Kristy's tower plan a tough swallow for neighbouring ward councillor
Development applications to build tall, densely populated buildings near future LRT stations are virtually slam dunks at city hall, but one councillor is challenging a property owner to “inspire” through the design of a tower on Richmond Road.
The owner of Kristy’s Restaurant on Tuesday will seek the planning committee’s permission for a 24-storey mixed-use complex at 809 Richmond Rd. The proposal is different from the original one filed last year, when the restauran -

Kristy's customers ponder restaurant's future
Although some of the details are lost to time, Abby Yuill can tell you the exact date and occasion of her first visit to Kristy’s Restaurant on Richmond Road. It was Feb. 7, 1998, when she and her mother, Janet Yuill, along with a handful of other moms and babies, gathered in the restaurant’s bright solarium to celebrate Abby’s first birthday, a party so new and exciting that Abby had cake icing under her fingernails before the first guests had even arrived.

The Zombies
When: July 11, 9 p.m.

Fifty years ago this summer, the Zombies went into Abbey Road Studios to record their second album, Odessey and Oracle. The young band broke up before it was released.
Without a promotional campaign or a tour to support the record, you’d think that would be the end of the story.
But instead of vanishing into the ether, one of the singles, Time of the Season, was discovered almost two years by North American radio stati -

Trucker crashed a rig swerving to avoid a family of ducks on Hwy. 401
He’s a hero to ducks everywhere, but the OPP is calling fowl with an $85 ticket after a trucker crashed his rig swerving to avoid a family of ducks on Hwy. 401 Monday morning.
The road was still down to one lane as of mid-Monday afternoon near where Hwy. 401 and Hwy. 416 meet east of Prescott and engine oil was spilled into the marsh, police said.
It was at about 9:40 a.m. when the 49-year-old man from Vineland, Ont., swerved his transport truck in the eastbound lanes, lost control, w -

Reevely: Councillors golf with developers to stop kids' drug overdoses
Unable to squeeze enough funding out of the city budget for two youth programs in his ward, Rideau-Goulbourn Coun. Scott Moffatt turned to the mainstay of politicians trying to raise money for good causes: a developer-sponsored golf tournament.
Scott Moffatt’s Golf4Youth Classic Presented by Caivan Communities was last Friday. Sixty-four golfers and a handful of silent-auction items helped clear about $15,000, he says.
The money from this tournament is for good and important causes: -
Family of five displaced in Herongate townhouse fire
Firefighters quickly upgraded a blaze in a Herongate townhouse to a second-alarm Monday to keep the flames from spreading.
A family of five, including three children, are displaced.
Crews were called to a bed on fire and blaring smoke alarms at 2870 Baycrest Drive at 12:44 p.m. There was no one inside the unit, where there was heavy smoke visible at the top of the house, one of six in a row.
So the incident commander called a second alarm fire as crews began an “aggressive” offensive -

Piché: Why a new Ottawa jail won't necessarily make things better
When Queen’s Park announced that a new 725-bed jail was coming to Ottawa, those advocating for diversion, decarceration and better living and working conditions at the local remand centre expressed concerns about the potential costs – both financial and human – and size of the proposed facility.
Some have asked whether it makes sense to build a new and bigger facility when more just and effective policy alternatives are underused at present. While there are also some who are co -
