Redblacks connecting with new fans
When Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group president of sports Jeff Hunt talks about the success, on and off the field, of the Ottawa Redblacks, he speaks of being “the envy of the CFL,” with the league’s youngest fan base.
It’s remarkable, really, for a city that skeptics, certainly with some just cause — two franchises (the Rough Riders and Renegades) had come and gone — said could never again properly support the CFL.
But here we are — sel -

Egan: Shocking elder-abuse case shows our shameful complacency
Old, defenceless and slapped around. It is the fate that awaits some of the city’s most vulnerable — the numbers just don’t lie.
In 2016, an estimated 564,000 Canadians were dealing with dementia, a number expected to rise 66 per cent — to 937,000, or equivalent to the entire population of Ottawa — by 2031. How many Georges Karams will be among them?

Teen arrested after stabbing in Ottawa's west end
A 17-year-old male has been arrested in connection with a stabbing of another 17-year-old male in Ottawa’s west end on Tuesday.
Ottawa police say the incident happened in the 100 block of Falcon Brook Road near Richardson Side Road and Highway 417.
Ottawa paramedics received the call at 3:25 p.m.
Paramedics said they transported a 17-year-old male to CHEO in stable condition following “multiple penetrating trauma wounds.”
Police say the other 17-year -
Festival preview: Roddy Ellias, on composing an opera by day and jazz-jamming by night
Last week, there was scant down time for Ottawa guitarist and composer Roddy Ellias given his nightly exertions jamming into the wee hours at the TD Ottawa Jazz Festival’s jam session.
During the day, Ellias had an assignment to finish — composing music for an original chamber opera concert. That concert, one that involves puppets, no less, takes place on Saturday as part of the Music and Beyond festival.
Below, the nothing-if-not-eclectic Ellias describes the latest fruit -

Reevely: Royal motorcade broke Canada Day transit service, OC Transpo boss says
An abrupt police decision to use OC Transpo’s main route through downtown for a royal motorcade was responsible for freezing the heart of the transit system on Canada Day, the agency’s general manager John Manconi says.
OC Transpo gave free rides on July 1, hoping that getting an anticipated 450,000 Canada Day revellers into and out of the core would be easier and faster using buses rather than a mix of transit and private cars. The transit system can get about 8,000 people an hour i -

Two people were injured on Tuesday in a 10-car crash on Highway 417 eastbound approaching Nicholas Street.

Ottawa won the Grey Cup, but lost money doing it

Gray jay — not our national bird after all. Yet.
The gray jay won’t be our national bird after all. No bird will be. We’re not going to have one, at least not yet.
The Royal Canadian Geographical Society ran a two-year National Bird Project, inviting the public to vote for their favourites. The winner: The gray jay, a clever and sometimes friendly inhabitant of all provinces and territories.
The Society and its magazine, Canadian Geographic, had no official role in choosing a national symbol but they hoped the federal government wo -
Khadr case: The perils of ignoring international law
Following the 1991 Persian Gulf War, U.S. Department of Defense lawyers conducted a survey of all of the law of war violations that then-Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein had committed during the conflict. The results of their study were definitive: Not one single action committed by Saddam’s forces that violated the laws of war resulted in any kind of strategic gain during the conflict. At best, the actions were neutral; at worst, they were counter-productive.
This lesson also holds true for th -

Redblacks' owners push CFL on changes to Grey Cup money sharing
The Ottawa Redblacks’ ownership group wants the Canadian Football League to change its financial scheme for teams that advance to the Grey Cup after the club took a $1.1-million hit for winning the CFL championship.

Jazzfest review: Mark Guiliana Jazz Quartet does contemporary acoustic jazz proud
Mark Guiliana Jazz QuartetTD Ottawa Jazz FestivalSunday night
These days, It usually strikes me as quaint at best and gratuitous at worst for a jazz group to have the word “jazz” in its name.
Sure, decades ago it worked for Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, the Art Farmer/Benny Golson Jazztet and the Jazz Crusaders — although that last group, in 1971, dropped the “Jazz” because they’d gotten less jazzy.
But in 2017? Really? All the cool groups sport cool nam -

Today's letters: Stop failing our frail elderly
Canada is failing the frail elderly
Re: CRUEL TREATMENT, July 4.
I didn’t get beyond the pictures and the first few lines of your article before I burst into tears. This was my dad, who died two years ago of dementia, in another home in another province. He had lived through the Second World War bombings, immigrated to Canada, continued his studies, built a business, raised a family, been a strong community advocate.
But at the end of his life, he had bruises on his body that could not hav -
Antiques: Value soars with this Avro lighter
Q. My sister and I are looking after my father’s belongings and came across this lighter. It has the aircraft in red flying to the left of the words ‘Avro-Aircraft.’ It about 4.5 cm wide. He was so proud of this accomplishment and traveled to Florida many times to promote the Arrow and met with Howard Hughes, who was very interested in this project. Does it have much of a va -
Bluesfest preview: Pokey Lafarge brings Manic Revelations to Ottawa
Pokey LafargeWhen: Thursday, July 6, 9 p.m. Where: RBC Bluesfest, Bluesville Tent
Manic Revelations, the new album that Pokey Lafarge released a couple of months ago, is terrific, full of nimble melodies, bright horns and plenty of food for thought from the down-to-earth troubadour who has a style reminiscent of Hank Williams.
One of the standout tracks is Riot in the Streets, which sports a breezy feel that belies the turbulent events that inspired it. The song was originally wr -

Salvation Army is making the right move in Vanier
The Salvation Army has confirmed plans to redevelop a site on Montreal Road as a multi-service community hub. Some in the community are expressing fears that the facility will further stigmatize the neighbourhood. Words used to express concern include: worrying about the “dumping” of “those” people, or replicating the “scene of a gothic movie” filled with unsavoury characters including “the mentally troubled.”

Cohen: A year post-Subban, what should Habs fans think?
It has been a year since the Montreal Canadiens traded P.K. Subban to the Nashville Predators for Shea Weber. Like prison, poverty and politics, a year in hockey is an eternity.
Zhou Enlai was famously asked what he thought of the impact of the French Revolution. “Too early to say,” he famously replied, some 200 years after the storming of the Bastille.
We do not have wait two centuries. On June 29, 2016, this deal looked like a folly for the Canadiens. But we could only speculate. N -
