Taylor Knox, Bluesville Stage, Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
Taylor Knox has been keeping some good company over the years.
He’s performed as a sideman in studio and onstage for the likes of Owen Pallett, Rich Aucoin, Luke Doucet, Hayden and Jason Collett, so it was only natural that when it came time to make his own record, he had the leverage to pull in a few favours.
“It is my debut full-length, which feels kinda funny to say because I’ve been playing music for so long,” said

Fury FC wary of developmental Toronto FC II squad
With just two wins in 16 games, a United Soccer League-low nine goals scored and a goal-differential of minus-17, rivalling the league’s worst, Toronto FC II represents something of an easy mark on any opponent’s schedule.
Just the same, even as it sits 15th and last in the USL’s Eastern Conference, Toronto FC II is still considered something of a success story as it prepares to play host to the playoff-contending Ottawa Fury FC at the Ontario Soccer Centre in Vaughan on S -
Paramedics win back no-response buffer
The City of Ottawa must reinstate a 30-minute window at the end of paramedics shifts when they don’t respond to calls, an arbitrator has ruled.
The city took away the end-of-shift buffer on March 3 to satisfy Ontario Ministry of Health investigators, who were probing complaints from border municipalities ticked off over sending ambulances into rural Ottawa to fill empty coverage areas without receiving compensation.
Ottawa’s updated deployment model came with two significant changes: -
Twenty-one arrests made in project targeting street-level drug trafficking
Ottawa police announced Friday that they had charged 21 people, including three youths, in a project related to street-level drug trafficking. Sold out? Nope, Redblacks tickets usually available until game time
True: The Ottawa Redblacks almost always sell out their home games, with a bit more than 24,500 fans on hand.
Also true: Almost always there are still good tickets available right until game time. Case in point, there were still more than 1,000 tickets left for Saturday night’s game against the Toronto Argonauts at TD Place stadium as of Friday.
The Redblacks are trying to get the message out: Even with the popularity of the Grey Cup champs, don’t assume there are no tickets left.

Redblacks give Roughriders castoff Jonathan Newsome a shot
A “difference in philosophy” landed the Ottawa Redblacks a player they think can chase opposing quarterbacks.
On Friday, the Redblacks announced the signing of defensive end Jonathan Newsome, who had been released by the Saskatchewan Roughriders earlier this week following a meeting with coaches, including head coach Chris Jones.
Newsome explained on Twitter that it was a “he say, she say” situation in Saskatchewan, then added that he didn’t play those games.

Jazzfest review: Quintet played stirring protest jazz
Ryan Keberle and CatharsisTD Ottawa Jazz FestivalSaturday night
The blues were played a lot at the 2017 TD Ottawa Jazz Festival, but no one did it better than Ryan Keberle and Catharsis.
To be clear, the New York trombonist and bandmates are not a blues band per se. They’re definitely jazzers, and eclectic, forward-thinking ones at that.
But that rendition of Billy Strayhorn’s slow, sultry Blues in Orbit that the band played Saturday night at La Nouvelle Scène? Just unbeatable -
Twenty-one arrests made in project targeting street-level trafficking
Ottawa police announced Friday that they had charged 21 people, including three youths, in a project related to street-level drug trafficking.
Project “FLURRY,” conducted by the service street crime unit, targeted street-level drug dealers operating in the ByWard Market area from the months of April to June.
“Many of those arrested are coming in to the downtown core to prey on some of the most vulnerable people in our community and profit on their addictions,” said -
Race walker Evan Dunfee: From nerdy kid to Canadian sports hero
Evan Dunfee has taken a rather bizarre route to his position as a compelling role model, making a loud point by repeatedly laughing at himself.
Dunfee, who became a household name in Canada last summer following his courageous and controversial fourth-place finish in the 50-kilometre race walk at the Rio Olympics — he was essentially hip-checked out of a bronze medal — hopes his story can inspire scores of children who are unsure where exactly they fit in.
“The thing I do when -
$46K shelled out for annual grass replacement at city hall
Contractors were at it again Friday replacing the damaged lawn at Ottawa City Hall, this time after the jazz festival pulled up stakes. They rolled out the fresh sod and a sprinkler fed water to the newly installed turf as taxpayers absorbed the cost.
Using access to information, the Citizen asked for grass replacement invoices on file between Jan. 1, 2012 (after the Rink of Dreams was built) and June 8, 2017, related to the Laurier Street side of city hall.
All the invoices add up to $46,202.59 -
Young Edmonton discus thrower Gabrielle Rains has Olympic dreams
When it Rains, it pours.
At least that’s the way it seems when talking about future Canadian Olympic hopes in discus.
Edmonton’s 18-year-old Gabrielle Rains set a Canadian Track and Field Championship record in the under-20 competition Friday, breaking her own mark with a throw of 51.60 metres.
“Long term, like a lot of kids here, the Olympics are the ultimate goal,” said Rains, whose busy summer schedule will now take her to Peru for the Pan-Am Under-20 competition and t -

Man charged with first-degree murder 17 years after girl's death
Seventeen years after a teenaged Algonquin girl was beaten to death in her bedroom, the Sûreté du Québec have arrested a man and charged him with first-degree murder.
Rosianna Poucachiche, 17, was killed in her family’s home on the Lac-Rapide reserve on Oct. 10, 2000.
The reserve is on the west side of the Cabonga Reservoir, and is part of the territory of the Algonquins of Barrière Lake. It is also known as Rapid Lake.
The suspect is now 33, but cannot be identi -
Availability of abortion pill in Quebec 'good news,' but questions remain, says clinic director
The director of an Outaouais women’s clinic has hailed the Quebec government’s announcement that the Mifegymiso abortion pill would be covered by the province’s health plan by this fall.
“There’s been a (court) judgement in the past saying that all abortions in Quebec have to be free — we were really hoping that it would be free to make sure that the judgement by the Superior Court would be respected,” said Patricia Larue, director of the Clini -

Dramatic truck flip on Hwy 417 leaves mashed potatoes, minor injuries
That’s a lot of hash browns.
A tractor-trailer flipped on the Highway 417 westbound offramp to Hunt Club Road Friday morning, sending a load of potatoes flying.
Thankfully the 50-year-old driver was able to get out of the truck on his own with minor injuries after the 10:12 a.m. crash, paramedics said.
Police called in the fire department to help with the large amount of debris and fluids that shut down the ramp for safety reasons.

Painter Tom Thomson honoured with music on centennial of his death
What is the sound of granite? Of jackpine? Of the sky on a bleak midwinter’s day?
Those are the questions Ottawa-area musician Terry Tufts and his Algonquin Ensemble have tried to answer in their suite Sonic Palette — Tom Thomson’s Voice Through Music 100 Years Later.
The ensemble — Tufts, his wife Kathryn Briggs on piano and bassist John Geggie — début the piece this weekend at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinburg, Ont., on the 100th anniversar -

Milnes: Addressing the two solitudes as we mark Canada's 150th
Let’s get something over with: An obvious gaping hole in my Canadian patriotism is the fact that I don’t, and never will, speak French. I can read it at, probably, a Grade 1 level but, at age 51, I’ve had to give up.
I am as Anglo as they come. And even the most ardent of past and present Quebec nationalists, sovereigntists and separatists – I am confident – will quietly smile when and if they hear or heard my attempts at speaking French, and agree with me.

After the flood, the noisy job of rebuilding a washed-out landscape
Word came suddenly in May to families living beside Bilberry Creek: Get out now, in case your house follows the backyard and slides into the creek.
Three families are still evacuated from the Orléans neighbourhood, and crews are working long hours to rebuild the washed-out land around the creek, hoping the families can move back in late August.
It’s a big job, not just replacing the soil but adding massive rocks and driving steel pilings deep into the ground for stability.

A palette in sound: Ottawa-area trio marks centennial of Tom Thomson's death
What is the sound of granite? Of jackpine? Of the sky on a bleak midwinter’s day? Those are the questions Ottawa-area musician Terry Tufts and his Algonquin Ensemble have tried to answer in their suite Sonic Palette — Tom Thomson’s Voice Through Music 100 Years Later. -

grannies ride for grannies
If you want something done in this country, ask a grandmother.
Stephen Lewis, educator and former politician, did this more than a decade ago and it resulted in a significant contribution to African grandmothers left with orphans from the AIDS crisis that continues to rage in Africa. Lewis, of course, was the United Nations special envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa from 2001-06.
The Stephen Lewis Foundation continues to support AIDS work in Africa, in part through the efforts of grandmothers in Canad -
Painter Tom Thomso honoured with music on centennial of his death
What is the sound of granite? Of jackpine? Of the sky on a bleak midwinter’s day?
Those are the questions Ottawa-area musician Terry Tufts and his Algonquin Ensemble have tried to answer in their suite Sonic Palette — Tom Thomson’s Voice Through Music 100 Years Later.
The ensemble — Tufts, his wife Kathryn Briggs on piano and bassist John Geggie — début the piece this weekend at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinburg, Ont., on the 100th anniversar -
Editorial: Pride and policing
Is Capital Pride wrong to ask that police not wear their uniforms if they join the big parade in August? Is the chief of police wrong to assert he plans to do just that? Yes, and yes. How did two groups that have previously walked together in a show of unity arrive at this petty level of bickering?
The saga is about tolerance, intolerance, use of force – and, sadly, identity politics.
For most of the public, the spat started the day before Canada Day, when organizers of Capital Pride annou -
Ottawa's Rideau High and the prom that almost didn't happen
Editor’s note: Citizen reporter Jacquie Miller and photographer Ashley Fraser joined the students and staff of Rideau High School in the days leading up to the graduation dinner and dance of the school’s final graduating class. The school board has decided the site will be closed. Determined to give the school and its students a proper sendoff, the community rallied to help put together a proper prom. This is their story.

Why was there no proper plan for Canada Day?
I was chair of a group of Ottawans who organized and ran the Great Canadian Birthday Party in 1976 (at the request of prime minister Pierre Trudeau), then Canada Day from 1977 to 1979 for the National Capital Region. This included events for a full week prior to July as well as the show on the Hill and fireworks. We had fewer than five paid workers and many thousands of volunteers.
Last week, I had family travel from as far away as Florida and Albany, New York who expected to enjoy Canada -

Ottawa, Gatineau continue to move in opposite directions in job market
When it comes to the job market, Ottawa and Gatineau have been moving in opposite directions.
While the capital region’s overall jobless rate climbed to 5.9 per cent in June from 5.7 per cent in May despite the addition of 2,000 net new jobs, all the bad stuff was happening on the Ottawa side of the river.
Here’s how Statistics Canada broke down the numbers on Friday. In Ottawa, the jobless rate jumped to 6.1 per cent in June from 5.8 per cent in May, reflecting the addition of 1,700 -

Adams: What my dying wife and I never knew about palliative care
In the four years I accompanied my wife Suzanne as she endured the diagnoses and treatment for breast cancer, the most shocking moment came just five days before she died.
Suzanne had collapsed at home after having prepared her breakfast but finding herself unable to eat. By the time the ambulance got her to emergency, she was largely immobile and had great difficulty speaking. She was obviously quite thirsty and when I asked one of the emergency physicians to start hydrating her intravenously,
