Senators say they'd like to keep Dion Phaneuf, but other NHL teams are still calling
CHICAGO — Dion Phaneuf is still with the Ottawa Senators, but there’s no guarantee that will be the case next season.
While the veteran defenceman hadn’t been dealt by the time the National Hockey League amateur draft wrapped up Saturday, Senators general manager Pierre Dorion confirmed other teams had been calling about Phaneuf after he refused to waive the “no-move” clause in his contract, which would have allowed Ottawa to expose him in the expansion draft for th -
Refs vs. Redblacks? Nobody was perfect in season opener
A couple of hours after Friday night’s game, football fans wearing Ottawa Redblacks colours at packed bars around TD Place were still rip-roaring mad at what they described as “brutal” officiating.
Some Redblacks players certainly felt the same way.
A 31-31 double-overtime tie in the Canadian Football League season-opener and Grey Cup rematch with the Calgary Stampeders stung. It should have been better for the Redblacks. While players thought their team got a raw deal, they we -

A 62-year-old Ontario man was found dead outside the gates of the Rockfest music festival in Montebello on Saturday.
It was the first death in the festival’s 12-year history.
Sgt. Daniel Thibaudeau of the Sûreté du Québec said passersby found the man at about 11 a.m. on the sidewalk on Milles Fleurs Street in the small tourist town about 100 kilometres east of Ottawa.
“The man was unconscious and they attempted to resuscitate him, without success,” Thibaudea -

The injuries were not considered life-threatening. -
Royal swans return to mark 50 years in Ottawa, but still cooped up in temporary winter digs
The Crown swans returned to the Rideau River on Saturday during a jolly event marking the 50th anniversary of the regal gift, while the city endures a royal headache trying to find permanent winter lodging for the birds.
The swans arrived from their temporary winter home at Parc Safari in Hemmingford, Que., south of Montreal, to the riverbank, where Mayor Jim Watson and Coun. Diane Deans opened the crates and reintroduced the birds to the wild.
By November, the royal swans will be collected and -

Capital Facts: The reason for the Star of David on one Sandy Hill home
In celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, the Citizen is rolling out one fact each day for 150 days until July 1, highlighting the odd, the fascinating and the important bits of Ottawa history you might not know about.
On a three-storey home on Stewart Street in Sandy Hill, there’s a house with a large Star of David set in white stucco. The home, built in the early 20th century by Oscar Petigorsky, a Russian-born Jewish immigrant, is close by the University of Ottawa.
The reason for -

Jazzfest review: Bill Frisell and Thomas Morgan carried on deep musical conversations
Bill Frisell and Thomas MorganTD Ottawa Jazz FestivalReviewed Friday
“You’re my hero, Bill!” a super-fan called out in the NAC Theatre Friday night, before guitarist Bill Frisell had even played a note.
After that opening heckle, there was a pause. Then Frisell went to his announcing mike and said one of the two sentences he would say during his concert.
“Thomas is my hero,” Frisell, referring the bassist Thomas Morgan, his musical collaborator for the evening. (For -

Redblacks and Stampeders settle for tie in wild CFL season opener
Redblacks 31, Stampeders 31 (OT)
In a Grey Cup rematch Friday night at TD Place, the loudest noise of the night was directed at the officials: boos plus chants of “Ref, you suck” and ‘bulls–t.”
In a 31-31 tie between the Ottawa Redblacks and Calgary Stampeders in the regular-season opener for both teams at TD Place, a call late in the second quarter first got the boobirds going, and there was much more to follow. Calgary’s Kamar Jorden leaned into the end-zone -
Injury bug again bites William Powell, but Redblacks still need him
The Ottawa Redblacks managed to win the Grey Cup last November without a running back at least one of us predicted would be the Canadian Football League’s most outstanding player award winner in 2016.
They should have an much improved offence if that guy, Texas-born 29-year-old William Powell, can stay healthy.
