Christopher Vandette wins Quebec Amateur men's golf championship
Christopher Vandette shot an even-par 72 on Thursday and came from behind to win the Quebec Amateur men’s golf championship at the Eagle Creek Golf Course in Dunrobin.
Playing in the final group as overnight leader Marc-Olivier Plasse, Vandette, a Beaconsfield resident playing out of the Summerlea club in suburban Montreal, made up the three-shot deficit he had at the start of the day and won by two strokes with a four-round total of 7-under-par 281.
It was his second provincial golf champ -

Scanlan: The only girl in the boys' Provincials delivers an A-level fastball

St. Louis, 13, also happens to be the only girl participating in the 2017 Major Provincials — an elite level tournament — in Perth this week. St. Louis and her fellow South Ottawa Blues have a 2-1 record heading into Friday’s action. That loss, to Port Arthur, was South Ottawa’s fir -
Union calls long-term care violence 'tragic symptom of a care system in crisis'
The union representing nurses and long-term care workers at Ottawa’s 17 city-run facilities says “many tragic stories” could be avoided if Ontario increased its funding.

CUPE referenced the murders of eight elderly residents in Woodsto -

Reevely: Des Rosiers staffer who called cop a murderer won't be fired, MPP says
Nathalie Des Rosiers on Thursday blamed a staffer for tweeting in her name that an Ottawa police officer is a murderer, let the premier’s office speak for her because she was too busy, then found time for a bunch of interviews.
“I’ve had better days,” the Ottawa-Vanier MPP conceded.
The mess began Wednesday night, coinciding with a vigil in memory of Ashton Dickson, the star football player shot to death one month ago after an argument at the Mingle Room bar on Rideau Str -
Ottawa police to convene civilian panel to review handling of sex-assault cases
The Ottawa police will convene a civilian panel this fall to review the way sexual assault cases have been investigated, with an eye to improving police procedures.
The so-called “Philadelphia model” of oversight is considered to have improved the way police handle sexual assault complaints in Philadelphia, where similar panels have conducted reviews since 2000.
“We’re embracing this internally. It might make us better,” said Ottawa police Insp. Jamie Dunlop. -

Repatriate Diab, reform our extradition law
Canadians have recently become increasingly aware of the plight of Hassan Diab. Diab, a former Ottawa university professor, was extradited from Canada to France in 2014. He has since been held in custody without trial, on the basis of what can increasingly only be called trumped-up charges involving the bombing of a Paris synagogue in 1980. Mitel to spend US$430M net to acquire Shoretel in second try
Give Mitel CEO Rich McBee credit for patience.
Nearly three years ago he made a play for California-based rival ShoreTel but withdrew Mitel’s $8.50-per-share offer when ShoreTel’s directors demanded more.

Marketplace: Add personality to your kitchen
In many homes, the kitchen takes priority. It’s where we prepare and cook meals for ourselves, our children, extended family members and guests. It’s where experimentation, learning and fun happen all at once, especially when working together to make a new dish. In some homes, the kitchen houses an island with bar stools so members of the family can gather and enjoy each other’s company.
Coincidentally, the kitchen is one of the largest investments in our home. We renovate them -

Man wanted in double slaying has struggled with alcohol addiction
When Alam Gabriel Buoc — the youngest of nine — arrived from Sudan as a boy in 1996, his parents figured his troubles in life would be limited to learning English, or worse, braving the Ottawa winters.
And those were his only problems until he turned 18 and found fire in a bottle. He held a few honest jobs at a restaurant and in retail but when he got drunk, which was often, he turned to crime, and soon found himself making a living as a cocaine trafficker who had a thing for handgun
