As he battled rib and knee ailments in the pre-season, receiver/returner Daje Johnson knew he needed to heal and the Ottawa Redblacks would take another look at him.

Drownings up slightly over last year in Ontario
There is no specific cause for the uptick in drownings in Ontario this summer, says a national water safety organization that tracks such incidents.
According to Lifesaving Society, there have been 56 drownings in Ontario as of Monday, compared to 50 around the same time last year.
Ottawa’s latest drowning occurred Saturday when a young man was pulled unresponsive from the Ottawa River at Britannia Beach. Witnesses said the man was found floating near the outer buoys a -

It's not time for Redblacks to fire coach, bench QB or make big changes
Tear the team apart, fire the coach, bench the starting quarterback. Those are the most laughably ridiculous solutions some “fans” are calling for to fix what ails the Ottawa Redblacks.
With just a tie in four games, the Redblacks — who, might I add, are defending Grey Cup champions — are looking to get on the winning track against the Montreal Alouettes at home on Wednesday night.
That will be just five days after their previous game, a tough 23-21 loss at Edmonton&rsquo -

Worry about the future of the ByWard Market is behind one of the most welcome additions to Major’s Hill Park in a long time: André Schad’s hot-dog bistro, a month old and growing fast.
Tavern on the Hill has about 25 workers now and is growing about as quickly as Schad and his wife and partner Chantal Biro-Schad can hire. He figures they’ll need 10 more people to cover opening hours that span 12 hours or more a day, seven days a week.

Uber activates driver tip option in Ottawa
Uber drivers in Ottawa can now get tipped through the smartphone application.
The international ride-ordering company turned on the tipping option Monday for rides in the capital.
As Uber says, “Tipping is up to you; it’s completely optional, but always appreciated.”
The lack of a tipping option has irritated some local Uber drivers, even before the service became legal in Ottawa last year.
Still, one of the hallmarks of Uber was the absence of tipping. Customers didn’t h -

Yes, cyclists have to obey the rules too
It’s just a few seconds of YouTube footage, but it’s harrowing. The dashboard camera in Nick Fleury’s car captures the horrifying moment when a cyclist pedalling through a red light is smacked by a car at the intersection of Lyon Street and Laurier Avenue. The impact flings the bike clear across the intersection; its rider bounces off the car’s hood and, miraculously, rises to his feet.
The cyclist, it is believed, was not seriously injured, nor were the occupants of the -

Pageau avoids arbitration and signs three-year deal
The Ottawa Senators have avoided going to arbitration with centre Jean-Gabriel Pageau.
The Senators centre, who had a standout performance in the playoffs, agreed to a three-year, $9.3 million contract Monday with a cap hit of $3.1 million per-season.
Pageau, 24, finished with 12 goals and 21 assists for 33 points in 82 games last season, however, he had eight goals in the playoffs and was a pest to play against in a shutdown role.

Eru-Era's Ed Lister explains why it will be extra-funky at Irene's Pub this weekend
Ottawa trumpeter Ed Lister is a dynamo when it comes to creating bands and original music for those bands. He belongs to a dozen groups, his website says, and he seems to be perpetually composing for the groups that he leads.
Lister’s priority this week is his seven-piece funk band Eru-Era, which plays Friday and Saturday at Irene’s Pub on Bank Street. Above and beyond a usual gig, the shows will be recorded with the best music to be pressed on CDs for a planned fall release.
