On the morning of June 5, Joshua Stangby watched the birth of his first child, daughter Anaya Tehani, on FaceTime.
The Ottawa Redblacks receiver will finally see her in person for the first time next Tuesday, and to say he’s excited … well, it’s much more than that.
“Ever since she was born, I’ve been itching to see her,” said Stangby, who will be with his Canadian Football League teammates for Monday’s game against the Argonauts in Toronto, then

Kingston police investigating theft of Flipper the special needs kitten
A kitten with special needs was a day away from finding her forever home in June.
And then, on June 26, Flipper, a three-and-a-half-month-old short hair, was stolen from the Kingston Humane Society.
“She was approved to be adopted on June 27,” said Connie Ball, the executive director for the shelter.
After staff checked for Flipper and couldn’t find her, the kitten was reported missing to police.
Ball said Flipper had a “unique style of wal -

Dzingel signs two-year contract with Senators
After avoiding salary arbitration and signing Ryan Dzingel to a two-year contract extension worth $3.6 million U.S., the Ottawa Senators have a full house of forwards.
At this point, Senators general manager Pierre Dorion could stick with the four lines full of proven playoff experience or he could try to make a trade to add a veteran defenceman to offset the loss of Marc Methot in the National Hockey League expansion draft earlier this summer.
“Having a lot of good players is a good thing -
A little bit new, a little bit old for Senators signee Nate Thompson
On the ice, Nate Thompson’s familiarity and previous success with Ottawa Senators head coach Guy Boucher should make for a relatively easy transition to his new squad.
Off the ice, though, Thompson acknowledges he might face a little “culture shock” in adjusting to a Canadian climate after spending eight seasons in Tampa Bay and Anaheim.
“That was the exciting part about signing here,” said Thompson, who signed a two-year contract worth $3.3 million U.S. as a free a -

Hydro One should get its new American subsidiary out of the coal-power business, Premier Kathleen Wynne said Friday.
The former public utility, in which the Ontario government is now a big but minority shareholder, will pick up a stake in a large coal plant once its $6.4-billion purchase of an electricity and natural-gas company based in Washington state goes through.

Politics matters: Transparency, trade and taxation
The week in politics was supposed to be all about kids and playing in the park. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau popped up in disparate corners of the country to highlight Canada 150 free passes to national parks and to celebrate — with cake and all the trimmings — the first anniversary of the Canada Child Benefit, his government’s multi-billion-dollar attempt to deal with income inequality.
But the questions that followed him were more about the prime minister’s accountabil -

Redblacks trying to get "full tank of gas" before facing Argos
Wearing their floppy white safari/sun hats, with no helmets or pads, the Ottawa Redblacks looked very relaxed during Friday’s practice, their first day back on the field after a 24-19 win Wednesday over Montreal.
While it may have been a bit of a physical break heading into Monday’s game in Toronto (in what will be their third game in 11 days), the Redblacks are dialed in – a win over the Argos would crazily enough put them into first place in the CFL East.
“We do our mee -

On the morning of June 5, Joshua Stangby watched the birth of his first child – daughter Anaya Tehani – on FaceTime.

Editorial: Salvation for all
A proposal by the Salvation Army to build a $50-million emergency shelter and social services hub in Vanier has rapidly spiralled into bitter name-calling. That’s unfortunate. Both the social problems Sally Ann seeks to address, and the concerns of a lively, improving neighbourhood, are too important to be mired in unseemly politicking.
To review: Everyone wants a solution to the public safety issues in the ByWard Market, including around the Booth Centre emergency shelter on George Street -

Review: Theatre in the Bush enthralling in the dark
Canada Scene presents
Theatre in the Bush
Mackenzie King Estate, Gatineau Park
Reviewed Thursday, July 20
Theatre in the Bush usually happens on Brian Fidler’s 2 1/2-acre property outside Whitehorse, where it’s never very dark in the summer and there’s always a bonfire.
This weekend, the theatrical adventure takes place at the Mackenzie King Estate in Gatineau Park, where night falls quickly but open fires are strictly forbidden by the National Capital Commission, which maintai -

In praise of science 'superclusters'
Astronomers refer to superclusters as a group of smaller galaxy clusters that can be as a big as 200,000,000 light-years across and are “the largest structures in the universe.”
But there’s also a more down-to-earth definition for the supercluster – as a global destination point for ideas, people and capital that will create jobs and drive economies of the future. Report after report has identified Canada’s challenge to close the innovation gap with other leading co -
Salvation Army proposal flouts the city's official plan – bigtime
The recent debate over the proposed Salvation Army shelter in Vanier has largely overlooked the reason the Salvation Army is even applying for rezoning: shelters are not within zoning allowances for traditional main streets, which Montreal Road is. Therefore, the conversation should not be focused on whether or not this belongs in Vanier, but whether it belongs on any traditional main street?
Downtowns get special treatment in terms of city of Ottawa zoning because main streets are recognized as -

Stephen Hough
When: Sunday, July 23, 7 p.m.
Where: Dominion-Chalmers United Church
Tickets: chamberfest.com
British piano virtuoso Stephen Hough confesses that he went through a bit of a rough patch during his adolescence.

Gormley: Trump's Russia problem only grows
Americans have good reason to ask whether their president and his closest political associates are criminals. But what makes the question so necessary ought to make the answer moot.
For the purposes of determining whether Donald Trump should remain in office, it doesn’t matter whether a crime was committed in his and his associates’ dealings with Russia. It’s damning enough that the question has to be raised.
“Has to be” is the key phrase here. The point is no -

Bourne: Artists and parents have some responsibility in Bluesfest mess
The relationship between Bluesfest and hip hop is being discussed heavily in the media and on social media.
The Citizen recently published an article in which the writers stated racist myths are behind the complaints about hip hop at Bluesfest.
The Ottawa Sun also published an opinion piece in which the writer stated the problem isn’t hip hop, but intoxicants and inexperienced festival goers.
The Citizen opinion piece is correct in highlighting a measure of prejudice by pointing out that t -

Log Homes: Beautiful and sustainable alternative to traditional houses
Homeowners Tony and Lea Bond had a vision of creating a beautiful countryside escape, featuring a large lot and a stunning log home.
The couple had fallen in love with log homes in 2010 after Tony’s project with Boys and Girls Club in Ottawa. Together, with the help of the Ottawa Senators Alumni, they’d raised enough money to build a log home called Camp Smitty, right on Mink Lake. They contracted Paul Kealey and Adam Tackaberry of Kealey Tackaberry Log Homes to build the two-storey -

Weather: Looks mostly good, but three days of crossed fingers coming up
Despite what the weather people were saying Thursday, with virtual promises of sunshine and warm temps, there may be a fly in the ointment Friday.
Three flies, in fact.
Upon further review, apparently, Environment Canada is now saying that Friday should be sunny in the morning, but a mixture of sun and cloud is expected this afternoon, bringing a 30-per-cent chance of showers this afternoon.
The temperature should be a relatively humidity free 29 C, but the UV index is expected to be 9 or very h
