First human case of West Nile virus found in Ottawa
Ottawa Public Health has confirmed the first human case of West Nile virus (WNV) in Ottawa.
The virus has been found in the northern house mosquito, an insect that likes to live and breed around humans, and one that has been discovered in urbanized areas of Ottawa.
Ottawa Public Health said it has a proactive plan to deal with WNV through weekly surveillance and man-made standing water sites located on city property, such as ditches and stormwater management ponds.

Military uniforms welcome in Ottawa pride parade — unlike police
Capital Pride says Canadian Forces members are invited to wear their uniforms to its annual festival and parade in Ottawa — unlike the city’s police officers.
“Capital Pride welcomes all members of the Canadian Forces to participate in our events and walk in the parade,” festival organizers said in an official statement issued Friday by spokeswoman Tammy Dopson.
Asked why Canadian military uniforms will be welcomed when Ottawa police uniforms will not, Dopson said: &ldquo -
WWE's reigning heavyweight champion, Jinder Mahal, has a maple leafed-themed secret
Like most wrestling superstars, the WWE’s newest heavyweight champion isn’t exactly the man he’s portrayed to be on television.
Dubbed the “Modern Day Maharaja,” Jinder Mahal, who is said to carry the hopes and dreams of 1.3 billion people in India on his shoulders, is, in fact, a proud Canadian.
His on-screen persona is a little like a modern-day Iron Sheik, who only seems to be able to wins matches with interference from his henchmen. But, in reality, Mahal is act -

Politics matters: Bracing for the NAFTA fight
Parliament Hill was absorbed by the scandal that was Anthony Scaramucci early in the week, with even the most focused policymakers wondering how their best-laid plans on NAFTA could possibly deliver, given the chaos engulfing the White House.
Even with the resignations of three key political figures over the past few days – Newfoundland’s finance minister Cathy Bennett, Ontario environment minister Glen Murray and former B.C. premier Christy Clark – Canadian politics looked pla -

Drug overdoses spike in June as city's opioid crisis deepens
The number of drug overdose victims who required hospital treatment spiked in June to record levels as the city’s opioid crisis continued to gather pace.
Statistics released by Ottawa Public Health show that 135 people were taken to local emergency departments because of drug overdoses during four weeks in June — more than in any other four-week period in the past two-and-a-half years.
The final week of June saw 42 people taken to hospital with potentially life-threatenin -

Reevely: Ontario's economy pushes ahead, but manufacturing left behind
July was a good month for employment in Ontario in general, and yet another cruddy one for manufacturing.
“The economy has legs. It’s always nice to talk about good months when they come,” said Brad Duguid, the minister of economic development, giving the customary remarks after the monthly numbers came out Friday. Ontario added 26,000 jobs in July, according to Statistics Canada, and most of those jobs were full-time.
“It’s only fair now to acknowledge that this Li -

Obituary: Crazy Kitchen co-creator John Arnold designed Ottawa museums, homes and even a bridge
When Canada wanted a standout pavilion for Expo 67, and a modern new science museum for Centennial Year, it handed a lot of the design work to a young man just reaching his thirties. It was no gamble. Obit: Crazy Kitchen co-creator John Arnold designed Ottawa museums

It was no gamble. By the early 1960s, John Arnold had already built a reputation as a designer with artistic flair who also understood the nuts and bolts of construction and electronics.

Thunderstorm watch for capital region; tornado watches from Kingston to Belleville
Throw a severe thunderstorm watch onto what was already forecast to be a hot and sticky Friday with showers taking us into what may be a downright wet weekend.
Environment Canada warned Friday that conditions are ripe this afternoon and evening for “dangerous” thunderstorms that could cause torrential rain and damaging wind gusts and hail.
The weather advisory sounds downright apocalyptic, warning that severe thunderstorms can cause tornadoes, large hail can break windows, dent cars -

Meet the public service's new top tech boss, who's not afraid to speak his mind
Since taking the reins of the government’s top technology job four months ago, Alex Benay has been the public service’s biggest booster — and one of its loudest critics.

Recently, he applauded the launch of a federal Digital Youth Advisory Council, which will pick a number of Canadian teens who work with Treasury Board Secretariat to provide input on governme -

Review: Cirque's Volta transcends mundane inspirations, blossoms into dazzling display
Volta, by Cirque du SoleilThe big top at Zibi Site, 2 Laurier St., Gatineau (Hull sector)Until Aug. 27Reviewed Thursday night
The opening moments of Volta, the latest Cirque du Soleil production, evoke an all-too-mundane situation. If I’d wanted to get caught up in the tribulations of a TV game show’s competition and watch a batch of characters glued to their cellphones, I could have stayed home.
A “grey” character performs during the dress rehearsal for Cirque du Soleil -
Councillors, don't spend our money on swag
Government waste is inevitable, but taxpayers ought to expect their elected officials to do everything they can to curtail it. Instead, some Ottawa city councillors are spending our money on useless swag.
A Citizen freedom-of-information request shows that councillors are buying hockey pucks, blankets, ice scrapers, playing cards, Frisbees, travel mugs, hand sanitizers, mint tins, aprons, balloons, mini hockey sticks, insulated cooler bags, shirts, tote bags, magnets and tents. It’s partic -
Gormley: Arms sales to the Saudis are wrong. What doesn't Canada get?
Canada, having allowed the sale of weapons to a regime that habitually abuses human rights, is shocked and appalled that this very regime has used Canadian-sold weapons to abuse human rights.
Representatives of not one but two Canadian governments – a previous Conservative government that in its steadfast avarice struck a $15-billion arms deal with the devil, and a current Liberal government that in its flippant cynicism signed off on it – are, with great conviction, taking turns pro -
BC wildfires present challenges for U.S. and allied military pilots on exercise
I recently returned from Washington State which is seeing first hand some of the effects from the wildfires now raging in British Columbia. The skies are hazy and the smoke from the fires gives the appearance of almost like smog. “This phenomenon is caused by smoke from wildfires in Alaska as well as northern and central Canada,” according to the National Weather Service website. “The smoke from these fires rises high into the atmosphere and is driven south across the Upper Mid -

Even Russia has high-speed train travel. Why don't we?
In Russia, at least the trains run on time.
Actually, at least the Russians have trains.
As the U.S. Congress passes more sanctions against Russia and the world gears up for another war of words between the two former super-powers, it is worth examining what the conditions inside Russia are actually like. Particularly because, for Canadians, there are a whole set of surprises.
In a journey from south to north of Russia, it is clear that this is not 1989. Russia is not a shambling post-Communist -
