There’s so much red and white on Parliament Hill that when the hundreds of thousands of bleary-eyed partygoers finally finish toasting the country’s 150th birthday this weekend, they will be seeing Ottawa awash in a pink haze.
But not everything was rosy on the politics front:
TENSION OVER A TEEPEE
The stand-off between police and indigenous protesters on the Hill was anything but poetic. Activists aiming to build a teepee on the grounds came nose-to-nose with tense Mounties on

Humane Society needs people to adopt and foster animals as shelter population spikes
The Ottawa Humane Society is in urgent need of donations and people to adopt and foster pets as it faces its annual furry Canada Day inundation.
There were more than 600 dogs, cats and other pets in OHS care as of Friday. Of these animals, 36 were waiting for a foster placement and 117 were available for adoption. The remainder were still receiving medical care or are too young to be adopted.

We need more money in health care. Here's one way to get it
If there’s a chance you might get sick, get old, or start a family, this bill will do you harm.” – Former U.S. president Barack Obama
Even President Donald Trump called the initial House of Representatives bill “mean.” Senate Republicans recently delayed discussion and voting on their own health care bill until at least after July 4. Both bills would have left more than 20 million additional people uninsured by 2026 than did Obamacare. According to Obama, the Senate -
Ottawa's first Canada Day: Canoe races, lacrosse and a military review
Ottawa’s first and longest-serving city clerk, William Pittman Lett, was tasked with organizing and directing the celebrations to mark the “inauguration of the Dominion of Canada” on July 1, 1867.
It was a tough job keeping balance between festivity and safety in the rough-and-tumble lumber town that was Ottawa in 1867. A poster that invited residents, authorized by Lett, outlines a day-long roster of events that includes the ringing of bells, the firing of a cannon, bonf -
Fury FC goalkeeper Callum Irving adopts 'less is more' mindset for soccer club
Lest people think he is too easily replaceable, perhaps Callum Irving shouldn’t say his best games are the ones when he does very little.
The Ottawa Fury FC keeper ranks second in the United Soccer League in shutouts with five through 14 games, and he’s fifth in saves with 38, which, come to think of it, is equivalent to kind of an easy night for Ottawa Senators goaltender Craig Anderson.
That said, Irving says less is more for him as Fury FC heads to Louisville for Saturday night&rs -
July 1, 150 years ago: Confederation began with one helluva party
It began with a midnight chorus of bells ringing across the capital, a 101-gun salute by the local rifle regiment and a “monster bonfire” at the sprawling picnic grounds we know today as Major’s Hill Park.
When Confederation officially came into force 150 years ago today — as the Notre Dame Cathedral clock struck 12 on that historic Monday and fireworks lit up Ottawa’s dark summer sky — hundreds of the city’s 16,000 residents couldn’t wait for the -
The Knotty Knitters ARE BACK and they're knottier than ever for Canada 150
Monetta Ayotte started knitting when she was 11 years old. It was during the Second World War and she was knitting for the Canadian army.
“When they made the army winter jackets they didn’t put cuffs in them,” said Ayotte, 90, who was born in Vermillion, Alta.
“So they came to the school and they brought us four needles and we had to learn how to knit — that’s how I started knitting and I’ve been knitting ever since.”
Ayotte is one of th -
Senators prospect Nick Paul determined to get his career back on track
Mark these words down: The Ottawa Senators will add a big, bruising, desperate and determined forward to their 2017-18 roster.
That’s also not counting wingers or centres they may sign, while taking at least an initial pass on defencemen, when the National Hockey League free-agent market opens Saturday.
No, the above guarantee is that Nick Paul will take a big step forward, after stumbling backwards last season. In this, the final year of his entry-level contract, he is going to become the -
The best places in Ottawa-Gatineau to watch the Canada Day fireworks
The sesquicentennial fireworks on Saturday are expected to be the capital’s largest pyrotechnics show for Canada Day ever, with 150 fireworks lighting up the Ottawa-Gatineau sky.
This year, the fireworks display, run by Royal Pyrotechnie, has been extended to 20 minutes and 17 seconds from 15 minutes. The theme is a celebration of the nation’s four seasons, accompanied by an all-Canadian soundtrack.
The fireworks will launch at 11 p.m. from Nepean -

Ottawa's got game
It’s tempting to think about the city’s remarkable run of athletic achievement over the past year and conclude that we’re living through a Golden Age in Ottawa sports history.
It might even be true: a surprise Can-Am League baseball title last summer for the fledgling Ottawa Champions; Stittsville’s own Erica Wiebe grabbing Olympic wrestling gold at the Summer Games in Rio; a heart-stopping 2016 Grey Cup victory last fall for the underdog Ottawa Redblacks, a triumph that -
Police renew call for witnesses in Rideau Street homicide
Ottawa police are renewing their request for witnesses to a shooting on June 26, which occurred near the Mingle Room Bar & Lounge on Rideau Street.
Ashton Dickson, 25, a popular local athlete, was gunned down around 1 a.m. after an argument that began inside the Mingle Room spilled outside.
He died at the scene a short time later.
While police were reported to have already received surveillance video from other businesses in the area, they said in a release Friday they believe there wer -

Ottawa jail improvements moving in right direction, officials say
The Ottawa Carleton Detention Centre now has better nursing care and cleanliness, but still needs to make improvements with poor food and prisoners’ mental health, says an update on changes at the jail.
On Friday, the ministry issued the third of three progress reports on what is being done about 42 recommendations from a task force investigating conditions for prisoners, most of whom are awaiting trial.
Action in 21 of the 42 areas for improvement is complete, says the Ministry of Communi -

OC Session: Jazz singer Kellylee Evans bounces back from what life's thrown at her
Ottawa’s Juno-winning jazz singer, Kellylee Evans, is dipping her toe back into show biz this summer after a prolonged period spent recuperating from a concussion. But she’s not ready to call it a comeback. “I think I’m just popping my head into the room and going, ‘Hey, can I sing a bit?’” the irrepressible musician said during a recent interview. She performs July 3 as part of the Scene@6 series of free 6 p.m. concerts in the NAC’s new City Room.N -

Festival preview: Always eclectic Kronos Quartet nods to cutting-edge Canadian music
When the Kronos Quartet plays Dominion-Chalmers United Church next Wednesday, just four days after Canada Day, the renowned San Francisco-based string ensemble will be sure to feature some Canadian content on its typically eclectic, globe-trotting program.
After its adaptation of an Indian raga and before its version of The Who’s Baba O’Riley, Kronos will play specially commissioned pieces by Polaris Music Prize-winning Inuk throat singer Tanya Tagaq and the young Montreal composer, -
Capital Wishlist: Adam Welch on living a good life
To mark the 150th birthday of Confederation, we asked local residents from a variety of backgrounds to share their wishes for the future of the capital and the country. Here are some thoughts from Adam Welch.

PM, wife visit ceremonial teepee on Parliament Hill
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife, Sophie Grégoire-Trudeau, paid a visit Friday morning to the ceremonial teepee set up by a group of First Nations people on Parliament Hill.
Trudeau, wearing jeans and a Canada 150 denim jacket, and Grégoire-Trudeau, wrapped in a green blanket in the chilly morning fog, leaned over to greet occupants, before entering the structure.
The visit had not been announced in advance and it was not known what was discussed.

Liberals decline to release information about Iraq fighting– public interest is elsewhere, says defence minister
Canadian military personnel will be in Iraq for another two years.
But don’t expect the Liberal government to provide any details when troops are involved in fighting in that country.
Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan says the Liberal government has reversed the policy of the previous Conservative government on informing the media and public about such incidents. He declined a number of times on Thursday to provide any details on such incidents or how many there have been.

As a country marking 150 years, our nation is looking back on the past, marking our accomplishments while, we hope, learning from our mistakes.
But as cities evolve, the brick and mortar walls that link us to our past are often torn down and replaced with glass and concrete, in turn disconnecting us from our past.
For one family, the Jacobsons, the past is all around them in the form of a heritage home buil -

As much as $600 million U.S. will be cut from the United Nations peacekeeping budget.

Capital Wishlist: Peter Herrndorf on how the arts celebrate Canada
To mark the 150th birthday of Confederation, we asked local residents from a variety of backgrounds to share their wishes for the future of the capital and the country. Today: Peter Herrndorf.
My family and I moved to Canada from Holland in 1948 in the aftermath of the Second World War. We travelled by ship, arriving in New York City, where we lived for a short period before eventually settling in Winnipeg. I have lived in a number of places since, including Halifax (to attend Dalhousie Universi -

Spencer: 1967 Citizen – First draft of history sure was rough
In 1967, there were 15 police forces in the National Capital Region. Hospital bed shortages made the news. A new science and technology museum was slated to open on St. Laurent Boulevard. The House of Commons planned to sit into July.
And the Ottawa Citizen could be mailed – that’s good, old-fashioned snail-mail – to your cottage if you were a subscriber leaving town in the summer.
What a rich time capsule a newspaper is – the traditional, unwieldy physical version, -
Downton: Why Newfoundlanders aren't thrilled at Canada 150
HALIFAX – My parents left their home in St. John’s in 1948 to come to Halifax, my father to Dalhousie’s dental school and my mother to the brand new Victoria General hospital, to work as an RN. Because they were entering a foreign country, they carried their chest X-rays rolled up under their arms as evidence they were free of tuberculosis.
That was the tradition then. But new traditions came to Newfoundland along with Canada, and, after the initial enticements to join up -

Humidity will add insult to wet weather's injury
Yes, there’s going to be rain Friday, and most likely a thunderstorm or two.
Worse still, for many, is that it looks like the same forecast for the foreseeable future.
Friday’s outlook is mainly cloudy, with a 60-per-cent chance of showers this afternoon with a risk of thunderstorms.
Adding insult to injury, the humidity is expected to be stifling, with a high of 23 C bumped up to 32 on the humidex. The UV rating is expected to be 7 or high.
Showers and T-storms are expected to conti -

Watch Michael J. Fox rock out with Joan Jett onstage at GG awards gala
Artists honoured with a Governor General’s Performing Arts Award are not expected to perform at the gala that pays tribute to them. All that’s required is to bask in the glory of the nation’s highest honour for the performing arts.Michael J. Fox was an exception during the 25th anniversary edition of the GGPAA gala that took place at the National Arts Centre on Thursday. The B.C.-born actor made a surprise appearance on stage, armed with an electric guitar and set to perf -

One man's journey to make Canada 150 special
I have never met Karen Wynne of Matawan, New Jersey.
I probably never will.
But today, as my country marks the 150th anniversary of Confederation, I consider her a dear and valued friend.
You see, Ms. Wynne and countless others across the United States, and in some cases overseas, have reminded my wife, Alison, and I in recent months, how privileged we truly are as a people.
Karen is the town clerk in Matawan, a community of roughly 8,500 souls I doubt I’ll ever visit. Earlier this year, h -
Cohen: What if Canada is wasted on Canadians?
Amid the groaning banquet of objects and artifacts, a gentle awakening awaits visitors to the new Canadian History Hall in the Canadian Museum of History. It is Expo 67.
An exhibit and film, playing on a loop, trigger a cascade of memory. They recall that moment in Montreal when we staged the most successful world’s fair of the 20th century. It was Canada’s glorious, crowded hour, the centrepiece of a year-long national celebration of our centennial in 1967.

Tales of July 1, 1867: How a disgraced British MP failed to turn Ottawa into a hotbed of culture
The Citizen asked Randy Boswell, a longtime Ottawa journalist and Carleton University professor, to reconstruct life in the capital on the day Canada was born. The history specialist dug into archives and old newspapers, unearthing a series of long-overlooked stories that shed fresh light on Confederation’s first 24 hours and some of the people whose lives were touched by the events of that landmark day 150 years ago. This is the fifth such story, in a series that will continue to Ca -
Lessons from Canada's internment of the Ukrainians
It’s a small case in a big hall. I have no idea of how many people will pause beside it, but millions of visitors will eventually tour through the Canadian History Hall.
The first guests entering this newly renovated space within the Canadian Museum of History will arrive today, Canada Day, the 150th birthday of our country. Odds are more than a few will stop where I did. That’s good.
Canada’s history has generally been righteous, even if what awaits a passer-by in this particu -
Capital Wishlist: David Smith on giving back to the community
As were we growing up, in what used to be called Lower Town, I remember my learned and wise father reciting the words of Abraham Lincoln: “A man never stands so tall as when he stoops to help a small child.” This somehow became my life’s motto and with that thought, I ask the following questions.
What has Ottawa meant to me? I have, over my 84 years, seen this wonderful place grow to a world-class city that still has at its roots generosity, sharing and compassion for -
Capital Voices: 'I started stealing so I could go to jail and get some help'
In celebration of Canada’s sesquicentennial, the Citizen’s Bruce Deachman has been out in search of Ottawans — 150 of them — to learn their stories. The series concludes tomorrow.
“I was born here in Ottawa, on Heatherington, and I’ve lived all over Ottawa, from Rockland to Stittsville. I’d say about 25 places, and I’ve been to about seven different schools. I’ve lived off St. Joseph Boulevard in Orléans, I’ve lived off Mead -
Capital Facts: Two Ottawa 67's greats
In celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, the Citizen is rolling out one fact each day for 150 days until July 1, highlighting the odd, the fascinating and the important bits of Ottawa history you might not know about.
As the Ottawa 67’s celebrate their 50th anniversary this season, two of their greats have been recognized on and off the ice as honoured members of the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. Legendary GM/coach Brian Kilrea and ex-blueliner Denis Potvin, who won four Sta -
