Two seriously injured after car crashes into tree near Queensway on-ramp
Firefighters had to free the injured driver of a vehicle after it went out of control on the eastbound on-ramp to Highway 417 at Nicholas Street early Thursday and struck a tree.
A passenger in the car was also injured.
Paramedics were on the scene first and notified the fire department of the crash at 3:25 a.m.
Fire crews had to remove the driver’s side door to extricate the driver, who was freed at 3:43 a.m. and taken to the hospital.
Paramedics said that the driver suffered extensive in -

Q&A: Key questions about Salvation Army's Vanier 'mega-shelter' proposal
Fierce debate has swirled in Vanier and beyond ever since the Salvation Army announced plans in late June to build a new multi-purpose facility — which opponents call a “mega-shelter” — on Montreal Road.
The plan calls for a 9,600-square-metre hub that includes an emergency shelter, day programs, medical care, addiction services and administrative space. It would replace the Concorde Motel beside the current Salvation Army thrift store. A house on Ste. Anne Avenue would b -
Bass wagers that the Redblacks will prevail over his former teammates
Linebacker Khalil Bass didn’t say what the stakes were, but he’s got a bet with former teammate Chris Randle on the outcome of Friday’s game between the Ottawa Redblacks and Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
Bass, with 181 tackles in his two years in Winnipeg, is now the enemy. You can bet there will be tongues wagging when he lines up against several former teammates and friends.
“For me, it’s just another ballgame. We only have one win right now, so I can’t think reall -

One-win Redblacks 'know it's go time' as they prepare to face underdog Bombers
Funny enough, the team with just one win six games into the CFL season is favoured by two-and-a-half points over the team with three wins in five games.
Yes, the Ottawa Redblacks, returning to the field after a 10-day break between games (the latest setback came by a 27-24 score in Toronto), are the pick of oddsmakers to knock off Winnipeg on Friday night at TD Place. The reality is the Redblacks have sprinkled plenty of good things into their six games, losing four by a collective total of 10 p -

Air Transat, explain that Ottawa airport episode
Air Transat is the latest airline with a big public relations problem, during a year in which the aviation industry has not exactly covered itself in glory with consumers.
Recall the video of a Kentucky doctor being dragged off a United Airlines flight in April. Or the surprise cancellation of some passenger tickets in the spring by Air Canada, thanks to an over-active fraud-detection system. And let’s not start on the problems travellers now face routinely: lost baggage, last-minute chang -

Let's think quite differently about Canada Day in future
On July 1, 2017, 150 relics of Canada’s first centennial descended on Ottawa. They came from the East, West, North and South – paddling 36-ft. freighter canoes.
Not surprisingly, they were old. Fred Stark from Sechelt, B.C. was 80 and had driven across the country to join us at Kingston. He knew some Salish paddling songs and taught them to us as we paddled along through the monsoon summer which had descended on the Ottawa Valley.

Toughen your rules about parking in bike lanes, mayor tells Canada Post
Canada Post needs to specifically instruct its employees to not stop their delivery trucks in Ottawa’s bike lanes, Mayor Jim Watson says in a new letter to the corporation’s chief executive.

A helicopter will arrive in southeastern Alberta Friday to pluck a one-tonne dinosaur skull off a rocky hillside and send it to Ottawa.
After two years of field work, paleontologist Jordan Mallon will watch the skull leave the hill where it spent tens of millions of years in a matter of minutes.
The helicopter flight is unusual, but necessary.
