SAN FRANCISCO — Could Alzheimer’s disease be prevented one day with a vaccine?
That is the tantalizing promise of a body of scientific research that points to microbes, including the ubiquitous herpes virus, as a possible cause of the disease.
The link between microbes and Alzheimer’s could pave the way for eventual treatments or a cure, something that continues to elude the medical world at a time when there is growing concern about skyrocketing rates of the disease.

Families mourn sons slain in Monday's shootings
The slain men in Monday’s string of west-end shootings were neighbours and friends whose families had known each other for years.
Abdulrahman Al-Shammari, 26, and Dirie Olol, 27, lived just four houses away from each other.
Police began investigating their slayings and the attempted homicide of Abdulrahman’s brother, Talal Al-Shammari, 31, early Monday morning when Talal showed up shot in the neck, shoulder and pinky finger at the Queensway Carleton Hospital. From there, police -

Record rainfall floods North Gower area homes, fields, farms
North Gower firefighter Joe McLaughlin had been up most of the night helping area residents to protect their homes from the record rain that hit the valley on Monday, but he never expected to wake up the next morning to a more dire situation than those he had left.
“It’s two feet deep in the backyard and this morning (my basement) was about four feet deep with the pumps I was able to get from work … I’m down probably about a foot now,” said McLaughlin.

Capital Voices: 'It's important that you know who you are, where you're from and how you got here'
To mark Canada’s sesquicentennial, the Citizen’s Bruce Deachman met and photographed 150 people in the Ottawa area, encouraging them to tell their stories that, combined, painted an intimate portrait of the region and the people who live, work and play here. The series, which was published daily leading up to Canada Day, was called Capital Voices. It continues, today and beyond, on a somewhat less rigorously defined schedule.

Record rainfall swamps south end as city endures July downpours
Ottawa’s wettest July day on record Monday pushed the city toward a record for wettest month ever, and — from Osgoode to Manotick to North Gower — rain hammered south-end residents, flooding basements and turning streets into swimming holes.
Doug Wilde, who lives on Church Street in North Gower, watched as the rain became so heavy around 6 p.m. that his neighbour’s drainage ditch filled with water and flooded his front lawn before spilling over to cover the road.

City reveals art concepts for LRT stations, total cost to exceed $7M
The city has revealed concepts for $7.3-million worth of art pieces that will be installed in the 13 Confederation Line LRT stations, showcasing the works of local talent and internationally renowned artists.
A municipal public art policy compels the city to contribute one per cent of hard construction costs to a public art account. With a $2.1-billion budget to build the first phase of LRT, the city has a big pot of money from which to fund artwork along the 12.5-kilometre line.

Reevely: Intra-conservative battle in Carleton spills into the open
The Progressive Conservative candidate in the new Carleton riding will lose and would be a bad MPP even if she won the next election, Ottawa’s most prominent provincial Tory said in a private email Tuesday.
Lisa MacLeod has represented Nepean-Carleton in the Ontario legislature since 2006 but the riding is being split at the next election. MacLeod is running in the northern suburban section, called Nepean. After one of their now-routine ugly nomination squabbles, the Tories nominated young -
Editorial: Boycott if you want – but don't expect it to work
If you channel your political views through your wallet, what good will it do?
There have been recent calls for a boycott of Sears Canada, as it undergoes restructuring while cutting some 2,900 jobs. Many Canadians don’t like the way this is happening, and say they won’t buy Sears’ products. The strategy of refusing to purchase goods and services to make a point has targeted many companies – and governments – over the years, with varying degrees of success.

Security yes, but don’t treat people like cattle

Kingston man pulls knife on off-duty police after road-rage incident
A traffic light in Kingston flashed green as a 30-year-old man stepped in front of a car at the intersection of Bayridge and Lincoln drives.
The vehicle didn’t hit him but the angry pedestrian started punching the vehicle’s front passenger side window.
Two off-duty police officers who witnessed the Friday night incident approached, telling the suspect to calm down.

Kingston police apologize to flood-trapped driver verbally abused by officer
Kingston police have apologized to an elderly driver who was verbally abused by a police officer when the confused man drove past a barricade and into floodwaters on Monday.
In a news release, police said they were made aware of a social media video showing the elderly driver stalled in deep water at the city’s Gardiners Road underpass.
A voice can be heard of “a male berating and using profane comments towards the driver,” the release said. The video has since been taken offli -
Redblacks face tough questions after another disappointing game
In the 11 days before the Ottawa Redblacks play another football game, they need to figure out who and what they are.
Now a third of the way into their CFL season, the Redblacks have just a win and a tie in six games. Maybe that’s not a huge deal in an East Division where the Redblacks, with an 8-9-1 regular-season record, won the Grey Cup a year ago. But after coming off a ridiculous string of four games in 17 days, three in 11, the Redblacks will get a few off days to reflect on what has -

Cohen: How an Ontario village raised money to honour Lester B. Pearson
KAGAWONG, Ontario – On Manitoulin Island, where the legacy of Lester Bowles Pearson shines nearly a half-century after he was its member of Parliament, they have found a touching way to honour him in a way the Government of Canada has not.
Undeterred by an act of historical identity theft that removed Pearson from a national historic site in Ottawa, the Old Mill Heritage Centre is mounting an ambitious exhibition of its own, drawn largely from his personal artifacts.

House Works: Backup power for energy independence
Slowly but surely, the Canadian electrical system is changing. On the generation side of the equation there’s more solar and wind power coming on stream across the country. But small equipment that boosts electricity independence for end users is changing, too.
I’m always surprised how many people have a deep interest in making their own electricity at a household level. I’m sure the attraction is about more than just economics, too. While big electricity bills are scary, there -

Contact names for unit supporting injured military personnel disappear from DND website but why?
The Joint Personnel Support Unit is an umbrella unit for 24 Integrated Personnel Support Centres across Canada and was created to offer programs to support and enable mentally and physically injured troops to resume their military careers or more commonly, to make a gradual transition into the civilian world with sellable skills.
It has been facing numerous problems over the years, with a shortage of staff and a revolving door for commanding officers.

Weather: Forecaster's fingers crossed for 'wettest month ever'
David Phillips of Environment Canada is basically a nice guy who sympathizes with us during this wet, awful July. But he still wants more rain. Just a little more.
“I will be cheering for another 4.7 mm of rain to fall between midnight (Monday night) and the end of July 31 to make this the wettest month ever in Ottawa’s weather history,” he wrote Tuesday morning, en route to his dentist.
