The city’s former auditor general said he was surprised to learn his one-time lieutenant was fired from the office after his successor took over.
Alain Lalonde, who retired from the AG job at the beginning of 2014, declined to address the meat of the allegations in Raymond Kostuch’s lawsuit against the City of Ottawa, but he defended Kostuch’s work over the 10 years they worked together in the auditor’s office.

Editorial: Time to get started fixing long-term care is now
Eventually, many of us are going to need care and assistance, whether it’s help getting to the bathroom, eating or simply moving around in our day-to-day lives.
In 15 years, more than 900,000 Canadians will have dementia. Many of these people – many of us – will end up in long-term care homes. There are plenty of good reasons to improve long-term care for the elderly, but naked self-interest ought to make it a somewhat higher priority for Ontarians.
Over the past two week -
Marten Hartwell: An epic tale of Arctic survival
In December 1972, the eyes of the world were on Yellowknife.
More than a month after his mercy flight had disappeared into the barrens with three passengers aboard, pilot Marten Hartwell had been found alive. Hartwell, a 47-year-old immigrant who had grown up in wartime Germany and learned to fly as a teenaged glider pilot in the Luftwaffe, had survived 32 days in the wilderness. Both his legs were broken, the snow was a metre deep and the temperature at night dipped to -38 C.

Theatre review: Ben Caplan compelling in refugees' tale Old Stock
Old StockProduced by 2b theatre and the NACJuly 13-15, Azrieli Theatre, National Arts CentreReviewed Thursday
Old Stock, a new play by the acclaimed Ottawa-born playwright Hannah Moscovitch, is inspired by the story of her great-grandparents’ arrival in Canada as Jewish refugees from Romania more than 100 years ago.
She, musician Ben Caplan, director Christian Barry and Halifax’s 2b theatre company have created an extraordinary piece of theatre, telling the often dark tale with an en -

Segal tosses salad into his entrepreneurial mix with Mad Radish
For David Segal, salad is the new tea.
In 2008, when he was living in Montreal, the 36-year-old Ottawa native founded DavidsTea, which by the time Segal left the company last year had grown to become a publicly traded, $200-million retail business with roughly 200 North American locations.
On Friday, Segal was a blur of activity at the grand-opening hubbub of his new venture, a salad-centric, fast-casual eatery in downtown Ottawa at Albert and Metcalfe streets that’s called not DavidsSalad -
Complaining is crucial to functioning long-term care system, author says
Complaining about abuse and neglect of loved ones in long-term care is “the most caring thing” a family can do, says author Lise Cloutier-Steele. But people who make complaints should be prepared for retaliation.
It happened to the Ottawa author when her father was in an Ottawa long-term care home and she wrote about it to help other families going through similar experiences.
“The reality is that even though caregivers are well within their rights to report systemic abuse and -

Jonathan Pitre received important news Friday when doctors reported that his low white blood cell count is not the result of a failed engraftment as some feared.

Early this week, his white blood cell count plummeted to 0.4 — a normal white blood cell count ranges from 4 to 11 — an -
Of shipwrecks and sovereignty
Something dramatic is emerging from the Arctic ice and it is not just John Franklin’s recently discovered ships Erebus and Terror. The discovery of Franklin’s ships, lost searching for the Northwest Passage in 1845, has been overshadowed by dramatic revelations of archaeological skullduggery, political corruption, illegal searches, and at least one police investigation surrounding disputes between private searchers and archaeologists. Such squabbling has always marred -

Ottawa police issue warning about paving scam
Ottawa police are warning residents against rushing into deals with paving contractors who show up at the front door.
Last year, police received complaints from people who “hired” paving contractors to do inexpensive work on their lane, but did not sign any paperwork.
When the work was completed, residents reported that the contractors pressured them to pay a higher rate.
The organized fraud unit says any contractor work should come with a hard-copy contract.

Reid, Ifill, Gee: Racist myths at heart of Bluesfest criticism
If you think it’s time to eradicate hip hop from Bluesfest due to Thursday night’s crowd behaviour, there is a good chance you are being racist.
That doesn’t mean you are a racist, however it does mean that the racist tropes of Black criminality – and criminality of people of colour in general – are ones you accept as fact. But much of the conversation surrounding Thursday night’s Migos and Little Yachty shows play on racist tropes of how hip-hop music is the -

Reevely: Patrick Brown's time for on-the-job training is over
Ontario Tory leader Patrick Brown spent this week rolling out a set-piece announcement a day about things he’ll do if he can hold the Progressive Conservative party together long enough to win an election next year.

Bob MosesWhen: July 15, 9:30 p.m.Where: RBC Bluesfest, Black Sheep stage
By David Friend
Vancouver-raised Tom Howie and Jimmy Vallance are prone to amusedly reflecting on how they formed their duo Bob Moses by chance in a hardware store parking lot.
