OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. — Golf, perhaps more than any other, is a streaky sport.
Brooke Henderson is on a hot streak.
In her past two tournaments, she has a win in the Meijer LPGA Classic and a solo second in the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.
The numbers reflect her outstanding play lately. She jumped four spots in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings released Monday, to eighth from 12th — her highest ranking was second about a year ago — and she has banked $622,446

Spliff-sniffing sign in Gatineau doubles as candid camera
A billboard that caught whiffs of weed, or whatever else people were smoking, served as a candid camera for patriotic puffers who took in Canada Day from the Quebec side.
Prohibition, a seller of smoking goods, set up an electronic billboard on the banks of the Ottawa River opposite Parliament Hill showing a countdown to July 1, 2018.
That’s when the Liberal government says it will provide “regulated and restricted” access to marijuana.
But the billboard also contained a -
'Being in the line was more fun for me': Teen high-fives his way to fun in long Canada Day line
Long lines, rain and confusion marred Canada Day for some, but for Art Kaplan-Myrth, the hullabaloo downtown proved to be Saturday’s best attraction.
The 17-year-old Ottawan ventured downtown with his parents, his 13-year-old brother and his camera.
The family arrived early-ish, sometime before 10 a.m., he says.
With lines already snaking around the Parliamentary precinct, Kaplan-Myrth knew they had time to kill.
And so, apparently, did his brother Noam. Boredom paired with a high-energy a -
Constable demoted for nine months for faking traffic warnings
An Ottawa police officer has been demoted for nine months after pleading guilty to fabricating traffic warnings and creating false Ottawa police records in what continues of the force’s efforts to stamp out the practice of “ghost warnings.”
Const. Frederick Thornborrow, a police officer since 2009, was demoted last week from first-class to second-class constable.
Thornborrow pleaded guilty in May to two counts of discreditable conduct and one count of insubordination under the -

The body of a missing camper was found on Saturday in Sainte-Therese-de-la-Gatineau, approximately 130 kilometres north of Ottawa.

Emergency crews arrived on scene and located Carreau’s body. Police do not suspect foul play, however the investigation continu -

'It's beautiful': One immigrant's Canadian journey to a land of snow and freedom
Just weeks after arriving in Canada from India, Deepa Varghese saw snow for the very first time.
“I wanted to touch it, I wanted to eat it,” she recalls of that day in 2011. “We were travelling to Toronto and I asked Mathew to pull the car over on the highway, and I was taking some snow and eating it. I was super excited. It was just flurries that day, but after one or two days it stopped snowing, and when I looked out the window it was so beautiful and so white.”

Today's letters: Canada 150 party plagued by poor planning
Citizen letter writers have strong views about the preparation and security during Canada Day celebrations downtown. You can write to us too, at [email protected] Our guidelines are here.

Canada Day an exercise in poor planning
Our family with young children was excited to make the special trip from Toronto to Ottawa to experience Canada’s 150th birthday. As we got on the bus going downtown for Canada Day, you could feel the excitement.
However, once we got off the bus -
Yes, all that security on Canada Day was essential
Canada Day 150 was a bit of a wash, if you consider the weather. Still, there was the usual display of facepaint maple leaves, Canada flag capes and T-shirts with Canada-themed logos. We may be a diffident people wearing our nationality with some hesitation on our sleeves, but when we do, as I have seen over five decades of Canada Day, we do it well.
Or, mostly well. This year’s commemoration in Ottawa was seen as a washout by some, and not just because of the rain. A lot of comp -

Polyurethane Over Oil Stain?
Q: Can I safely apply polyurethane to an indoor project that was coated with an oil-based stain?
A: Sure you can. This is the situation where polyurethane is usually applied. As long as the oil stain is completely dry beforehand you’ll be fine. You can even apply water-based urethane over an oil-based stain.
All this said, there’s more to getting smooth results than just brushing on several coats of polyurethane. If you do this and nothing else your resul -
Milnes: Letting our Canada 150 freak flags fly — a family tradition
Arthur Milnes and his wife, Alison, embarked upon a special project to mark Canada’s sesquicentennial year: A time capsule. But rather than filling it with things from around their home in Kingston, the pair have reached out far and wide to people, places and institutions around the globe with any connection to this country. The responses, from small towns to celebrities, has been overwhelming. This is the first in a series of columns by Arthur Milnes.

Concert review: Feist enchants despite rain at Ottawa Jazz Festival
Feist
Ottawa Jazz Festival, Confederation Park
Reviewed Sunday
The Ottawa Jazz Festival wrapped up Sunday with an enchanting performance by Canadian songstress Feist, despite a rainstorm that built in intensity along with the music.
Things began innocently enough. The Polaris Prize-winning singer-songwriter is back in front of audiences this summer with her first album in six years. Entitled Pleasure, her fourth studio project is a raw and introspective exploration of loneliness, not exactly the -

Oh so close: Brooke Henderson second to Danielle Kang in Women's PGA
OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. — Brooke Henderson nailed it.
In the moments after her eagle putt on the 18th hole at Olympia Fields Country Club came up one roll short and she wound up one stroke behind Danielle Kang, Henderson summed up the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship perfectly.
“Really, she won this,” said Henderson, whose 66 was the low round of the tournament on Sunday and showed her competitiveness whenever she gets near a trophy. “I was just trying to make it a little -
Ottawa Champions lose to New Jersey Jackals despite fine pitching effort
Daniel Cordero pitched a complete game for the Ottawa Champions on Sunday, limiting the New Jersey Jackals to eight hits and two runs, and only one of those runs was earned.
It still wasn’t enough to produce a victory for the Champions, who lost 2-1 to the Jackals in a Can-Am League baseball game at RCGT Park.
Kuehl McEachern received credit for the victory as the first of three relievers for New Jersey starter David Richardson, who had allowed just one run to the Champions over 6 2/3 inni -

Poutine or Putin? Seoulites discover the power of a Canadian favourite
SEOUL, South Korea — When native South Koreans hear the word “poutine” for the first time, they usually think “Putin.” As in, Vladimir Putin.
So says Ellie Kim, the 33-year-old store owner of Oh! Poutine, a modest shop tucked along a narrow, winding street in Itaewon, Seoul’s most multicultural district. The streets of the so-called “global village” of Korea’s capital are packed with stores, restaurants and stalls housing the impor
