OC Transpo wants to spend $4.8M on LRT training
OC Transpo wants to earmark $4.8 million for training about 100 staff before the Confederation Line opens next year, another cost that falls outside of the $2.1-billion LRT contract.
Troy Charter, director of transit operations, said the price tag largely covers costs for staff who need to be trained in advance of the LRT line opening in 2018.
“It’s about making sure our staff are operationally ready Day 1,” Charter said in an interview Monday.

Gatineau man guilty of attempting to leave Canada to join ISIL
MONTREAL A Gatineau man was found guilty on Monday of attempting to leave the country to participate in activities of a terrorist group — a conviction that carries a maximum 10-year sentence.
Judge Serge Delisle said Ismael Habib’s version of events lacked credibility.
There is relatively little jurisprudence related to the charge as it was only added to the Criminal Code in 2013.
The Crown had accused Habib of attempting to leave Canada with a plan to join Islamic State in Syria.

Parents and officials keeping watch as 'Tequila Sunrise' bush party season approaches

Retroactive changes to criminal pardons found unconstitutional
An Ottawa man who challenged changes to the law that retroactively doubled the amount of time that offenders would have to wait before they could apply for a criminal pardon has succeeded in having it struck down as unconstitutional.
Michael Charron had already finished serving his sentence and was two years away from applying for a pardon when the previous Conservative government changed the law in 2012 to extend the time period he and others convicted of an indictable offence would have to wai -

'Just because it is legal doesn't mean it is good': Obstetricians worry about marijuana law
The group that represents obstetricians and gynecologists in Canada is watching the pending legalization of marijuana with concern, saying there is growing evidence suggesting its use by pregnant mothers negatively affects brain development in their fetuses.
“Our worry is that because it is made legal, people may think it is not a problem,” said Dr. George Carson, president of the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada.

Canada’s finance ministers met in Ottawa Monday to confront the reality that if we want legal marijuana to displace the illegal kind, they won’t be able to tax the hell out of it, at the same time as Ottawa’s public-health authorities conferred on how to discourage people from getting high at all.

Dawson: Court delay fixes should have us on edge
What, exactly, a justice system is supposed to do is at the root of last week’s monster Senate report detailing solutions for delays plaguing the courts. It’s not explicit, mind you, but implicit, because some of the recommendations sniff about at the roots of justice.
The impetus for the report is the fear that murderers are stalking the streets because their charges have been stayed (meaning they go free) after their trials took longer than is constitutionally allowed. Specifically -
Canada 150 pottery exhibit celebrates Canada's cultures during confederation
A bed of 9,000 flowers and feathers has sprung up on the Museum of Nature’s lawn. But this garden isn’t alive, it’s ceramic. ‘Populace’ is a hand-made monochromatic exhibit comprised of ceramic pieces by the Ottawa Guild of Potters, in honour of Canada’s 150th anniversary. -

Ottawa woman with EB raising money on behalf of Jonathan Pitre
An Ottawa woman with a mild form of the skin disease that plagues Jonathan Pitre will host a fundraising event to honour the ailing Russell teenager and raise money for others with epidermolysis bullosa.
Gemma Riley-Laurin, 40, was born with dominant dystrophic EB, a rare, genetic skin disease that attacks knees, ankles, elbows and knuckles. It’s milder than Pitre’s form of the disease, recessive dystrophic EB, which affects his whole body and produces widespread blistering and -

"I love the pulse that moves," Serena Ryder says
Canadian songstress Serena Ryder just released her sixth album, Utopia, a fresh and funky follow-up to her gold-selling, Juno-winning release, Harmony. Punchy new songs like Got Your Number and Electric Love reflect her rekindled passion for rhythm, she tells Lynn Saxberg, while a quick recording job meant she never lost sight of the groove. Here’s more from the interview with Ryder, who performs at the Ottawa Jazz Festival main stage on Friday and returns July 1 for her third Canada Day g -

Ottawa firefighters rescued a person whose vehicle crashed into the woods early Monday morning. The car veered off the road near the intersection of Stagecoach Road and Old Prescott Road into a heavily treed area near Greely, said firefighters.
The vehicle was upside down, on its roof. The driver was able to crawl from the wreck, but could not navigate through the wooded area back to the main road without the assistance of firefighters.

Two teens dead, two seriously injured in vehicle rollover on Fernbank Road
Police believe that four teens had just left a bush party when the car they were riding in lost control and crashed in Stittsville Sunday evening, killing two young women.
The two other teens are in hospital in critical condition.
Police said the Chevrolet Cobalt the teens were riding in was heading east on Fernbank Road when it appears to have attempted to pass several vehicles, lost control and went into the ditch.
The car landed in a wooded area.
Investigators, who are still mapping the scene -

An American's plea: Please, Canada, you can't desert us now
It likely won’t surprise you that, even after 20 years in America, I begin this letter with an apology. I’m sorry, America, but I’ve become intolerant – long a virtue and a point of pride. And if I’m losing tolerance from this side of the border, I can only imagine how you’re feeling up north. And that is why I’m writing. Canada, we need your help down here. I heard your clever and admirable minister of Foreign Affairs speak last week, but you -

Bureaucrats, Canadian officers headed to Paris for taxpayer-funded vacation?
A contingent of bureaucrats from Public Services and Procurement Canada as well as military officers from the Canadian Forces are going to the Paris Air Show this week. They are there to meet with aerospace firms to find out about the capabilities of their fighter jets in preparation for a competition the Liberals have promised starting in 2019 to replace the CF-18 jets.
Several readers, including some in industry, have questioned why these individuals must travel to Paris at taxpayers’ ex -
