Two men seen fleeing the scene after fire in Orléans home
Residents of Belcourt Boulevard in Orléans heard what sounded like an explosion on their street Monday and rushed to the aid of a person screaming. They thought they’d find an injured neighbour, but instead came across two unknown men fleeing the scene of a house fire in a car.
“I love my neighbours, I don’t have a problem with nobody or (know) why this happened to me,” said Yehia Akl, 60, who owns the 1466 Belcourt Blvd. home.

Ontario energy minister says hydro talks with Quebec still underway
TORONTO Ontario is negotiating a possible agreement to buy electricity from Quebec, but the government is disputing a published report that it is preparing to sign a deal for enough electricity to power a city the size of Ottawa.
La Presse reported Tuesday that it obtained a copy of a draft, 20-year deal that says Ontario would buy eight terawatt hours per year from Quebec — about six per cent of Ontario’s consumption — whether the electricity is consumed or not.

Arnprior doctor, hospital sued in $5-million malpractice claim
When Ray Nicholas noticed a bump on his stomach, he went to see his family doctor and was advised it was likely a hernia, and that there was no need for treatment.
A month later, in July 2015, he returned to the doctor, complaining of pain. He says he was told to keep rubbing and pushing it in to alleviate the discomfort.
No medication prescribed, no referral to a specialist.
A month after that, Nicholas needed life-saving surgery.
The details of how Nicholas ended up on the brink of death -

Authorities seize dog shown in video being hit by woman on Toronto subway train
TORONTO Authorities in Toronto have seized a dog that police say was seen in an online video being hit by its owner while on a subway train.
The Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals took the dog after executing a search warrant on Monday, OSPCA spokeswoman Alison Cross said Tuesday, noting that charges were pending in the case.
“This is a concerning video that we wanted to have an opportunity to investigate,” Cross said.

Many Canadians aren’t taking their prescriptions as prescribed
When preventing or overcoming an illness, medication is often a needed step in improving the quality of someone’s life and sometimes even saving it. However, the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists reports that, after six months, only half of Canadians continue to take their medications as prescribed.
“The statistics on medication adherence are alarming,” says Mary Kelly, Chief Pharmacy Officer with Rexall Pharmacy Group Ltd. “Unfortunately, there are still too many -

Air travellers need a strong public champion
With great interest, I read about the recent push for an Airline Travellers’ Bill of Rights. While not doubting the desirability of such an initiative, I point out that the issue of air travellers’ rights is nothing new.
Back in 1999-2000, faced with the merger of Canadian Airlines and Air Canada and public concern about how the newly enlarged Air Canada would deal with its customers, Parliament, by all-party agreement, created the very successful position of Air Travel Complaints Co -

Milking NAFTA: Supply management on shaky ground
Some have claimed that supply management was established as a social contract between farmers and consumers. Our heavily criticized quota regime to support the dairy, egg and poultry industries in Canada was set up decades ago to protect strategic agricultural sectors by implementing high tariffs on imports. Farmers produce what we need and import little from abroad – simple.
There is nothing like it in the Northern Hemisphere – at least not anymore, since Europe got rid of its syste -

Recreational weed – who should set the rules?
Marijuana for recreational use will soon become legal under the federal Liberal government’s Bill C-45, but the discussion of how to best regulate what many suspect will be an enormous industry is still ongoing.
