Redblacks like CFL shift to one challenge a game
While it doesn’t solve a problem of sub-par officiating, the Ottawa Redblacks are giving a big thumbs up to a CFL video review system rule change introduced Wednesday that limits coaches to one challenge per game.
It certainly should speed up the games.
Prior to this change, each team had two challenges a game and a third was earned if a coach was successful with their first two challenges.
A team will still need to have a timeout to initiate a challenge, and, if their challenge is not suc -

Reevely: Ex-Ottawa cop probing police beating of black teen in Durham
Not in dispute is that an off-duty Toronto police officer and his brother chased a black teenager down a residential street in Whitby last December and then beat him so badly the young man, Dafonte Miller, will lose an eye.
Figuring out how the Durham police came to arrest Miller and why nobody reported the beating to the Special Investigations Unit, has fallen to a high-flying former Ottawa cop who’s talked about as a future chief here.
This is a career-defining moment for Deputy Chief Ud -
Second-year Redblacks lineman hopes to get back in after struggling against Argos
Professional football players are often their own worst critics, and Ottawa Redblacks offensive lineman Jason Lauzon-Seguin admits he didn’t play well last week against Toronto.
Lining up against former Redblacks defensive lineman Shawn Lemon, Lauzon-Seguin was beaten a few times. Possibly as a result of that, he might take a seat while Jake Silas steps into the right tackle position Friday night at TD Place against Winnipeg.
“It wasn’t my best,” said Lauzon-Seguin, who t -
Redblacks hope to get injured players back soon
The Ottawa Redblacks hope their injury list becomes much shorter in the next week or two.
A couple of weeks ago, fullback Anthony Gosselin was a late scratch, just before the Redblacks played the Montreal Alouettes.
Redblacks GM Marcel Desjardins explained on Wednesday: “Game day against Montreal, he got sick — throwing up and whatnot. So it was, ‘OK, he ate something.’ Even going into the next game, the Toronto game, he wasn’t getting any better. Eventually, he was -

Ottawa biologist meets wolf — at 1 a.m. in his tent
Ottawa’s Paul Sokoloff was doing a peaceful survey of plants in the High Arctic when a wolf stuck its head into his tent.
So Sokoloff did the only thing that made sense. He grabbed his camera.
Sokoloff is a plant biologist at the Canadian Museum of Nature and has just returned from a three-week expedition charting the plants of several Arctic sites. He was at Lake Hazen on Ellesmere Island when he woke up in the bright Arctic night and saw an Arctic wolf poking its head through his tent do -

Things are looking to be a little less wonderful over the next few days.

“Local rainfall amounts of 50 mm in an hour or less are possible in localities that are affec -
The strange cases of travelling cats, chihuahuas, and top-secret goats
The Eastern Ontario man who was moving to China was frantic, making call after call to Canadian government offices to rescue his two cats from Chinese quarantine.
They arrived last August without the proper paperwork, and Chinese officials told him that after a week in quarantine they might be given back to him — or they might be killed.
The man had proof of rabies shots and an “international health certificate” from a vet. But he didn’t have an export certificate from th -

Glavin: If Trudeau is the free world's best hope, we're doomed
In all the eye-rolling and the uproar attending to the glamour treatment lavished upon Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on the cover of this month’s Rolling Stone magazine, there’s one thing that has been conspicuously overlooked in each of the obsessively forensic deconstructions of the gushing 7,000-word profile that accompanies the magazine’s stylish portraiture. There is nothing in it that even comes close to answering the question posed in its headline: “Is he the free -
Woman suspected of robbing john turns herself in
A woman accused of robbing a man who hired her as an escort has turned herself in to police and been charged.
Police say a john recently contacted an escort known as “Anastasia” online, and arranged to meet her at a home on Draper Avenue. He said he paid up front.
But later the woman claimed she hadn’t been paid. She made a call and another man showed up at the home. The customer was beaten up and robbed, police say, though he didn’t suffer serious injuries.

Antiques: A.J. Casson silk screen print celebrates Canada
Q I bought this old picture at a yard sale many years ago. I think it’s a lithograph of Canada’s Coat of Arms, but I’m not sure. The bottom of the crest is signed “A.J. CASSON.” Could it be the same one of the Group of Seven? The print measures 59 by 47 cm (23 x 18.5 inches).
