Financial advisor Conrad Eagan was charming and almost like one of the family, according to the relatives of one of his clients who gathered in an Ottawa courtroom Thursday.
But it was his nice guy routine that allowed him to swindle approximately $3.45 million from the elderly, pocketing money they had saved through their own hard work and perseverance to sate what one of his victims described as his “uncontrollable greed.”

Redblacks not exactly getting a ton of respect
When the Ottawa Redblacks open their CFL season Friday at home against the Calgary Stampeders, they won’t be hung up with any best player polls or how they are slotted in any power rankings. No respect? Yeah, but even though it’s a talking point, none of that stuff matters much.
What’s really important is that the Redblacks, who go into the game relatively healthy — offensive linemen Tommie Draheim (wrist) and Matt Albright (knee) have been placed on the six-game injured -
Hospital chief of staff steps down to spend more time working with homeless
Dr. Jeff Turnbull, chief of staff at The Ottawa Hospital, is stepping down to devote more time to his passion — working with the homeless.
For years, Turnbull has spent one day a week making house calls at the city’s homeless shelters under a program pioneered in Ottawa and emulated around the world.
Demand at the city’s shelters is increasing, and Turnbull said stepping down as chief of staff at the hospital will allow him to devote two or more days a week working in the shelt -

Ottawa police airport units can now carry carbines
Police units at the Ottawa airport now have carbines at their disposal.
The short, military-style assault rifles will improve public safety and help officers better respond to any security threat, a news release stated.

Ottawa esthetician Eve Stewart found in contempt of court for practising medicine
Ottawa esthetician Eve Stewart has been found in contempt of court for practising medicine without a license, in violation of an earlier court order.
The contempt of court finding came after the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario filed a complaint that Stewart was continuing to perform controlled medical acts at her Ottawa business after being prohibited from doing so in 2014.
Stewart, who operates Eve’s Laser Clinic on Viewmount Drive, was found to have performed a nose job on -

City hall blog: AG and city manager have different views on waste
We don’t often witness the auditor general and city manager publicly disagree on something, so seeing Ken Hughes and Steve Kanellakos admitting Thursday they can’t see eye-to-eye on some waste investigations is a notable development.
Hughes has a big-picture view of wasteful behaviour. If any kind of time is being spent on non-work activities during an employee’s work day, that’s a waste, or it might result in wasteful activity.

Queensway drivers privy to rare sight: Porta-potties on the highway
There was at least one driver perhaps close to filling his pants on Highway 417 Wednesday afternoon, just before the afternoon rush hour, when the flat-bed truck he was driving dumped its load on the eastbound lanes near Moodie Drive.
The lost cargo consisted of three porta-potties that finally came to rest on the bus lane shoulder, according to OPP officials, having little impact on the traffic flow.
Fortunately, no one was hurt by the spill. Even better news for environmentalists and others wa -

Several bars in the ByWard Market will remain open until 4 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday to allow for after-parties linked to the 2017 Heineken Escapade Music Festival, provincial regulators have ruled.
The decision to allow the bars to have extended hours was released by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario Thursday morning. The agency said the extended hours were approved due to the size of the annual event, which regularly attracts more than 25,000 attendees over two days.

We could have a city government that asked people what they thought, kept proper records, and used clear rules to decide how to spend money, or we could have a playground at Mooney’s Bay. We picked the playground.
