Short passes were the plan for Redblacks
In football, sometimes it’s best just to take what you’re given. But the Ottawa Redblacks aren’t losing sight of what they may need to do to beat the Stampeders Thursday night in Calgary.
In a 31-31 double-overtime tie Friday at TD Place, the Redblacks relied on mostly short passing routes — with quarterback Trevor Harris completing 33-of-45 passes for 300 yards.
Explained Redblacks offensive co-ordinator Jaime Elizondo: “We went into the game thinking we would take -
Egan: Last grads make final walk from Greenbank Middle School
Wednesday is the final graduation day at Greenbank Middle School, as rows of shiny shoes and fancy dresses attend the bittersweet end of a 50-year era, if not an entire educational concept.
Opened in 1968, the “middle” school of Grade 7 and 8 students will close for good Friday, sending students and most of the 20 teachers to Sir Robert Borden High School in September.
“It’s an amazing school, that’s why it’s bittersweet, right?” said principal Dennis Pa -
Ottawa driver who killed his best friend sentenced to three years in prison
It started as a night of video games and beer, followed by a trip to the pub for Ryan Smith and Teague McEwen, best pals who had shared a brotherly bond since Grade 6.
It ended with Smith’s speeding car rolling over at least twice in a darkened ditch before slamming into a traffic light pole on a rural stretch of road in April 2015.
On Tuesday, the 25 year old stood in an Ottawa courtroom to say sorry for killing his best friend. Smith was then sentenced to three years in a federal pr -
ByWard Market residents: We must do better for this part of town
The following is submitted by five residents of the ByWard Market.
Why is it that every time there is a violent incident in Ottawa’s ByWard Market – such as the recent shootings and homicides – our councillor, mayor and the ByWard Market’s BIA are relatively silent, or they assure the public that these are one-off incidents and that this part of town is safe and flourishing?
This could not be further from the truth. Come to the ByWard Market on any evening between Wednesd -
Flag Man of Vanier is back and showing his Canada Day colours
The Flag Man of Vanier is back in business.
A year after two dozen of his Canadian flags were stolen just before Canada Day, Henry McCambridge is featuring a grander flag display to ring in Canada’s 150th birthday.
“We’re just showing that these young punks who stole them last year can’t deny us our festivities this year,” McCambridge said. “Us seniors are not just going to lay low and die. We did our own little presentation.”

Elmvale Acres strip mall redo gets nod from planners, neighbours
Something has gone refreshingly right with planning a major transformation of a strip plaza in east Ottawa.
The blueprint for the future of Elmvale Acres Shopping Centre at 1910 St. Laurent Blvd. isn’t perfect in the eyes of the community, but it’s a big improvement from the original design 18 months ago.

Jazzfest preview: Post-Bowie, Donny McCaslin breaks out of the jazz bubble
Don’t get Donny McCaslin wrong.
Yes, the jazz saxophonist and bandleader was feeling a bit burnt out during a recent interview. He was home in Brooklyn with his young family, but also feeling “haggard” following a stretch of touring. This year, McCaslin expects to be on the road for more than five months, visiting locales as distant as Australia and Japan as a leader for the first time.
But McCaslin, who has a famously sunny personality, says he is simply grateful to be so busy -
Rockfest had law-abiding rockers, Sûreté says

Canadians should “celebrate” JTF2 sniper’s killing of Islamic State gunman, says Trudeau
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Canadian special forces are doing what is expected of them on their mission in Iraq and the public should celebrate what the military says is a record-breaking sniper kill.
Last week the Canadian Forces announced that a JTF2 sniper set the world record for long-range killing when he eliminated an Islamic State member with a shot from 3,540 metres away.
That shot should be celebrated, Trudeau said Tuesday. “What happened there is, first of all, something t -
Today's letters: Redblacks fans embarrassed themselves Friday
Worst football game in decades
It wasn’t the players, but RNation, who undermined the game Friday night. The boos and booze usurped the usual inspirational chants and roars. We deprived the team of support by directing derision at the hapless officials.
It was the worst Ottawa football crowd in at least 40 years. Scary levels of intoxication and scant security to handle the fans who overdid it. Hooliganism at Lansdowne? Let’s hope not.

Why the next Governor General should be indigenous
Canada has achieved much in creating a compassionate, just and harmonious society. However, it needs to go a step further and appoint an indigenous person as Governor General in September, to heal the wounds in its relations with indigenous peoples. This would be the best sesquicentennial celebration of all, a powerful signal on the road to becoming a truly inclusive society.
The English and French settlers in Canada occupied the Governor General’s office by alternating it between themselv -
