It could be late fall before a lease is signed allowing The Ottawa Hospital to build on the former site of the Sir John Carling building.
CEO Cameron Love said Wednesday the federal government and the hospital are still working out details of that lease, six month after an agreement was announced to allow a new Civic hospital to be built on the site at the eastern edge of the Central Experimental Farm. He expects it to be signed before the end of the year.

France accused of violating human rights by group lobbying for academic Hassan Diab's release
Hassan Diab’s first hint that French police suspected him of being a terrorist was in October 2007 when a French newspaper reporter approached him after class at Carleton University.
That was exactly 27 years after a devastating bomb attack outside a Paris synagogue that killed four and injured more than 40.
In the year following his short exchange with the French reporter, Diab noticed he was being followed and often obviously so. He complained to the Ottawa police, only to discover later -

Redblacks have tricks up sleeve vs. Stamps
Nearly seven months ago, the Ottawa Redblacks went into the Grey Cup as nine-point underdogs, with, most folks saying, no chance to beat the Calgary Stampeders.
We all know how that turned out. You can bet the Stampeders are still aching from Ottawa’s magical 39-33 overtime victory, sparked by a wounded 41-year-old now-retired quarterback — Henry Burris.
So right out of the gate to open the CFL season, the schedule maker is giving us a Grey Cup rematch — Friday night at T -

Four people have been charged and a large stash of drugs, chemicals and equipment used to produce counterfeit pills have been seized by Ottawa police after an eight-month investigation.
In November 2016, the drug unit began to look into a group of Ottawa residents in their 20s and 30s believed to be responsible for trafficking cocaine and counterfeit pills in the city.

Threats against Wynne range from the bizarre to the serious, documents reveal
Since 2013, Premier Kathleen Wynne has been threatened with beheading over changes to the province’s sex-ed curriculum, and told she should “catch a bullet” for her policies.
These were among records of 97 “security incidents” involving the premier that the Citizen obtained using Freedom of Information laws. The records include four instances in which charges of uttering threats were laid.
The menacing messages Wynne has received since becoming premier run the gamut -

'A historic day': Algonquin tribal flags raised at home of German ambassador
From the barricades to the boardroom, it’s become common to start events in Ottawa with an acknowledgment that the gathering is on “traditional unceded Algonquin territory.”
But the outgoing German ambassador went a step further this week, raising the flags of the Algonquin Anishinabeg Nation and the Algonquins of Pikwàkanagàn First Nation at his Rockcliffe Park residence on the eve of National Aboriginal Day Wednesday.

Crime rates, severity of violent crime up in Ottawa
Reported crime was up in Ottawa in 2016, but the rate of violent crime remained relatively the same, even after a near-record year of homicides, according to the 2016 Ottawa Police Service annual report.
The crime rate was up nearly six per cent from 2015, but the rate of violent crime, despite a year of atypical bloodshed in the city, was down almost one per cent. The rate of non-violent reported crime was up more than seven per cent.

New Afghan army uniform cost $28 million more than needed, says watchdog
The U.S. government’s Special Inspector General for Afghan Reconstruction (SIGAR) released a new report Wednesday on the Pentagon’s procurement of new Afghan National Army (ANA) uniforms.
Key Points:
— DOD’s decision to procure ANA uniforms using a proprietary camouflage pattern was not based on an evaluation of its appropriateness for the Afghan environment.
— Procurement costs to the U.S. government were 40-43 percent than similar non-proprietary -
Maloney: Was Pearson racist?
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced he was removing the name of Hector-Louis Langevin from the prominent Ottawa building that houses the Prime Minister’s Office. Many Canadians are unhappy about Langevin’s involvement, as a minister in Sir John A. Macdonald’s cabinet, with racially based assimilation policies. But the move raises disturbing questions about the potential double standard around naming government buildings and historic, racially based wrongs.

But it may be a short stay.

St. Paul & The Broken Bones have played a ton of shows as they’ve crisscrossed the globe over the past four years, and they may not recall them all, but they’ll probably never forget their last visit to Ottawa.
At CityFolk 2015, the Birmingham, Alabama-based soul revivalists had the unenviable side-stage task of following Van Morrison.

OC Transpo forgot to budget $4.8M to train LRT drivers.
OC Transpo had to figure out where to get $4.8 million for teaching bus operators how drive LRT trains because apparently the transit department forgot to budget the money.
That’s what the transit commission learned on Wednesday during a quick meeting at City Hall.
Transit management needed the commission’s approval to shift money between internal accounts, including $4.8 million from a bus refurbishment fund to an LRT account.
As we reported this week, Transpo is getting ready to tr -
