gone. Many had babies that hatched very late in the season — in mi -

Dieppe at 75: Remembering the Canadian chaplain who earned a Victoria Cross
Seventy-five years ago, as the main Canadian assault force fought its way onto the beaches of Dieppe under blistering German machine gunfire, a determined chaplain was with them.
For months after the ill-fated raid, the unnamed chaplain was known only as “Padre X.”
Canadian soldiers who survived the fiasco told stories about the mysterious padre’s courage that day: how he delivered first-aid and morphine to dozens of injured soldiers; how he repeatedly exposed himself to heavy -

Gormley: Fascism is here – the first step is to tell it to get out
The president of the United States has been asked to unequivocally condemn the neo-Nazis who are tearing his country apart; he’s declined. The Speaker of the House has been asked to unequivocally condemn the neo-Nazi sympathizer who is destroying the Republican party; he’s declined as well.
Perhaps we should not be so surprised then, that when world leaders are asked to condemn the fascist who leads the country that purports to lead the world, they too take a hard pass.

Staying small: Legault keeps building on family legacy
Go big or go home? More like stay small and build homes.
At least that’s the way it’s done by Legault Builders, founded by the late Lucien Legault in 1976 and now run by his son Luc Legault. (Legault explained that his father was a homebuilder since 1949 — hence the tag “since 1949” on the company website — but started this particular company a little more than 40 years ago.)
Legault prides itself on being a small builder, producing only a handful of homes eac -

Most Canadians watched with shock and repulsion as events unfolded in Charlottesville, Va.
But was our reaction, in some corners, a little smug?
