How Canada can boost democracy in Venezuela
Civil war is a possibility in Venezuela, but things have changed, at least politically, since the illegitimate and unconstitutional Constituent Assembly was “elected” (this is an overstatement) on July 30. There is a new “normal” in which all political actors are trying to find their place, including the opposition, represented under the coalition umbrella called Mesa de la Unidad Democrática (MUD).
This new “normalcy” has not prevented the regime from -

Welcome, Matt … Albright back early, steps into O-Line spot
HAMILTON — It’s not Matt Albright’s first CFL start Friday against the Ticats, but being out there on a football field, at right guard, is something he wasn’t sure was going to happen in 2017.
After injuring his knee in a preseason win over Hamilton, Albright will get his first start of the season, replacing Nolan MacMillan, who is on the one-game injured list.
“I’d never had any knee problems,” said Albright. “So I didn’t know what it felt l -

Ottawa's Heart Institute wait times longest in the province
With eight months to go until a long-awaited expansion is complete, cardiac surgery wait times at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute are the longest in Ontario — more than triple the provincial average in the case of elective bypass surgery.
A patient undergoing elective bypass surgery at the Heart Institute waits an average of 95.7 days, according to recent figures from Health Quality Ontario, compared to an average wait of 27.4 days province-wide and significantly lower at som -
Brockville police veteran emerges from a dark addiction
BROCKVILLE — For Staff-Sgt. Todd Bertrend, Jan. 10, 2017, was the “worst day of my life.”
That was the day the veteran Brockville police officer was arrested for buying 124 pills of Oxycocet from a woman on a city street. But, Bertrend says, “There’s a blessing in all of it because, if (the arrest) didn’t happen, I don’t think I’d be alive.
“Yes, it was the worst day of my life and I’m thinking, ‘This is the end of every -

We must resolve supply management issue
Re: Milking supply management, Aug. 11
As one who experienced the benefits of supply management when it was established in the 1970s, I now see its downside.
Many European farmers, unable to access the lucrative Canadian dairy market, have sold their properties and emigrated to Cana -
The 'LRT litter': Kitten 'crisis' hits even city's light-rail project
Half-a-dozen scraps of fluff might just be the tiny mascots of Ottawa’s massive LRT project but they’re definitely emblems, however adorable, of a population of stray and feral cats that’s gone off the rails, advocates say. -
Harris: Time for an honest discussion of torture and Guantanamo
The fact that torture occurred in Guantanamo Bay is not news. Not only did former president Barack Obama state it bluntly as “we tortured some people,” even former vice-president Dick Cheney implied it in his “dark side” quote justifying some forms of torture. International law, however, is explicit in it. The International Convention Against Torture makes clear that any statement extracted as the product of torture cannot be used except as proof that the torture occurred -

Adam: Decriminalizing drugs would be insane
The hare-brained idea from Toronto that the country should consider decriminalizing or legalizing illicit drugs because current policy has failed is not just “crazy,” it is insane.
It would be laughable if the issue weren’t so deadly serious.
The worst of it is that Ottawa’s medical officer of health, Dr. Isra Levy, supports this, saying Ottawa Public Health backs “new evidence-based approaches” on fighting drug addiction, including decriminalization. Also on -

Lessons from Ottawa’s own neo-Nazi riot
It was a cool evening in Ottawa on May 29. The weather, however did nothing to cool the fury of a white supremacist hate rock concert held that evening in the downtown area.
RAHOWA, or “Racial Holy War” banged out a set of racist, anti-semitic hard rock sounds that whipped the crowd of a couple hundred, mostly young skinheads and Nazi wannabees, into a frenzy.
They heard racist lyrics like: “These boots are made for stompin; and that’s just what they’ll do; and one -

Gatineau police teach speedy new driver expensive lesson
The 19-year-old Gatineau man who was clocked at nearly 100 km/h over the speed limit was a fast driver, but a slow learner.
Stopped by police around 3 a.m. Thursday for driving 166 km/h in a 70 km/h zone on Boulevard de La Vérendrye West, the young driver should have come clean.
But he tried giving a false name. This didn’t work out so well. He is now charged with identity fraud, a criminal offence.
Once police sorted out his real name they noticed something else: The young man -
