The other Canada Day: Communities celebrate away from the Hill
So vast were the crowds converging on Parliament Hill Saturday that you could be forgiven for thinking it was the only place around celebrating the country’s 150th anniversary.
But, in fact, there were many Canada 150 gathering scattered throughout the perimeter, each offering slightly different variations on the theme.
Some, such as the early afternoon, family-oriented affair organized by the Beacon Hill Community Association stressed the convenience of celebrating without having to ventu -

The meaning of reconciliation: 'We're not anywhere near that word called forward. We're not even on the first syllable'
Reconciliation with Canada’s indigenous people has been an underlying theme of Canada’s year-long 150 celebrations.
“You can only do this in a relationship, and my new friends, who are First Nations, Inuit and Métis, have changed my understanding of what it means to be Canadian,” Minister of Indigenous and Northern Affairs Carolyn Bennett said last December at a sunrise ceremony in St. John’s, N.L., to launch the initiative.

On human rights, Canada is still a work in progress
There is no place on Earth like Canada – the land of the free. Canada is perfect for anyone seeking a life of relative tranquility, peace, freedom, equality and opportunity. That’s why more people immigrate to Canada – 250,000 per year approximately – than almost anywhere else on the planet. Canada is the second-largest land mass on the planet, blessed with plenty of water and magnificent lakes, rivers and mountains. Its people are resilient given the harsh winters, yet c -
History of Muslims in Canada reminds us all of who we are
There’s nothing like a birthday to inspire introspection.
For Canadian Muslims, the opportunity to commemorate and celebrate our history since pre-Confederation comes at a critical juncture. If ever there was a time to fully acknowledge and appreciate the contributions of var -

Capital Facts: The beginnings of Ottawa
In celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, the Citizen is rolling out one fact each day for 150 days until July 1, highlighting the odd, the fascinating and the important bits of Ottawa history you might not know about.

Ringing in 150: How an Ottawa church whose bell rang out on July 1, 1867, is today part of the New Canada
The clanging sound of unbridled rejoicing rang across Ottawa the moment the Dominion of Canada came into being at midnight on July 1, 1867. And one of the very bells that joined in that chorus 150 years ago today, pealing its welcome to Confederation, still tolls in the heart of the 21st century capital.

As part of Canada’s sesquicentennial celebrations, the Citizen’s Bruce Deachman has been out in search of Ottawans — 150 of them — to learn their stories. Saturday’s story marks No. 150 in the series.
“I’m from Gatineau now, but I come from Vanier. I remember coming here in 1967. We had visitors from out west. My father was from Calgary and his relatives were coming from there to visit Ottawa. It was the 100th birthday, so it was very special. My co -
150 years ago today: Photo captures a capital that no longer exists
The Citizen asked Randy Boswell, a longtime Ottawa journalist and Carleton University professor, to reconstruct life in the capital on the day Canada was born. The history specialist dug into archives and old newspapers, unearthing a series of long-overlooked stories that shed fresh light on Confederation’s first 24 hours and some of the people whose lives were touched by the events of that landmark day 150 years ago.
Here’s one thing we can say with reasonable certaint -

What we think: Canadian opinions have undergone a 'revolution' in 50 years, study finds
A study that compares Canadian attitudes today to those held 50 years ago suggests our country is less patriarchal, less religious and vastly more tolerant of gay people, intermarriage — and tight pants.
Yet Canadians celebrating the country’s centennial in 1967 also displayed more optimism than those marking this year’s sesquicentennial.
“It’s interesting to recollect what the country was like at the centennial and compare it to where things are today: t -
Jedwab: Canada has improved a great deal since 1967
Looking back at Canada’s centennial year in 1967, many of the country’s baby boomers may feel a bit warm and fuzzy. That summer was highlighted by Montreal’s World’s Fair/Expo 67; some 50 million people from around the world visited.
Although only eight years old at the time, I vividly recall the monorail and some of the incredible pavilions from so many far off places that seemed to put the world at our doorstep (my favorite was the Bell Telephone pavilion with the remar -

Jazzfest Review: Charles Bradley brings the heat, blows the clouds away
Charles Bradley & His Extraordinaires
TD Ottawa Jazz Festival
Reviewed Friday
Charles Bradley blew the rain clouds away and likely left behind a few scorch marks on stage during a stirring soul revue at the TD Ottawa Jazz Festival.
The 68-year-old Bradley was in fine form Friday, less than a year removed from a stomach cancer diagnosis that forced him to cancel a lengthy tour to undergo treatment.
He barely missed a step since his rousing appearances in years past on Ottawa festival stages, -
Pre-Canada Day revellers get taste of high security, PM makes appearance
Pre-Canada Day revellers got a sneak peek of what to expect on July 1, along with a surprise visit from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie Grégoire-Trudeau who made an appearance on Parliament Hill.
With mist and dark clouds looming over the horizon, thousands of visitors descended on downtown Friday. Before they were allowed to make their way to the outdoor main stage where pre-show sound checks were being held, every visitor had to pass through the white security tent on -

One of the organizers of the indigenous ceremonies taking place on Parliament Hill was arrested and later released on Friday for breaching a trespassing notice that was issued on Wednesday. Brooke Henderson tied for eighth midway through Women's PGA Championship
OLYMPIA FIELDS, ILL. — The eagle putt on the the 18th hole at Olympia Fields curled up to the hole and fell in, the biggest of many crucial putts off Brooke Henderson’s hot putter in the second round of the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, setting her up for a strong defence of her title on the weekend.
After she started on the 10th tee Friday, the eagle just before the turn sparked the 19-year-old from Smiths Falls to a 2-under-par 69 and gave her a 5-under total of 137 through -
Deer: Why the Parliament Hill teepee matters for reconciliation
A colleague told me this week that anniversaries are meant to reflect on the good and the bad.
With that in mind, there’s much for Canadians, and Indigenous people alike, to reflect on amid celebrations of the 150th anniversary of confederation, especially when it comes to the country’s relationship with Indigenous Peoples.
We can start with the action of Parliament Hill security and police on Wednesday evening when a group of Indigenous people and supporters wanted to erect a teepee -
Pride doesn't want police uniforms in parade, but chief says they'll have the choice
Ottawa police will not have a float or a vehicle in the Capital Pride parade this year, but those from the force participating will have the choice to wear their uniforms — against the wishes of Pride organizers.
To ensure all are welcome in the parade, including LGBTQ2 youth, and radicalized and indigenous people, police officers were asked, in a statement from Capital Pride’s board of directors, to “reserve their uniforms and vehicles for official work duties only this year.& -
Ottawa's John Kelly to miss the cut in U.S. Senior Open
A long day on the golf course Friday will leave Ottawa’s John Kelly on the outside of the cut-line in the U.S. Senior Men’s Open golf championship at Peabody, Mass.
Kelly, 57, shot a 12-over-par 82 for a two-day total of 157. That was going to be well over the 141 or better required to rank in the top 60 and ties and to qualify for the final two rounds.
The cut was not finalized Friday because inclement weather delayed completion of the second round until Friday morning.

Same time next half century: Youngsters who last met in 1967 are reunited in 2017
Sleep did not come early or easily to Oopik Nakashook last Friday evening, as anxiety about her planned lunch the following day with Judy Hill and Hill’s family continued to gnaw at her.
The whole week had been like this, since the two agreed to meet Saturday at Dunn’s Famous Deli in the ByWard Market. What was she going to say when they met? What would she ask first? Her husband, Pitse Naulaq, told her not to worry, but that was impossible. At 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, she texted Judy: -

To mark the 150th birthday of Confederation, we asked local residents from a variety of backgrounds to share their wishes for the future of the capital and the country. Today: Daniel Alfredsson.

Senators still trying to keep forward Viktor Stalberg
The Ottawa Senators are trying to keep their team together.
In the case of forward Viktor Stalberg, it may go down to the wire.
With free agents set to hit the market Saturday at noon, talks between Senators general manager Pierre Dorion and Stalberg’s agent, Wade Arnott, were continuing.
Acquired from the Carolina Hurricanes at the trade deadline in exchange for a third-round draft pick, Stalberg, 31, who made $1.5 million last season, was a good fit with the Senators. He has interest fro
