Jaw broken in attack on OC Transpo bus from Bluesfest
A Barrhaven man is still recovering from a beating inflicted on an OC Transpo bus after the trouble-filled Bluesfest concert on July 13.
Adam Farsijani, 21, says he’s in constant pain from a broken jaw and a possible concussion suffered at about 11:30 p.m. on the No. 95 near Fallowfield station.
Video provided to the family by other passengers show two men wrestling and striking Farsijani as the trio stand in the rear aisle of the articulated bus. As he stands up from a bent, hog-tied posi -

Reevely: Windmill plant closes, as Ontario's Green Energy Act dies a painful, costly death
Siemens is closing its windmill-blade factory in Tillsonburg, kicking one of the struts out of the provincial Liberals’ plan to remake Ontario into a manufacturing centre for green-energy equipment.
So long, Green Energy Act. That was painful.
Not least for the 350 or so workers at the plant near London, most of whom are out of work immediately. Some will stay on for a few months to wind the operation up, but it’ll be fully shuttered in 2018, Siemens says. They’re just not sell -
Tip prompts new SQ search for missing Kitigan Zibi women
The Sûreté du Québec has resumed a full-scale search in the Maniwaki area this week for two young Indigenous women who went missing without a trace from their Kitigan Zibi homes in 2008.
When Maisy Odjick, then 16, and Shannon Alexander, 17, disappeared on Sept. 6, 2008, the teens left behind their wallets, purses, clothes and medication.
Maisy sent a friend a message on Facebook later that morning.
Since then, there have been no signs of the young women.

MacDougall: Tory MP Cheryl Gallant's anti-media rant part of a bizarre conservative malaise
The most polite thing one can say about Cheryl Gallant’s bizarre “Gallant News Network” video is that it’s no more bizarre than most of the things Cheryl Gallant says or does.
The six-term Conservative MP for Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke has a well-earned reputation as a wild card, and so a 10-minute, hostage-quality Facebook video hounding the “elite-stream” media over their coverage of the Omar Khadr settlement isn’t out of character.

A year after Abdi's death, some lessons learned
On July 24, 2016, Ottawa Police responded to a disturbance at the Bridgehead Café in Hintonburg, where complaints had been made about a man apparently groping at least one female customer. Witnesses say the man was pepper-sprayed, and police say he became “assaultive.” Aside from the fact that pepper spray is said to evoke psychological symptoms such as fear, anxiety and panic, it transpired that the man, Abdirahman Abdi, also had a history of mental illness, though he wa -

Denley: Councillors shirking duty with silence on long-term care homes
OK, it’s finally summer, but that doesn’t excuse Ottawa city hall’s lame response to the shocking video of a city long-term care worker punching a helpless 89-year-old resident.
One would have hoped that that incident alone would have galvanized councillors to say or do something, but the silence has been nearly complete. If not the video, how about city staff’s petty and vindictive decision to limit access given to the daughters of two residents, caregivers who have comm -

Glavin: China's campaign to purge Liu Xiaobo's name is disagraceful
It’s a pretty good sign that a regime is terrified of the people it purports to govern when state censors are obliged to outlaw references to Winnie the Pooh.
Because a lot of people have noticed an unflattering resemblance between the pudgy little bear of bedtime stories and supreme leader Xi Jinping, the Cyberspace Administration of China has been making itself busy this week blacking out any social media references to “Little Bear Winnie,” the bear’s Chinese name, and -
