Two stop signs will occupy some of city council’s time this week, the latest attempts to repair botched road designs with impotent street signs.
Both of these are in Orléans, but we’re starting to do this all over — reacting to resident’s complaints that their streets are unsafe by putting up stop signs and lowering speed limits, knowing that at best they’ll be ignored and at worst endanger innocent people who assume they’ll be safer than they really ar

Strong turnaround has Senators prospect Filip Chlapik going in right direction
The wakeup call was delivered to Filip Chlapik one year ago, and he has answered in a big way.
After last summer’s development camp, the Ottawa Senators were ready to cut ties with their 2015 second-round draft pick. Chlapik had followed up a 33-goal season in his draft year by scoring 12. His compete level was low. His habits were poor. He played on the perimeter. His overall game was undesirable.
The Senators told Chlapik he wouldn’t be offered a contract.

Why many are still in limbo after the great flood of 2017
Sandy Zhang couldn’t believe her bad luck. The Ottawa River in early May had swept over the front lawn of her Constance Bay home and into the basement and living room.
When the water reached knee level, Zhang and her husband, Honggao Ji, took refuge in the apartment above the nearby Lighthouse Grocery Store and Restaurant, the business they had acquired only three years earlier.

Capital Builders: John Pearson, the genius architect of Parliament
His influence towers over Ottawa — literally — and is seen around the world as a symbol of Canada, yet few people today recognize the name of John Andrew Pearson.
Pearson was chief architect of the Peace Tower and Parliament’s rebuilt Centre Block, creating a masterpiece in place of the ashes and rubble left by the devastating fire of 1916.

'It is the capital, after all.' Fireworks show caps Canada Day
It was Canada Day, so Oura Fofana made a point of being at Major’s Hill Park to watch the annual fireworks display.
“Since I’ve been in Ottawa, I’ve been more interested in Canada Day,” said Fofana, a 22-year-old from Hamilton.
Thousands gathered around Parliament Hill and Major’s Hill Park for the giant pyrotechnics show that lasted 20 minutes and 17 seconds in honour of Canada 150.

A call for 'liberation of indigenous nations' amid the Canada 150 bash
The way forward is not always the clearest or easiest path.
While dignitaries from Prince Charles to Justin Trudeau spoke about reconciliation from Parliament Hill’s Canada Day stage, indigenous demonstrators rejected the notion as “lip service” and demanded action.
They held signs calling for the “liberation of indigenous nations” and, in a sign that questioned the significance of the number 150, proclaimed “500 years of indigenous resistance.”

Brooke Henderson still contending for Women's PGA Championship title
OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. — Brooke Henderson would like to give Canada a belated Canada Day present.
The 19-year-old from Smiths Falls would like to wrap up a successful defence of her KPMG Women’s PGA Championship on Sunday, but to do that she will have to come from behind at Olympia Fields Country Club, just as she last year in the Pacific Northwest, where she shot a final-round 65 and then beat Lydia Ko in a playoff to win her first major title.
