With 14 days between games smack in the middle of the United Soccer League season, Ottawa Fury FC team members might have been tempted to take a few days off and scatter back to their respective hometowns or at least enjoy a few days away from TD Place.
Not so.
Instead, they used the opportunity to work on what has kept them from moving up the USL table: putting the ball in the net.
“The last week, a lot of the sessions were designed around getting as many goals as possible,” midfiel

Rainy summer a 'disaster' for farmers, Lanark Federation of Agriculture says
Last year it was a drought. This year it was a deluge. And farmers are fearing for their crops for a second year in a row.
Heavy rains have delayed planting, which means yields will be lower. For many farmers, it has been too wet to harvest hay. That will affect the entire local agricultural ecosystem. Beef farmers and dairy farmers who can’t produce enough hay will have to buy supplemental feed. Riding stables face scrounging for hay to feed horses.
“In the front of our house, there -
Scanlan: McKeown rails against CFL as former teammates die of brain disease
Anyone who has played organized sport looks back on old team pictures and reminisces.
Bob McKeown sees those old photos and weeps for the dead and the dying.
McKeown, an award-winning reporter for the CBC’s Fifth Estate and a former Ottawa Rough Riders lineman, is beyond concerned for the CFL players of his era who are plagued with or have died from degenerative brain disease.
“I did a list from the five teams I played for,” says McKeown, a Rider from 1971-75. “I have com -
Science of Summer: A trek through the forest is no walk in the park
Summer’s at its height, and the Citizen’s Tom Spears looks at the science of summer — the way we connect with the all-too-short season we revere.
It’s great to follow a trail through Gatineau Park that Canadian taxpayers allow staff to create and maintain.
Nice, too, to ride a mountain bike that dominates the wilderness.
But what about the real wilderness, the forest where there are no paths that meet federal park safety standards? What did our ancestors face in the fores -

Conservation body looks for new project after Navan rejects wetland
The conservation authority that was denied building an artificial wetland in Navan is looking for another Ottawa community to enhance.
The South Nation Conservation Authority is working with the city to find a candidate site.
“We plan to select an area that would benefit from enhancements to biodiversity while improving water quality in a community with local support,” according to John Mesman, a spokesman for the conservation authority.

Reevely: The fight over the proposed Vanier shelter was inevitable
Since we force the Salvation Army to act like a pushy private developer so it can build a new homeless shelter, it’s doing the only sensible thing by fighting hard to get that shelter built in Vanier.
The story of the 350-bed shelter and health-care complex the Salvation Army wants to build just off Montreal Road follows familiar lines.
The way it usually goes, a private developer wants to make money by constructing a condo tower or something, demolishing smaller houses or closing existing -

Behind the scenes at the Canadian War Museum – Improvised Explosive Devices
As noted in a recent posting, I received a behind-the-scenes look at the Canadian War Museum’s storage facilities/vaults as specialists there prepare for reworking exhibit areas at the museum.

Chamberfest preview: Cris Derksen's eclectic music fits in many stylistic boxes
Cris Derksen Trio
When: Tuesday, Aug. 1, 10 p.m.
Where: La Nouvelle Scène, 333 King Edward Ave.
Tickets: chamberfest.com
Toronto-based cellist Cris Derksen considers it “super-lucky” that her accident earlier this month happened as it did.
Before she was to play at the Winnipeg Folk Festival in early July, a piece of metal fell from a construction site 23 floors up and hit her hand. Derksen says that, fortunately, the metal struck her right hand, which bows her instrument -
Ottawa shouldn't be drawn to the dark side
The world’s great cities know a thing or two about turning on the lights at night. Think Rome and the Colosseum, or London’s Westminster, or the Parthenon looming imposingly above Athens after dusk. Think Toronto and the CN Tower, artfully illuminated in different hues on certain evenings. And they don’t call Paris the “City of Lights” for no reason.

Why robots are the way of the future, especially for the elderly
SAN FRANCISCO — Paro closes its watery eyes, tilts its head and emits a soft cry. The robotic harp seal — the world’s best-known therapeutic robot — is the creation of Japanese scientist Takanori Shibata, but its voice is made in Canada. Shibata recorded the baby harp seal, which became the voice of Paro, on Quebec’s Magdalen Islands.
“It’s a Canadian seal,” said Shibata, who showed off his cuddly creation at the world’s largest gat -

Gormley: The world loves Trudeau, but does Trudeau love the world?
The world loves Justin Trudeau, and why shouldn’t it?
He’s handsome. He’s kind. He loves children, whimsical clothing and constitutional rights. And then there’s his touch.
So goes the erotic letter to Penthouse that, through an unfortunate clerical error, ended up mislabelled as a political profile in Rolling Stone magazine this week, anyway. It was a strange read. Strange, but not entirely wrong.

Give Thomas D'Arcy McGee's statue the honour it deserves
Over the years, many Citizen articles have been written about the assassination of Thomas D’Arcy McGee, including the recent retelling of the tale by Bruce Deachman. Yet there is part of the story that has yet to be told, except in a few old books, about the bizarre and incredible fate of McGee’s statue, and the omission by the federal government of any official honours.
As it stands, McGee’s statue appears to be of less importance than the one of Sir Galahad on Wellington Stre -

Renovating's last frontier – tackling that garage many of us can't even wedge a car inside
One day, shortly after the Pringles finished their garage makeover, Ruth wondered where her husband was hiding.

We are live from downtown Ottawa where Long-Ma is awakening.
The giant machines — Long Ma, the horse-dragon, and Kumo, the spider — are astonishing, a combined 80 tonnes of clanking, articulated steel, escaping steam and window-rattling roars.
Kumo can stretch 20 meters long and 13 metres high and takes more than a dozen people to operate.
La Machine is a French street theatre company founded by François Delarozière, an engineer by training. Guy Laflamme, executiv -

Pearson: Looking back at my year as part of Up With People, two decades later
I have finally made it to Denver. After almost two years of planning and preparations, I am at the “Mile High City.” My host parents are very nice. Tomorrow we are going to the rodeo in Cheyenne, Wyoming. It’s kind of funny — not even a day in the state and we are already going out of state. The goodbyes last night and this morning were much easier than I thought they would be. I guess I miss everyone back home but that’s only because I haven’t gotten settled -
