A Kanata family discovered an unexpected visitor Monday night when they were preparing an evening snack.
Casey Canning was in his kitchen, washing grapes with a strainer when he noticed a spider web. A closer look proved that web was the work of a female black widow spider, which was nestled in the stems of the fruit.
He yelled to his son, Cain, who then yelled to his sister to come look.

Egan: Widow seeks answers after husband found on floor, bleeding
Earlier this week, Rita Bisson saw the wrenching images of a vulnerable elderly man — lying helpless in bed — being struck over and over by a care worker at the Garry J. Armstrong long-term care home.
After a restless night, she could be silent no longer.
Bisson, 85, was moved to reveal the story of her husband François — 88, in a wheelchair, with advanced dementia — who was found bleeding on the floor of his room at the city-run Armstrong home on Dec. 30, 2016.

Canadian nationals a lure for U.S. hurdler Jarvis Harris
Runners want to run, which is one way of explaining how Jarvis Harris of New Orleans, La., made it to the start line for the men’s 400 metres of the Canadian track and field championships in Ottawa on Thursday.
His time of 49.57 seconds would have qualified Harris for the Friday semifinals, but he had already told meet officials he would bypass that race in favour of his specialty, the 400-metre hurdles on Saturday and Sunday.
“Just another racing opportunity. The 400-metre dash is s -
Former home of Lester B. Pearson is pretty much falling down
Lester B. Pearson’s former home on Cobourg Street is a dump.
Maybe 60 years ago it was a pleasant place for Pearson to escape the bustle of Parliament Hill.
Today, it’s pretty much falling down.
“An intervention is impossible. Where do you even begin?” architect Judah Mulalu said Thursday as he took this reporter and a photographer on a soggy tour through 231 Cobourg St. in Sandy Hill.

Reevely: Police forcing their way into Pride aren't helping
The organizers of Ottawa’s Pride parade won’t stop Chief Charles Bordeleau and other police officers from marching in uniform, says Capital Pride’s chair Tammy Dopson, but the police will have to live with the fallout of their decision.
“If the chief and his team show up in uniform, the community will decide how they’re going to respond to that,” Dopson said in an interview Thursday.

City must get "creative" to pay for O-Train to Riverside South
The city must “get creative” if it wants to bring the O-Train all the way to Riverside South, planning boss Steve Willis said Thursday.
Tweaking the proposed extension of the north-south Trillium Line to bring trains almost a kilometre closer to the fast-growing suburb can be done as part of the $3-billion Stage 2 transit program. The future station would move south from a rural area along Bowesville Road to Earl Armstrong Road.

injunction granted in fight against Chelsea plan to make bike trail
A 10-day injunction over conversion of the Wakefield Steam Train’s tracks to a bike trail has left opposing sides arguing over what work is permitted.
Chelsea wants to tear up the old tracks, saying they are damaged beyond repair by repeated washouts and landslides. It wants a bike trail instead, but this has some opposition.
On Wednesday, a judge ruled that for the next 10 days Chelsea and its contractors are limited in what they can do: They can remove rails and ties, but not bring in he -

Actors of colour cast in re-imagined Salt-Water Moon
When theatre director Ravi Jain, who is of South Asian descent, read the script for Salt-Water Moon, the classic play set in rural Newfoundland at the end of the First World War, he imagined people who look like him.
“I look at how it’s relevant now,” said Jain, the founding artistic director of Why Not Theatre in Toronto. “For me, it’s important to re-contextualize the classic in a way that speaks to now. It isn’t a museum piece.”

That is why my wife and I have been volunteers at this residence since it opened in 2005.
I have been president of the Family and Friends Council for almost 10 of those years and my wife is on the board of directors. So we have considerable ex -
