It was in the late 1970s that my mother and father took us kids to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, so we could see the famous U.S. Civil War battlefield.
Dad was a well-briefed tour guide and needed to consult no pamphlet as he took his children to Little Round Top, stood us at Cemetery Ridge to look out of the never-ending field that Picket and his southerners walked into death and history, and we were taken to the spot where Lincoln, once the guns had fallen silent, had delivered the Gettysburg Addr

After some rest, Redblacks hit reset button
It’s not like they’ve been hold-your-nose stinky in the first six games of the Canadian Football League season, but the Ottawa Redblacks need to find a way to turn almosts into victories after producing just one win a third of the way through the schedule.
Maybe a bit of a break was what they needed following their latest setback, 27-24 against the Argonauts at Toronto’s BMO Field on July 24. It was an all-too-familiar scenario, with the Redblacks doing enough good things to wi -

Here's the swag city councillors bought with their office budgets
People love free stuff and city council members know it.
Many politicians break out their corporate credit cards and go shopping for anything on which they can slap their names.
Through an access-to-information request, the Citizen received invoices for branded merchandise purchased from political office budgets in 2016. It’s a one-year snapshot of what goodies councillors are buying to sprinkle around their wards.

Hospital administrator says lawsuit destroyed his life, fires back in counterclaim
The former director of engineering and operations at The Ottawa Hospital says he has been unfairly vilified and unable to find other work as a result of allegations against him in a lawsuit launched by the hospital.
As a result of the publicity surrounding the “baseless allegations,” Brock Marshall’s life “has been destroyed and his prior sterling reputation has been demolished,” according to his counterclaim that seeks $4.5 million in damages.

Science of Summer: Ottawa's favourite gulls are actually newcomers
Summer’s at its height, and Postmedia’s Tom Spears looks at the science of summer — the way we connect with the all-too-short season we revere.
Ring-billed gulls — we mostly just call them seagulls — are everywhere in Ottawa, but most people don’t realize they are newcomers.
There had been herring gulls here before the 1940s, but the ring-bills first arrived around 1945. A man named Douglas Savile of the Department of Agriculture had been noticing these gulls -

Reevely: Glen Murray quits Wynne government for Pembina Institute think tank
Glen Murray, Ontario’s minister of environment and climate change, is quitting to head an environmental think tank based in Alberta.
Murray is a longtime ally of Premier Kathleen Wynne’s, a former leadership rival who dropped out and endorsed her in 2013 and the minister trusted with the delicate and complicated job of devising the Liberals’ signature plan to cut the province’s greenhouse-gas emissions.
He’s proud to have had that responsibility, he said in a statem -

Police have identified a man who drowned while fishing on Lac Ramsay in Gatineau Park on Saturday morning.

The other man made it to shore. Police divers later found Larose’s body.

Please do things to my body, please!
An extravagance for me, I once spent an entire day at an esthetics spa. Grateful muscles were kneaded. Rude body hair was waxed. The epidermis on my back, arms and legs was scrubbed with a granular cleanser, rinsed and moisturized. A facialist soothed and refurbished my face. Eyebrow colour was enhanced with dye. Hands and feet were soaked in tepid, sudsy water, exfoliated, softened within cocoons of warm wax, and nails were lacquered. I’m pretty sure the “complimentary” -

All true. And yet, now and again, there are flashes of inspiration. Hundreds of thousands of people came out to see the duelling La Machine robots over the weekend. (Awesome though it was, Sunday night’s finale featured poorly managed crowd control – we -
